Former Harkin staffer will focus on leveling the playing field for American workers and strengthening the middle class
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – In an announcement video released this morning, Thomas Heckroth, a former staffer of U.S. Senator Tom Harkin and the Obama Administration’s Department of Labor, announced he will seek the Democratic nomination in Iowa’s First Congressional District. “I’ve spent my career working to level the playing field for Iowans and American workers. Now, I’m running for Congress because we need an economy that values work more than wealth,” said Thomas Heckroth. “We need to stop leaders from rewriting the rules to favor billionaires and corporations and commit to strengthening working families. As I continue to travel across the First District, I look forward to discussing how we can accomplish that and ensure that Iowans in communities large and small have the job security, access to education, and the level playing field they deserve.” Heckroth is a sixth-generation Iowan and native of Waverly, Iowa. After graduating from Waverly-Shell Rock High School, Heckroth attended the University of Iowa where he walked-on to the Hawkeye baseball team. Following college, Thomas joined the staff of former U.S. Senator Tom Harkin, focusing on agriculture, education, and labor issues. He then joined the Obama Administration’s Department of Labor, where he helped hold corporations and trading partners accountable to protect workers’ rights at home and around the world. Following government service, he earned an MBA, and most recently worked in the private sector as the Director of Sustainable Manufacturing and Sourcing for a children’s clothing maker for Nike and Levi’s. Thomas and his wife, Naomi, live in Cedar Falls with their dog Waverly.
