DAVENPORT, IOWA (February 7, 2024) — Since 2020, River Action has sold 5,600 rain barrels as part of its Retain the Rain Program. River Action will commemorate its fortieth anniversary May 2, 9AM, at the Waterfront Center in Bettendorf with a seminar titled “Unloading and Rolling Out 400 Rain Barrels for a Distribution on Earth Day.”
Rain barrels conserve water and prevent runoff into area streams and the Mississippi River allowing rain to be retained where it falls.
Now, with the opportunity to create a large impact with 400 sixty-gallon barrels, the additional barrels will retain 24,000 gallons in a ½ inch rain. Added to the 5,600 barrels sold to date, 6,000 barrels will capture 360,000 gallons in a ½ inch rain. This rainwater can be used to water gardens, lawns, or wash a car.
Rain Barrels are just one practice in River Action’s Retain the Rain program which includes: Rain gardens, bioswales, green roofs, permeable parking and alleys, and prairie plantings. All practices are pictured and described in easy steps in River Action’s sixteen-page book “6 Simple Things You Can Do to Save the Mississippi River.” It is available at the RA office, 822 East River Drive or online at www.riveraction.org.
