SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) is offering tips to help shoppers remain safe and keep their purchases secure during the holidays.

"The holidays are a time for giving, but that doesn't mean you should give criminals a gift by letting them take advantage of you," said Illinois FOP President Chris Southwood. "By following a few common-sense tips, shoppers can stay safe and make sure their purchases reach the intended recipients."

The FOP offers the following holiday shopping safety tips, courtesy of the National Crime Prevention Council., www.ncpc.org.

Shopping in Stores

  • Do not buy more than you can carry. Plan ahead by taking a friend with you or ask a store employee to help you carry your packages to the car.

  • Save all receipts. Print and save all confirmations from your online purchases. Start a file folder to keep all receipts together and to help you verify credit card or bank statements as they come in.

  • Consider alternate options to pay for your merchandise, such as onetime or multi-use disposable credit cards or money orders, at online stores and auction sites.

  • Wait until asked before taking out your credit card or checkbook. An enterprising thief would love to shoulder surf to get your account information.

  • Tell a security guard or store employee if you see an unattended bag or package. The same applies if you are using mass transit.

Walking to and From Your Car

  • Deter pickpockets. Carry your purse close to your body or your wallet inside a coat or front trouser pocket.

  • Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. Check the back seat and around the car before getting in.

  • Do not leave packages visible in your car windows. Lock them in the trunk or, if possible, take them directly home.

    Shopping with Small Children

  • If you are shopping with children, make a plan in case you are separated from each other.

  • Select a central meeting place.

  • Teach children to know they can ask mall personnel or store security employees if they need help.

    Shopping Online

  • Before surfing the Internet, secure your personal computers by updating your security software. Everyone's computer should have anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-spam software, as well as a good firewall installed. Visit www.bytecrime.org for free software downloads.

  • Keep your personal information private and your password secure. Do not respond to requests to "verify" your password or credit card information unless you initiated the contact. Legitimate businesses will not contact you in this manner.

  • Beware of "bargains" from companies with whom you are unfamiliar?if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

  • Use secure websites for purchases. Look for the icon of a locked padlock at the bottom of the screen or "https" in the URL address.

  • Shop with companies you know and trust. Check for background information if you plan to buy from a new or unfamiliar company.

The Fraternal Order of Police, founded in 1915, is the largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers in the United States. With a proud tradition of officers representing officers, the FOP is the most respected and most recognized police organization in the country. The Illinois FOP, chartered in 1963, is the second largest State Lodge, proudly representing more than 32,000 active duty and retired police officers - more than 10 percent of all FOP members nationwide. Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Caucus on International Narcotics Control, today made the following comment on the 2015 National Drug Control Strategy released today by the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

"The Administration has had some successes in reducing youth alcohol and tobacco use.  But fighting illicit drug use is another story.  The Administration's own policies toward marijuana enforcement are likely interfering with its ability to reach key goals on marijuana abuse and maybe drugged driving incidents. If the Administration truly wants to reach its drug control goals, it needs to reconsider its policies that undermine those goals."

On this Friday November 13th Churches United of the Quad City Area asks for a time of silence and prayers. Over the past week there have been yet more killings on college campuses, individual shootings and now this senseless terrorism in Paris. While there are groups locally deciding what impact we can make regarding a non-violent world, their action plans will not be implemented for some time to come.   That is why we are asking for one hour of your time. Tomorrow morning at 9:00, we ask that you turn the TV off, put down the iPad and not worry about who will win the college school football game.  For one hour, stop what you are doing, be silent, and pray for all those that have been affected by these horrible violent acts.

"While these acts may or may not effect us directly here at home, it is important that we show our support and pray for those who are suffering right now," said Anne Wachal, Executive Director of Churches United.

We also ask for prayers for our younger generations, as they will inherit this increasingly violent world.  Our hearts and minds are sad tonight as we continue to pray during this time.

For more information about anything with Churches United, please contact Meredith Dennis, mdennis@cuqca.org or 563-676-9472.

During the last six months, the Community Caring Conference has been enlisting new Board members to rebuild the organization which had worked so successfully in the city to build block clubs. The Board recently approved an updating of their By Laws and setting goals for future activities.

