ROCK ISLAND, ILLINOIS (June 13, 2024) — Forty-six students at Augustana College recently were inducted into the college's Phi Beta Kappa chapter. This national academic honor society recognizes scholarly achievement, character, integrity, and independence of mind. Members are elected by faculty. Election is less a reward for past success than a recognition of exceptional promise for future growth and achievement.

Students honored at the induction ceremony include:

Lauren Anderson, a Speech-Language Pathology major of Port Byron, IL

Tyler Estes, a Kinesiology major of Rock Island, IL

Elena Haffner, a History, Women Gender/Sexuality Studies major of Geneseo, IL

Jayla Hathorn, a Business Marketing major of Rock Island, IL

Hannah Hutton, a Speech-Language Pathology major of Moline, IL

Jason Smith, a Environmental Studies, Biology major of Port Byron, IL

Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776 and celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Invitation to membership is a reflection of outstanding achievement. Only about ten percent of the nation's institutions of higher learning have Phi Beta Kappa chapters, and only about ten percent of the arts and sciences graduates of these institutions are selected for Phi Beta Kappa membership.

Augustana College is a vibrant, welcoming liberal-arts college located on a 115-acre campus in the Quad Cities (pop 400,000) along the Mississippi River. Augustana, a residential campus, has 100 majors and programs, 160 student organizations, and 28 varsity athletic teams.

The college enrolls 2,500 students in a metro area that provides access to many career-paths and hands-on learning opportunities, including internships, jobs, student teaching, and research sites.
