Calhoun, Jackson, Jersey, Madison, Monroe, Randolph and St. Clair counties include in proclamation

SPRINGFIELD - Governor Rauner today issued a state disaster proclamation for seven counties to ensure continued state support to help affected communities respond and recover from flooding caused by the recent heavy rains.  Counties included in the proclamation include Calhoun, Jackson, Jersey, Madison, Monroe, Randolph and St. Clair.

"These counties have significant issues related to flooding that is already occurring or could occur over the next several days," Gov. Rauner said. "We are committed to help local responders in these and other impacted counties ensure the safety of people affected by this unusual December flooding."

According to the National Weather Service, rainfall between December 23-28 averaged approximately seven inches in the declared counties.

The State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) in Springfield was activated Monday to ensure state personnel and equipment could be deployed quickly to support local emergency responders. Resources provided to date include nearly 400,000 sandbags, 160 rolls of plastic, 1,200 tons of sand, and numerous pumps and generators to support flood-fighting efforts in several counties.

The Skin Cancer Foundation Recommends Sun Safety as a Healthy New Year's Resolution

New York, NY (December 29, 2015) ---- The beginning of a new year means starting fresh, particularly when it comes to health habits. In 2016, The Skin Cancer Foundation urges everyone to make skin health a top priority. Here are four healthy skin guidelines to follow in the new year:
1. Don't Skimp on Sun Protection
Proper sun protection is essential year-round since the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays are present every day. Skin cancer is mainly a behavioral disease and it is strongly linked to sun exposure ----  about 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 86 percent of melanomas are caused by the sun's UV rays. For that reason, it's critical to follow a complete sun protection regimen to help prevent skin cancer. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends incorporating the following sun protection tips into your daily routine:
  • Seek the shade, especially during the sun's peak hours, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Do not burn.
  • Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Apply 1 ounce (about the size of a golf ball) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or excessive sweating.
2. Visit the Dermatologist Annually for a Professional Skin Exam
While skin cancer is the most common cancer in the world, it's also one of the most treatable cancers when detected early. A yearly full-body skin exam performed by a dermatologist is critical, and can be lifesaving. In fact, the five-year survival rate for patients whose melanomas are detected early is 98 percent, and this survival rate falls to 16 percent once the disease spreads to distant organs.
3. Perform Routine Self-Exams
In addition to having a professional skin check annually, it's important to examine your skin on a monthly basis to monitor for any new, changing or suspicious lesions. If you notice something new or changing, see a physician immediately. Performed regularly, self-exams should take no more than 10 to 15 minutes. Afraid you'll forget? Make self-exams a habit by scheduling a recurring reminder in your cell phone.
4. Ditch Tanning
There is no such thing as a safe or healthy tan. Whether obtained on the beach, in a tanning bed, or through incidental sun exposure, a tan represents skin damage. Tans are the skin's attempt to repair itself from UV damage from the sun or tanning lamps, and if you have a tan, you have sustained skin cell damage. These imperfect repairs cause gene defects that can lead to skin cancer as well as skin aging, including wrinkles, leathery skin and age spots.
Those tempted to use a tanning bed this winter should think twice ----  people who first use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk for melanoma by an alarming 75 percent. Just one visit is all it takes to increase your skin cancer risk ----  a single session increases the risk for the two most common forms of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, by 29 percent and 67 percent, respectively.

The City of Davenport Parks and Recreation Department is working to improve on the services we offer at our golf courses.  As part of this process we are reaching out to gain feedback on how we are doing and what we should look to focus on in the future through our Golf Survey.
Please feel free to fill out the survey at your earliest convenience.  The questionnaire should take less than 5 minutes of your time to complete.  The goal is to have all surveys completed by January 14th.  Once we have the surveys completed our plan will be to compile the data, evaluate the information we receive and apply it toward our golf improvement plan. Your input is vital to this process and we appreciate the time you have taken to fill out our Golf Survey.
A gift from Davenport Parks will be awarded after completion of the survey.

Opportunity for temporary visit provides a convenient option for prospective residents

DAVENPORT, IA (December 29, 2015) - For a limited time, Senior Star at Elmore Place is offering an exclusive three-month opportunity to reside at its senior living community with no long-term commitment.

Once the excitement of the holidays has ended, winter can take a toll on anyone with its chilly gray weather conditions, the decrease in outdoor activity and overall dreary days.  The winter stay opportunity at Senior Star at Elmore Place offers the chance to fully enjoy the community's lifestyle and services, while also avoiding some of the challenges seniors face during the harsh winter months.  Guests can enjoy all the same amenities residents experience including scheduled transportation, delicious and nutritious meals, and access to social, health and wellness activities without having to battle the elements of winter.  Add to that, freedom from home maintenance and snow removal and it's like an extended vacation.

According to Marc Strohschein, executive director at Senior Star at Elmore Place, older adults at the senior living community focus on the beauty of the season, embracing winter as a time when they can enjoy many warm offerings. DAVENPORT, Iowa - Dec. 29, 2015 - Olivia, Ava and Isaac top the list of the most popular names of babies born at Genesis BirthCenters in 2015.

Parents naming girl babies born at Genesis were in sync with national trends. There were 14 baby girls who went home from Genesis BirthCenters with the name Ava, which was No. 4 in popularity nationally, and the same number going home with the name Olivia, which was No. 3 nationally.

A total of 17 baby boys born at Genesis were named Isaac.  Isaac was well back at No. 31 on the national list of popular boys names. Oliver and Liam were the next most popular names for Genesis boy babies with 11 each.

Liam continued to be among the most popular names for boys born at Genesis and was No. 3 nationally.

Olivia has become a traditional naming favorite at Genesis. In the past four years Olivia was No. 1 three times (2015, 2014, 2012) at Genesis and No. 2 in 2013.

Ava didn't make the Genesis top 10 last year but tied for third in 2013 and tied for fourth in 2012.

Isaac last appeared in the Genesis top 10 - tied for second - in 2013.  Isaac  was not in the Genesis top 10 list for boy names in 2014.

Sophia remains No. 1 nationally for baby girl names. This year there were 10 Sophias born at Genesis for No. 6 on the Genesis list.

The top five girl names nationally in 2015, according to babycenter.com were Sophia, Emma, Olivia, Ava and Mia. The top five boy names for the third straight year were Jackson, Aiden, Liam, Lucas and Noah.

There was one interesting regional cultural influence on parents naming new baby boys this year. There were six boys named Kinnick  born at the Genesis BirthCenter in Davenport.  No boys named Kinnick were born at Genesis Medical Center, Silvis.

Nile Kinnick was the University of Iowa's only Heisman Trophy winner (1939) and the university's football stadium is named for Kinnick. The success of the Hawkeyes on the field this season may have inspired some parents. The 12-1 Hawkeyes will play in the Rose Bowl on Friday.

A few babies born at Genesis in 2015 will have names they are unlikely to share with anyone in their schools.  Among the less common names given to babies born at Genesis in 2015 were Aarpjo (girl); Acyionnah (girl); Olajunece (girl); Zymire (boy); Zaroyee (boy) and Aarav (boy).

Genesis BirthCenters have tracked popular birth names since 2006.
