BETTENDORF, IOWA (June 6, 2022) — Rivermont Collegiate is known for its rigorous curriculum and high academic standards, but it has also produced some star athletes. Several Rivermont students had outstanding athletic achievements in golf, tennis, and rowing this spring.

Senior and soon-to-be Iowa Hawkeye Shannyn Vogler won her second straight state golf championship at the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union Class 4A tournament on May 27. She was tied with a 36-hole total of 143, getting the +1 she needed to win in a sudden-death playoff. Vogler also won the state golf title in 2021 with a five-stroke lead. She will join the Hawkeye program this fall.

Elizabeth Alves and Andrea Porubcin

On May 6 at the MAC girls-tennis tournament, Rivermont junior Andrea Porubcin took her first MAC title in N° 1 singles with a 10-3 win. Porubcin also took the N° 1 doubles title with her Bettendorf teammate Elizabeth Alves. Porubcin and Alves got third in doubles at the Iowa State Class 2A Tennis Tournament on May 28. In 2021 Porubcin and her partner also won the Class 2A regional title, advancing them to the state meet, where they placed seventh.

As well as being gifted athletes, both Porubcin and Vogler made the Rivermont Honor Roll and were inducted into the National Honor Society this spring.

The Rivermont Rowing Academy introduces the sport of rowing and challenges student-athletes to learn and enhance their rowing skills. Rowers train at the Sylvan Boathouse, home to nationally-recognized Y Quad Cities Rowing. The program is excellent for kids who want to learn the fundamentals and get a feel for competitive rowing.

Brothers Eamon Matlock (Nineth) and Graham Matlock (Seventh) learned they had a passion for rowing through the Rivermont Rowing Academy. They now row for Y Quad Cities Rowing, and on May 21 and ‘22, they won bronze at the Midwest Championships in Cincinnati, rowing a double in the U17 division. That qualified them for nationals in Sarasota, Florida, in June. Both Eamon and Graham made the Rivermont Honor Roll, and Eamon was inducted into the National Honor Society this spring. The Rivermont Rowing Academy accepts Rivermont students in grades 7-12. The season begins again in September.

"Our goal for the athletics program at Rivermont is to develop skills in our student athletes' individual and team sport choices while balancing very rigorous academics," said Michelle Bibens, Rivermont Athletic Director. "We're supportive of the Strong Mind/Strong Body mentality, and love when students take the opportunity to cultivate talents in sports, win or lose. But it's always rewarding when we have Rivermont students reach the highest levels in the state!"
