ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (July 31, 2023) — Representative Eric Sorensen (IL-17) is announcing over $3.2 million in federal grant funding for Head Start education programs in Northwestern Illinois.
"Early childhood education sets our kids on a trajectory of success that results in better academic performance," said Rep Sorensen. “I commend the Rock Island-Milan School District for securing this critical funding and for providing vital services to our families and kids in Northwestern Illinois.”
"The Rock Island-Milan School District N° 41 Head Start program is excited to be able to continue to provide Head Start services to the children and families within our community. We have been fortunate to have held this grant since 1965 since the start of Head Start and continue to be fortunate to maintain the grant and serve the community's families with our comprehensive-service program," said Nicole Berry, Director of Early Childhood Programs in the Rock Island-Milan School District.
This grant was awarded by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to the Rock-Island Milan School District N° 41 to administer Head Start programming in the Quad Cities area.
Head Start is a program within HHS that provides comprehensive early childhood-education services to children from low-income families.
Congressman Eric Sorensen is the first openly LGBTQ person elected to represent Illinois at the federal level and is a member of the New Democrat Coalition. He serves on the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Prior to serving in Congress, Rep Sorensen was a local meteorologist in Rockford and the Quad Cities for nearly twenty years. His district includes Illinois’ Quad Cities, Rockford, Peoria, and Bloomington-Normal.
