ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (January 28, 2019) — NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative invites survivors, supporters, and the public to its 8th Annual Cocoa & Cookies Open House on February 2, 11AM-2PM at the NormaLeah office, 1612 Second Avenue in Downtown Rock Island (IL).
The Cocoa & Cookies Social is free to attend and is open to both men and women. “We encourage everyone to bring a friend and help us celebrate our grass roots efforts and learn how we are moving forward with our mission to rise up against ovarian cancer,” said Jodie Shagrin Kavensky, the organization’s founder and CEO.
All guests will have a chance to win door prizes and receive discounts on Bling4Cancer awareness and fashion jewelry. Cookies by Olde Towne Bakery will be served. This annual open house is NormaLeah’s way of thanking the Quad City community for their support and to share a preview of the 2019 initiatives with ways volunteers can get involved.
NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative was established in 2008 as a 501(c)(3) organization. Named after two sisters who died of ovarian cancer, our mission is to enrich lives through early detection education, patient support services and research funding for ovarian cancer – the silent killer of women. Our efforts concentrate on educating women and those who love (and care for) them about ovarian cancer and its genetic link to other cancers.
All women are at risk for ovarian cancer and approximately 1 in 75 women will develop the disease during her lifetime. Each year more than 22,000 American women are diagnosed with the disease and about 14,000 women die from it. The organization honors the memory of Mrs. Kavensky's mother, Norma Yecies Shagrin and her aunt, Leah Yecies Hantman, whose lives were cut short by the deadly disease. “Sisters share a lot of things, but ovarian cancer should never be any of them,” Kavensky said.