"A renewed CCC intends to expand and re-energize its neighborhood block clubs so that residents all over the city of Rock Island know their neighbors and are watching out for the community," said Paul Fessler, new Chairman of the CCC Board of Directors. Mr. Fessler reported, "the new Board has set three specific goals. First, form or reform block clubs; two, hire a staff organizer to build these watch groups; three, seek wider community support, such as volunteers, funding and linkages to other organizations who want to improve life and lives in Rock Island.  We have a big job ahead of us but we are committed to the CCC vision."

Formed in 1976 in the older neighborhoods of the city, CCC was active until the departure of their previous Executive Director in 2014. CCC block clubs are the foundation for getting neighbors to know their neighbors and developing solutions to common issues.  The current Board will be working to re-energize existing block clubs as well as building the network of governance to create a grassroots organization.   The Board will be working with ten sponsoring churches to build stronger support for the mission of the CCC.  Additional churches will be invited to participate in this neighborhood emphasis.

The National Night Out Picnic on August 4th, was a kick off event to make the community aware that the CCC was back in business.  Over 90 citizens turned out to meet their neighbors and hear about current policing practices.  There was also entertainment, games and prizes.

The current Board of Directors include, Lt. Rusty Hocker, Vice-Chair, Ethel Bassett, Secretary, and Jeff Barnes, Treasurer.  Additional members are Mattie Seward, Aaron Weytenick, Rev. Ken Kuenning, Vikki Blair, Rick Miers, Phil Dennis, and Brian Wischnak   Pat Ward, former Director of the CCC, is helping advise the new Board. Five Board positions remain to be filled at this time.

Davenport, Iowa - Nov. 17, 2015 - The long-planned Bix Beiderbecke Museum will make its home at the River Music Experience (RME) in the Redstone Building in downtown Davenport, Iowa, the two organizations announced today.

The RME and the Bix Beiderbecke Museum & World Archives, LTD have signed an option for nearly 1,500 square feet of exhibit and archival space in the lower level of the building. For over half a century, dedicated fans have dreamed of a permanent museum and archive to preserve the memory of Bix and his music. When the exhibit opens, visitors will be able to see original instruments played by Bix and his fellow musicians, listen to recorded interviews with people who knew Bix, and hear some of the music he made famous.

The Bechtel Charitable Trusts in Davenport have generously committed the lead gift of $100,000, out of a projected $625,000 needed for exhibit design and construction. In making the commitment, Trustee R. Richard Bittner said, "Bechtel Trusts are pleased to participate in honoring Bix Beiderbecke, a composer, a cornetist and a pianist, and one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time."

Board members have pledged $68,000, along with other initial donors who have committed an additional $100,000. The Museum is also seeking funds to establish an endowment of at least $250,000. Donors will have the opportunity to have their names featured in the exhibit hall, which should begin construction late in 2016.

A core group of leading Bix historians and experts will meet in Davenport the weekend of November 20-21, 2015, to refine plans for the exhibit hall and examine the important artifacts that have been purchased or donated.

Among these are family photographs and objects from the Beiderbecke family purchased from Elizabeth Beiderbecke-Hart, and a vast collection of correspondence and recorded interviews with Bix's friends and fellow musicians, purchased from musician and jazz historian Scott Black. This collection, the life's work of Phil and Linda Evans, is comprised of about 40 boxes of rare historical material that will eventually be available to researchers. Evans' books "Bix: the Leon Bix Beiderbecke Story" and "Bix, Man and Legend" (with Richard Sudhalter) are based on material from this collection.

General chairs for the Bix Museum campaign are Howard Braren, Rock Island, Ill., family member and retired fundraising consultant; and Randy Sandke, Shohola, Penn., jazz musician and Bix authority. Honorary chairs are George Avakian, record producer and jazz historian; Hoagy Bix Carmichael; Dick Hyman, pianist and composer; Dan Morgenstern, Director Emeritus of the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies; Vince Giordano, Grammy-winning bandleader and jazz historian; and David Sager, archivist, Library of Congress National Jukebox.

The River Music Experience (129 N. Main St. in Davenport, Iowa) exists to give Quad-Cities residents and visitors opportunities to experience America's music, and most especially the music of the Mississippi River, through live music performances and programs which nurture, educate and inspire musicians, and music appreciators. www.rivermusicexperience.org
