QUAD CITIES, IOWA (July 8, 2019) — United Way of the Quad Cities recently announced the addition of four new board members as the organization wishes farewell to four outgoing members. The 24-person board, which governs United Way, typically transitions each summer as the organization runs on a July-June fiscal year.

“We’re delighted to add these talented and professional individuals to our board of directors,” said United Way of the Quad Cities President and CEO, Rene Gellerman. “Each person brings unique expertise and skill-sets that make them an extraordinary asset. They all have a passion for United Way’s mission and our work to enhance opportunities for all Quad Citizens. I’m honored to work alongside of them as board members.”

New board members include John Anderson, president and CEO at Quad City Bank and Trust; the Rev. Dwight Ford of Grace City Church; Decker Ploehn, City Administrator of Bettendorf; and Kevin Mowbray, president and CEO at Lee Enterprises. Together, the new members will officially begin their term in August.

The major leadership roles of United Way of the Quad Cities board of directors include visioning, direction setting for the organization and ensuring results. The board represents United Way in the region, brings the public voice to the organization’s decision making and is charged with stewardship and accountability to maintain the trust of the community.

“It’s great to welcome these four, but that also means we’re wishing farewell to the others,” said Gellerman. “The outgoing directors were instrumental in establishing our impact agenda, a more strategic approach to improving systemic challenges facing our community. Under their leadership, we’ve become much more strategic, focused and nimble in measuring outcomes and impact in the areas of education, income and health. They are leaving a lasting legacy of courage and commitment at the United Way and for the Quad Cities.”

Outgoing members include Mark Burton, retired strategic sourcing manager at John Deere; Amy Crist, senior vice president at TBK Bank; Larry Barker, retired Scott County Health Department director; and Jim Spelhaug, retired Pleasant Valley Community School District superintendent.

During their tenures, they played a significant role in establishing the Regional Education Outcomes Exchange and helped the United Way transition from a community chest funder to an impact investor business model.

The United Way of the Quad Cities is committed to creating a stronger region where kids succeed in school and life, adults achieve quality jobs and financial stability and families are happy and healthy – the building blocks of a quality life.
