ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (June 5, 2019) — The Rock Island Arsenal Chapter of the Association of the United States Army (RIA AUSA) will host a news conference featuring Hershel Woody Williams, Chief Warrant Officer, W-4, the last surviving United States Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipient from WWII. The news conference will take place from 4-4:30PM, Thursday, June 13, in the Palmer College of Chiropractic Welcome Center Conference Room (No 1 on the Palmer Campus map).
CWO Williams will be in the Quad Cities to provide a community presentation on the Rock Island Arsenal and attend the Army Ball on June 14. CWO Williams served in the Battle of Iwo Jima with the 21st Marines, 3rd Marine Division. His actions, commitment to fellow service members, and heroism were recognized on October 5, 1945, when he received the Congressional Medal of Honor from President Truman at the White House. He founded the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation to honor Gold Star Families and is responsible for establishing 47 Gold Star Family Memorial Monuments across the United States with 61 additional monuments currently under construction in 42 states.
