Feeding America® Network Food Banks across the Country Promote Hunger Action Month

Davenport, Iowa – Sept. 5, 2018 – This September the River Bend Foodbank, together with the Feeding America nationwide network of food banks, will mobilize across all 50 states in an effort to bring an end to hunger. Hunger Action Month is designed to inspire people to take action and raise awareness of the fact that 41 million Americans, including nearly 13 million children, are food insecure, according to the USDA.

In eastern Iowa and western Illinois, more than 120,000 people struggle with hunger and may not know where they’ll find their next meal. That number includes one in five kids who may not have enough to eat.

September marks the eleventh year the Feeding America network of food banks has organized this annual call to action. This year the campaign will focus on the strong connections between hunger and health.

The Hunger Action Month 2018 campaign asks people to consider how it must feel to live with an empty stomach, which puts a healthy life and a promising future at risk.

“There is such a strong connection between food and health,” said Michael Miller, President & CEO of River Bend Foodbank. “A child sitting in school who does not know where dinner is coming from has such a harder time paying any attention to what the teacher has to say, succeeding in school, and growing up to be a productive member of society, through no fault of their own. There is enough food to feed every one of them if we would just share it with them instead of throwing it away.”

On Hunger Action Day, September 13th, a number of events will be occurring.

• A Mobile Food Pantry will take place at John Deere Harvester Works, 1100 13th Ave., East Moline, IL beginning at 10:00 am [volunteer shifts are full].

• River Bend Foodbank’s 3rd Annual Wine & Dine for a Cause fundraising event will take place at the JBar/Holiday Inn and Conference Center, 4215 Elmore Ave., Davenport, IA, at 6:00 pm [this event is sold out].

• Volunteers from Wells Fargo will be at the Foodbank, 4010 Kimmel Dr., Davenport, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm to sort food, pack backpacks, and perform a variety of other duties.

There will also be an additional fourteen Mobile Food Pantries held during the month of September throughout River Bend Foodbank’s 23 county service area.
