Meeting With Farmers And Agricultural Workers From Audubon To Allamakee, Fred Will Discuss His Commitment To Standing Up For Iowa’s Farmer And Protecting Our Economic Future

As Trump’s Trade War Targets Iowa’s Leading Exports, Fred Will Make Bilateral Trade Partnerships To Protect Iowa’s Vital Export Markets

Today, April 13, Fred Hubbell, Democratic candidate for governor, will launch his “Standing Up For Iowa’s Farmers Tour,” traveling statewide discussing his vision to protect and strengthen Iowa’s agricultural economy. Throughout the tour, Fred will meet with Iowa farmers, producers, and workers and share his commitment to standing up for Iowa’s agricultural future by forming bilateral trade relationships to secure Iowa’s export markets.

President Trump’s trade war with China and threats to change the renewable fuel standard threatens the future of Iowa’s agricultural exports that total over $11 billion annually. In fact this trade war has already cost Iowa pork producers over $400 million, thrown ethanol and soybean markets into chaos, squeezed Iowa’s small producers, and is a disaster not just for Iowa’s agricultural workers, but for Iowa’s economy as a whole.

As governor, Fred will stand up for Iowa’s farmers and producers by working to protect Iowa’s agricultural economy and form long term bilateral trade relationships with Iowa’s key export markets. Iowans need a leader who will speak truth to Washington, D.C., and work to ensure our state’s farmers and producers have the support they need to power Iowa’s economy forward.

About Fred:

A lifelong progressive and fifth-generation Iowan, Fred Hubbell is a proven leader with the experience to get results and get Iowa moving in the right direction. A leader who knows how to balance a budget, Fred holds vast experience in both the public and private sector, where he successfully ran several large companies like Younkers Department Chain and Equitable of Iowa. Additionally, Fred was twice called to public service, first, by then Governor Culver in 2007 to lead the Iowa Power Fund, helping Iowa invest and become a leader in renewable energy, and secondly, in 2009, to help clean up the Iowa Department of Economic Development following a disastrous film tax scandal. Throughout his career, Fred has also been a tireless progressive advocate. As the former chair of Planned Parenthood of Mid-Iowa, he fought to protect and expand a woman's right to quality health care. Serving on the Iowa College Foundation Board and Simpson College, Fred has worked to expand higher education opportunities to more Iowans. And with his service on the Mercy Hospital Medical Board and work with Broadlawns Medical Center, he has fought to ensure that those Iowans in need get the quality, affordable, and accessible health care they deserve. He currently resides in Des Moines, with his wife Charlotte, and has three children and three grandchildren.
