WASHINGTON DC (January 29, 2019) — In a letter to US Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley of Iowa, US Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Lighthizer submitted a description of changes to existing laws needed to bring the United States into compliance with the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA).
“This is an important step required under U.S. law to implement the new trade deal with Mexico and Canada,” Grassley said. “Congress has to carefully consider the agreement and work out the details before it can be ratified. Transparency and adequate consultation every step of the way in accordance with Trade Promotion Authority will strengthen this agreement for the benefit of American farmers, businesses, workers and families. I look forward to working with Ambassador Lighthizer and my colleagues on the Senate Finance Committee and throughout Congress during this process.”
The submission to Grassley is required under section 106(a)(1)(C) of the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act of 2015, known as Trade Promotion Authority or TPA.
