Representative Forbes: ‘Fred Will Work To Ensure Every Iowan Has Access to The Quality, Affordable Health Care They Deserve’

Today, January 25, Urbandale State Representative John Forbes and five former legislators announced their endorsements of Fred’s Democratic campaign for Governor. The latest endorsers join a growing list of over 60 current and former elected leaders who have announced their support for Fred’s campaign.

Forbes has represented Urbandale in the Iowa General Assembly since 2013. He currently serves as Ranking Member on the Transportation Committee, and on the Commerce, Human Resources, Ways and Means Committees, and the Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittee. A pharmacist by trade, Forbes has been a leader in working to expand access to health care, introducing, alongside fellow Hubbell endorser Senator Matt McCoy, the  Healthy Iowans for a Public Option (HIPO) legislation that would expand affordable health care to roughly 20,000 Iowans who are currently priced out of affordable coverage, while also saving Iowa hundreds of millions of dollars.

In addition to Representative Forbes’ endorsement, Fred also earned the support of two former state senators and three former state representatives: Jackson County Senator Roger Stewart, Cedar Rapids Senator Bob Rush, Black Hawk County Representative Bill Witt, Oelwein Representative Steve Falck, and Linn and Johnson County Representative and former head of the Iowa Department on Aging Ro Foege.

“Under the Branstad-Reynolds Administration, Iowans have borne the brunt of wave after wave of severe reductions in access to quality health care. I am supporting Fred for governor, because Iowa deserves a leader who will put the health of Iowans first, “ said Urbandale Representative John Forbes. “From shuttered health and mental health institutions, to skyrocketing premiums, to reduced and revoked vital services, Governor Reynolds’ reckless policies have put thousands of lives at stake, and has drawn criticism from even her own party. Iowa needs a unifier who will expand access to quality health care, rather than stripping it away from our most vulnerable, and that’s why I’m proud to endorse Fred’s campaign. As governor, Fred will reverse disastrous Medicaid privatization, address Iowa’s mental health crisis, and work to ensure every Iowan has access to the quality, affordable health care they deserve.”

“I am proud to have earned the endorsement of State Representative John Forbes, who continues to lead the House effort to expand access to quality health care and put an end to Governor Reynolds’ failed Medicaid privatization experiment,” said Fred Hubbell. “Under Reynolds’ watch, Iowans who need health care the most - the disabled, mentally ill, elderly, and children -  have suffered the most with cuts or limited services for needed care. As governor, I look forward to working with Representative Forbes and the health care community to expand access to quality, affordable health care, and put an end to this inhumane and needless suffering.”
