CEDAR FALLS, IOWA (October 18, 2023) — Community leader and small-business owner Sarah Corkery will seek the Democratic nomination for Iowa’s second congressional district in the United States House of Representatives, she announced Wednesday.

“Iowans know that if you’re not doing the work, you lose your job. We like leaders who show up ready to fight for us every day, even when it means working with people from across the aisle — and especially if it means standing up to your own political party,” said Corkery. “[Representative] Ashley Hinson isn’t doing the work. It’s time for the voters of Iowa’s second congressional district to send someone to Washington who will.”

“Both times when I received my cancer diagnoses, I benefited from a wonderful support system of family and friends to help close the gaps left by the days spent in treatment. But many others that are in the same situation aren’t so lucky,” said Corkery. “Under Ashley Hinson’s leadership, a catastrophic health diagnosis still means choosing between paying your mortgage or paying your medical bills. Iowans deserve better than a Representative who puts partisan politics over our healthcare needs — including the right to make personal medical decisions without government intervention.”

Corkery continued, “After voting against the first bipartisan infrastructure law in decades, refusing to cap the cost of insulin at $35 a month for Iowa seniors with diabetes, and her failure to sign onto the Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act, it is clear that Ashley Hinson is unwilling to advocate for Iowa families. I look forward to holding Representative Hinson accountable for her partisan record.”

Corkery has met with dozens of community groups and hundreds of individuals across the Second Congressional District as she considered her run for Congress. Sarah has been integral in cancer research-funding lobbying efforts and has served as a disability-rights advocate who helped research and raise over $1 million alongside another family to build an inclusive park in Cedar Falls. Corkery has spent more than 25 years as a marketing professional, and now operates a small creative branding firm with her husband, Chris.
