“Volcanoes: The Fires of Creation 3D” will erupt in the Putnam Museum and Science Center’s GIANT Screen Theater Saturday. An exclusive members-only preview party that includes volcano-themed family fun will take place on Friday.
The film follows intrepid explorer Carsten Peter as he dodges boulders at the edge of an active volcano in Indonesia, descends to a boiling lava lake in Vanuatu and visits incredible acid ponds, geysers and mineral deposit fields in Ethiopia. Viewers can explore across the globe to see the archeological ghost town of Pompeii, hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the ocean and witness the devastating effects of the 2018 Kilauea eruption in Hawaii.
“We often think of volcanoes as being destructive, but they also build and play a beneficial role on the planet,” said Michael Dalton-Smith, Volcanoes’ director and producer. “There are dozens of volcanoes erupting each day from the bottom of the ocean to mountain peaks. To witness one in action is both beautiful and awe-inspiring. Most importantly, I hope that the audience will come away with a better understanding of the forces that shaped the world we know today.”
Families will be captivated as they discover molten worlds and exploding craters in this adrenaline-filled, immersive experience that only GIANT Screen films can provide.
“Our aim at the Putnam is to inspire our guests and connect them to the world around them,” said Kim Findlay, Putnam President and CEO. “Volcanoes does exactly that by allowing viewers to experience volcanoes up close with unique, never-before-seen footage from volcanoes across the globe.”
The members-only preview party on Friday will include explosive volcanic experiments and chats with Putnam curator Chris Chandler about the vital role volcanoes play in cooling the Earth.
Memberships are available for those whose excitement is bubbling over and want to go to the member preview party before the film opens to the public. A family membership to the Putnam is only $6.67 per month, and it includes unlimited access to general admission exhibits and discounts on tickets to the GIANT Screen Theater.
