MOLINE, ILLINOIS (September 15, 2026) — Join the Quad City Engineering and Science Council (QCESC) at Black Hawk College on September 17, 5:30-8PM, for an evening exploring chemistry and biology programs, careers, research, and connections to industries throughout the Quad Cities.
Meet Emmanuel Gutierrez
Emmanuel came to Black Hawk College knowing he was interested in STEM but unsure which direction he wanted to pursue. After taking General Chemistry I, he was inspired to propose an independent research project examining pesticide residue on potatoes using BHC’s gas chromatography-mass spectrometry instrument.
His work led to a poster presentation at the American Chemical Society national meeting in Chicago.
Emmanuel is now completing a second semester of independent research while mentoring other students working on their own projects.
During STEM Night Out, Emmanuel will share his experiences and how Black Hawk College helped him discover a possible future in food science.
The evening will also include:
• An introduction to Black Hawk College’s Chemistry and Biology programs
• A program presentation and/or tour
• Pizza and informal conversation
• A discussion about how chemistry and biology are used by Quad Cities industries
• Opportunities to connect with educators, students, and STEM professionals
