Locals and businesses contribute school supplies for Quad Cities kids

BETTENDORF, IOWA (July 17, 2019) — On Thursday, July 19, United Way of the Quad Cities will Day of Action to collect school supplies for local children. Nearly 25,000 Quad Cities students are on the Free and Reduced lunch program. By collecting basic school-supply items, United Way of Quad Cities aims to help students feel prepared and ready to learn — thus setting them up for success in the coming school year.

“The items and monetary donations help local students,” said United Way of the Quad Cities President and CEO Rene Gellerman. “At United Way, we work for every child so they can start kindergarten ready to learn, succeed in school, and graduate high school ready for their next step. That’s why initiatives such as Day of Action are so important.”

On July 18 between 10AM and 2PM, items will be collected at JB Young Opportunity Center, 1702 N Main St in Davenport, Iowa and at the 7th Ave entrance at Rock Island Intermediate Academy, 2100 6th Ave, Rock Island, Illinois.

A variety of school supplies will be collected, including crayons, composition notebooks, loose-leaf paper, pens, and more. For those that would like to make a monetary donation, online donations can be made atunitedwayqc.org/pencils. With a $15.50 donation, one backpack with supplies can be given to a student in-need.

Last year, United Way of the Quad Cities collected more than 46,000 items and more than $9,500. The goal of tomorrow’s Day of Action is to help 4,000 students by collecting 50,000 items and raising $10,500.

“No child should be denied the opportunity to succeed because they lack the basic classroom tools,” said Gellerman. “This supply drive plays an important role and will help more kids start the school year prepared to learn and excel.”
