DAVENPORT, IOWA (December 8, 2022) Green, with red bow attached, sixty-gallon rain barrels are available at River Action. Diverters for the downspout come with each. Depending on the size of the downspout needed, barrels are $90 or $95 and come with a spigot to fit a garden hose. Every tenth person to buy will receive a barrel at ½ price.

Every drop of water can be accessed with drainage 2/3 down from the top or just two inches from the bottom. The lid has holes for accepting rainwater; a screen keeps out mosquitos. An overflow spout near the top of the barrel can redirect excess water away from a foundation.

You will halt runoff, cut the water bill, and promote conservation of this precious resource each time you pull out the hose.

River Action’s “Retain the Rain” program is an initiative to conserve water and lower flood levels in local rivers and streams. Perhaps the simplest action that can be taken to reduce run-off is to collect the rain that runs off our residential homes and commercial buildings.

To purchase, visit riveraction.org/retaintherain. Barrels can be picked up at 822 East River Drive, Davenport, IA 52803, or on weekends by appointment. Call 563-322-2969 for more information or to make arrangement for pick-up.
