PORT BYRON, Ill. - State Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale, is asking residents to donate used cellular phones at his district office in Port Byron, located at 201 N. Main St., Unit 2 in Port Byron, to help military members serving abroad call home this holiday season through his partnership with Cell Phones for Soldiers.
"The sacrifices our military families make often includes being separated during this holiday season, and too often it's difficult and expensive to even spend a few minutes on the phone," Smiddy said. "Your donation will connect the families separated by their service to our country."
Cell Phones for Soldiers accepts used cell phones and tablets and donates them to Mindful eCycling for recycling. The proceeds are used to purchase international calling cards given to military members serving abroad. The organization was founded in 2004 by teenagers Robbie, 12, and Brittany, 13, Bergquist and has since donated more than 210 million minutes of free talk time to servicemen and women stationed around the world.
Smiddy has offered his district office as a drop off location for cell phones and tablets and urges residents to drop off their old phones this holiday season.
"I'm honored to partner with Cell Phones for Soldiers and help the people in our community take part in their effort to connect service families around the world," Smiddy said. "That old cell phone you have stuffed in a drawer can still help bring people together, and I hope you'll bring it by the office or one of our area partners to help military members connect with their families this holiday season."
For more information, please contact Smiddy's constituent service office at (309)-848-9098.

Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa is investigating the compressed natural gas station in Afghanistan that cost the U.S. taxpayers $43 million, as much as $42.5 million more than it should have, and the Pentagon task force that oversaw the construction.  The task force spent $800 million in total on the gas station and other similar projects.  The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction reported on the gas station cost over-run and cited a lack of cooperation from the Pentagon with its auditors.  Grassley is seeking full cooperation from the Pentagon with SIGAR.  SIGAR confirmed to Grassley that it has "several ongoing criminal investigations" related to the task force, called the Task Force for Business and Stability Operations (TFBSO).  SIGAR cannot discuss the specifics of those investigations.  Grassley made the following comment on this development.

"Everybody responsible for the tremendous waste of U.S. tax dollars on the gas station and any other projects ought to be held accountable.  That includes any warranted criminal cases.  I expect the Pentagon to cooperate fully with the inspector general and with my office in all inquiries involving the task force.  With the poor track record reported on the auditing side, there's reason to be skeptical on the level  of cooperation with the inspector general on the criminal side."

Catch the spirit of the season in a delightful potpourri of classic favorites including Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, Mozart's Piano Concerto #21 with St. Ambrose professor Marian Lee, and a set of Sleigh Rides.  Also featuring music of Humperdinck, Prokofiev, Delius, and Anderson.

KWQC-TV6 is pleased to once again partner with the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve in collecting toys for less fortunate children in the community who may otherwise go without gifts this Christmas.

The U.S Marine Corp Reserves is asking for new, unwrapped toys preferably around the $10 or above price range. There is a particular need for gifts appropriate for boys and girls ages 6 months - 2 years and 10-12 years. Monetary donations are accepted and will be sent to the Toys For Tots foundation in Quantico, Virginia for accounting purposes where they will then be deposited to a local account designated for use in the Q.C.A.

The following items cannot be accepted by the program and will not be distributed: stuffed animals, realistic looking guns or weapons, food, or clothing.

Traffic flow through the TV6 driveway will be reversed this year due to Brady St. still being two-lane traffic at the time of the event. Drivers will need to enter from Perry St. and exit turning north on to Brady St.

Every Child Matters in Iowa and MomsRising encourage Iowans to engage in local conversations about important issues facing children and families

Des Moines, Iowa - Every Child Matters (ECM) in Iowa and MomsRising today announced a partnership to engage Iowans in addressing the critical issues affecting children and families.

The two organizations are encouraging Iowans to come together at House Parties and discuss a range of policies that would help our families and our economy thrive, including: access to high-quality, affordable childcare; paid family medical leave and earned sick leave; health insurance; and early education for all Iowans.

"We've noticed that the political momentum is shifting, centering around the needs of children, mothers and families," said Brian Ahlberg, President of Every Child Matters. MomsRising and ECM are providing resources to voters through our House Party Toolkit. The Toolkit will encourage candid conversations about the issues and help participants create a plan of action."

In Iowa, the reality for children and families is startling:

? More than 75 percent of Iowa children live in a home where all available parents work outside the home.

? In just under one-half of families, mothers are the sole or primary breadwinners.

? About 71 percent of Iowa families with children under the age of 18 count a mother's earnings as a significant portion of the family income.

? Providing high-quality childcare for an infant in center-based environment costs more than tuition at a public university.

