DES MOINES, IOWA (January 11, 2023) — State Auditor Rob Sand applauded the expansion of the nationally-acclaimed University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Bachelor of Arts in Accounting program to include hybrid learning through the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) beginning in August 2023.

“Greater access to education at every level is a good thing,” said Auditor Sand. “This partnership provides accounting students with increased opportunities to learn and earn their degrees, which in time should help ease the nationwide shortage of accountants and auditors.”

Leaders from DMACC and UNI announced the collaboration today at a news conference at the DMACC Urban Campus in Des Moines. The partnership offers accounting students in the Des Moines metropolitan area greater educational flexibility by allowing them to earn their core business and elective credits online while receiving in-person accounting instruction at the DMACC Urban Campus in the evening.

“UNI’s accounting program is regarded as one of the top programs in the country, and I’m excited to continue that reputation in Des Moines and help more individuals advance their accounting careers,” said Joe Ugrin, Department Head of Accounting. “This program will offer a unique blend of high quality, accessibility, and affordability.”

The partnership will also offer individuals with an Associate Degree in accounting the opportunity to expand upon their knowledge and work toward becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Auditor Sand announced in October a new initiative by the Auditor of State Office to hire accountants with Associate Degrees in order to fill positions in a tight labor market. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are now 17% fewer Americans employed in accounting and auditing compared to 2019.
