DAVENPORT, IA – APRIL 2018 – Gilda’s Club will host a Skin Cancer Prevention & Awareness Presentation on Tuesday, April 24 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. at Gilda’s Club (1234 E River Dr., Davenport). This presentation includes dinner and is open to the general public. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in Iowa. Anyone can get skin cancer, but most cases can be prevented by practicing sun safety and avoiding tanning beds and devices. Presenter Dr. Jill Lightfoot will discuss:   *   Facts about skin cancer   *   Common indicators of skin cancer   *   Risks for skin cancer   *   How to best protect yourself in the sun   *   Monthly self-skin exams   *   Ingredients to look for in sun screen This program is made possible by the Iowa Cancer Consortium and the Iowa Department of Public Health. The Iowa Cancer Consortium is a partnership of health care providers, public health professionals, caregivers, researchers, cancer survivors, volunteers, and many other Iowans who work together to reduce the burden of cancer in Iowa. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 9,000 people are expected to die from skin melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, in 2018. ACS cautions that no sun screens are 100% effective and advise covering up, using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher, seeking shade and avoiding tanning bed and sunlamps.
