WASHINGTON DC (August 26, 2019) — Senator Charles "Chuck" Grassley will participate in a tour and Q&A with US Drug Czar Jim Carroll on Thursday, August 29, at the Cedar Rapids Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC) located at 3601 16th Ave SW. The tour will begin at 2:45PM CT with the Q&A to follow from 3-4PM CT. The discussion will focus on methamphetamine and combatting the addiction crisis in Iowa.

Sen Grassley, a current member and former Co-Chair of the Senate Drug Caucus, has worked over the years to address the widespread addiction crisis. As Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen Grassley also moved a number of bills forward which were included in the sweeping bipartisan opioid package. Most recently, he joined Sen Joni Ernst in sending a letter to the Department of Homeland Security and Office of National Drug Control Policy to address the increased volume of methamphetamine being smuggled from Mexico into the United States.

Carroll is the current Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, serving as chief drug policy adviser to President Donald Trump. In this capacity, he oversees and coordinates the entire government’s drug policy strategy, including the response to the opioid epidemic. One of the bills pushed through and co-sponsored by Grassley in the opioid package was a bill that reauthorized and strengthened ONDCP, so that the agency can work to address emerging and existing drug threats.
