DES MOINES, IOWA (May 9, 2019) — Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller has filed five lawsuits in Dickinson, Woodbury, Story, Muscatine, and Benton counties alleging contractors conducted illegal excavations that damaged underground utility lines in violation of the “Iowa One Call” law.

Four of the five cases were resolved with consent decrees, with civil penalties totaling $12,500. The four defendants admitted to the violations and agreed not to violate the One Call law.

WASHINGTON DC (May 9, 2019) — The Senate Judiciary Committee today approved bipartisan legislation introduced by Senator Charles "Chuck" Grassley to fix deficiencies in a federal benefit-program that are preventing first responders with certain injuries from receiving benefits intended by Congress. The Protecting America’s First Responders Act was reported today by voice-vote without opposition.

DES MOINES, IOWA (May 9, 2019) — Today, Governor Kim Reynolds announced the first awards for the Future Ready Iowa Summer Youth Intern Pilot Program for low-income students at risk of not graduating from high school. Nonprofit organizations and education institutions are among applicants awarded a total of $248,367 to host summer programs that prepare students for post-secondary education and training, including teaching-employability skills. More than 100 students will be served.
