IOWA CITY, IOWA (April 20, 2026) — What began as a tribute to one young man has grown into a powerful driver of cancer research at UI Health Care.
Courage Ride returns for its 22nd year on Saturday, August 8, continuing its mission to fund sarcoma research at Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and showing how a local event can make a national impact.
The event was founded in memory of Seth Bailey, of Riverside, Iowa, who passed away at age 25 after an eight-year battle with sarcoma. Courage Ride began in 2005 and last year surpassed the $1 million mark in funds raised for sarcoma research.
The philanthropic donations from Courage Ride have been instrumental for research and initiating seed grant funding that has resulted in major NIH and DOD R01-funded projects totaling more than $10 million. The event also helps sustain one of the largest sarcoma tissue banks in the Midwest.

The ride begins and ends at Big Grove Brewery and Taproom in Iowa City and offers five route options for cyclists of all levels. Beyond the ride, the event brings the community together with breakfast and lunch, live music, a silent auction, and activities open to the public.
A virtual ride option for $25 is also available for those who want to support the cause from anywhere.
Sponsorship Opportunities
Courage Ride offers five sponsorship levels, starting at just $100, making it easy for businesses, organizations, and individuals to get involved.
Those interested in sponsorship or donating items to the silent auction can use the website's contact form to send a message to the Courage Ride team of volunteers.
Each year, riders, survivors, families, and researchers come together with a shared goal: to move sarcoma research forward.
“It’s incredible to see how far Courage Ride has come. It speaks to the dedication of this community and the shared belief that we can make a difference in the fight against sarcoma,” says Jackie Bailey, who co-founded Courage Ride with her late husband Tom, in honor of their son, Seth.
Why Sarcoma?
Sarcoma is a rare and aggressive cancer, accounting for less than 1% of adult cancers and about 21% of childhood cancers. With over 150 known subtypes, it remains difficult to treat. Research is essential — but underfunded. Sarcoma receives just 1–2% of all cancer research dollars, despite cancer being one of the nation’s costliest diseases.