"It's painfully obvious that today's workplace policies fail to meet the needs of working families and businesses in our nation. It's time for our nation's leaders to get moving on win-win policies that studies show boost our families, our businesses, and our economy." said MomsRising Executive Director Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner. "We want to take advantage of Iowa's first in the nation status to highlight and frame these issues for voters and really encourage everyone to take action and advocate."

People interested in hosting a house party can download the Every Child Matters and MomsRising Toolkit through either organization's web site. Information includes:

? Time line to prepare for the party

? Time line to manage the party;

? Resources to understand the issues impacting children, mothers and families;

? Sample invitation language;

? "How To" for social media presence; and

? Candidate contact information.

Happy Joe's is preparing to open its newest PIZZAGRILLE located at The Mills at Riverbend Commons, 2900 River Drive in Moline, Illinois.  Happy Joe's is celebrating their 43rd anniversary this year and in order to stay current, this new location will showcase the newest evolution of branding for the company.

The Happy Joe's PIZZAGRILLE will be located next to the Western Illinois University Campus, in the commercial level of the new housing development, The Mills at Riverbend Commons, spearheaded by Three Corners Development, Inc.

The evolution of Happy Joe's new branding strategy began in Maquoketa, Iowa, in 2009 when the décor was updated and a quaint little bar and expanded menu were added to appeal to the locals. In 2013 the company took over the Eldridge Happy Joe's location, along with Lancers Grill which is located in the same building. The Happy Joe's side received a few upgrades and our energy was focused on using knowledge obtained from the Maquoketa project to update the Lancer's Grill area. We rolled out a new grill décor and grill menu. The name also changed to 350 Grille, reflecting the address. This experience led to the idea of combining both Happy Joe's and the grill idea into one concept called Happy Joe's PIZZAGRILLE! In 2014 the West Locust Street was the first restaurant to have full implementation.  The doors were closed at 1414 West Locust, and reopened at 1616 West Locust in the former Chef's Hat building. This location now supports new décor, a full-grille menu, and Tap Room offering over a dozen craft beer selections on tap, an all you can eat lunch smorgasbord, carry-out window, Sunday brunch, and seating for up to 150. The Milan, Illinois franchise location was renovated into a PIZZAGRILLE in February 2015, and just this past August, the Galesburg, Illinois, location was closed and moved down the street into a beautiful new building.

Larry Whitty, President stated, "We are excited to see the Happy Joe's brand continue to evolve from its humble beginnings in the Village of East Davenport in 1972, started by our father and founder Joe Whitty.  Our brand continues its endless evolution of adjusting to stay relevant to the quickly changing social and consumer demands. The ne w standard that will not change is our pizza which will stay a Midwestern favorite. That old saying, 'our gum doesn't change, however, the wrapper does,' definitely applies here. The modifications to the latest prototype located at The Mills at Riverbend Commons are dramatic enhancements targeted to a younger demographic of the dynamic residential community that will house this restaurant.  The developers of this property, Three Corners Development, are great people known for creating great results and we are proud to be affiliated with them!"

This is not your mom and dad's Happy Joe's. This "new generation" PIZZAGRILLE with a unique and urban-style décor is fun, young, and trendy with an industrial and outdoor active lifestyle feel. There is a covered outdoor seating area, as well as a party room that can seat 30-40.  This newest location neighboring the Western Illinois University campus is the next step in the Happy Joe's PIZZAGRILLE evolution. This location will feature a coffee area with barista selections and delicious breakfast items, as well as lunch, dinner, snacks, and Joegurt (Happy Joe's twist on the frozen yogurt craze). The breakfast menu has been expanded to include grab-and-go selections, with premium coffee and espressos. This location will still offer the large breakfast pizza perfect for big groups or breakfast events, and the individual pan breakfast scramblers. The new lunch and dinner menu will consist of an array of pub-style cuisine, including new appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and entrees, as well as your Happy Joe's favorites. Full table service and catering will be available, as well as delivery service to the Western Illinois campus and to the residents in the building where the PIZZAGRILLE resides. There is a private room perfect for meetings, birthday parties, corporate events, and large groups of any kind. Guests can also enjoy the covered outdoor seating and dining area with a beautiful river view.

Three Corners Development and The Mills at Riverbend Commons are excited and proud to be part of the Happy Joe's PIZZAGRILLE evolution!

There is still a small amount of retail space available. If you're interested in joining the excitement at The Mills at Riverbend Commons, please contact Jeff Miller, 563-650-7400 or jsmiller@ngkf.com.
