Our after-school programs keep kids safe, inspires them to learn and helps working families in our community. This school year, we will serve more than 250 children at six sites in the Rock Island-Milan School District. Children enrolled in Spring Forward after-school programs have access to academic support from certified teachers, homework help, enrichment from community partners, mentoring, art, STEM and healthy snacks and meals.
Nearly one in five students in our country today are unsupervised after the school day ends. A survey of 30,000 households commissioned by the After-School Alliance found that for every child in an after-school program there are two more waiting to get in. This equates to nearly 19.4 million children that are missing out on after-school opportunities. To address this need, Spring Forward continues to grow programs so more families get the support they need.
Spring Forward Learning Center (SFLC) is entering its second year of offering family literacy for immigrant and refugee families at Church of Peace in Rock Island. Our program runs Monday through Thursday, 9 am – noon, serving 35 adult English learners and provides child care while students’ attend classes. We provide students literacy and life skills instruction to help them improve their lives as individuals, community members, and workers. Our dedicated staff and volunteers understand our community’s increased demand for English language instruction are committed to the program.
