Free, at-home program promotes health, exercise and nutrition for children and families

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (June 2, 2015) ? Even though school is out and kids no longer have their routine physical education classes, parents can keep them active this summer with the newly launched Hy-Vee KidsFit website. Hy-Vee, Inc. designed this free, online program to help kids and families make health, exercise and nutrition priorities in their everyday lives.

Hy-Vee KidsFit is an interactive health and wellness website for children, teens and families that offers a free, online personal trainer. The workouts and activities featured on KidsFit require no equipment or gym memberships, making it accessible to children and teens of all skill levels. The website ? www.hy-veekidsfit.com ? also features fun workout videos, nutrition blogs written by Hy-Vee dietitians and health lessons.

"At Hy-Vee, we want to make it easier for kids and families to make healthier choices. With its easy, fun format, Hy-Vee KidsFit inspires families to establish good fitness and nutritional habits in their daily lives," said Andy McCann, executive vice president and chief health officer at Hy-Vee.

"We know that not every child has the access or interest to play organized sports. We hope a broad range of kids can use the free KidsFit tools to stay active and healthy. Even children who participate in sports can benefit from having equipment-free workouts and tutorials on their computers or phones," McCann added.

The program was developed by certified personal trainer Daira Driftmier, who also serves as the online fitness coach on KidsFit.

"I am excited to help children and families learn more about health, exercise and nutrition," Driftmier said. "My goal is to inspire the next generation to commit to making healthy choices. I want kids to see that fitness is fun and show them how to make it part of their daily routine so they can be healthy for life."

As part of KidsFit, children ages 7-17 and their families can sign up for the 5-Week Challenge, which provides kids with a structure to take control of their personal health and fitness. Participants will earn virtual trophies and badges to help monitor their progress during the 5-Week Challenge, and they will be encouraged to stick to their goals through Driftmier's videos.

Hy-Vee KidsFit was recently introduced at the Exercising Your Character event in Des Moines, Iowa, which teaches fourth- and fifth-grade students about physical fitness, goal setting and character development. To celebrate the announcement, more than 7,300 children from 82 Iowa schools attempted to break the Guinness World Record for most individuals performing jumping jacks simultaneously.

Regional Conservation Partnership Program to make $235 Million Available to Partners

WASHINGTON, June 2, 2015 - An upcoming webinar on the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) will help potential applicants as they seek available funding. During the current round, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will invest up to $235 million to improve the nation's water quality, combat drought, enhance soil health, support wildlife habitat and protect agricultural production. Partners will match the Federal investment.

"This webinar is a great opportunity to directly engage with our partners," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. "Our goal is to leverage available Federal funding and produce more high-performing on-the-ground conservation solutions."

USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will host the webinar, open to both conservation partners and the general public, on Thursday, June 4, 2015 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. EST. To join the webinar, visit https://usdanrcs.adobeconnect.com/r75qxphcya9/This is an external link or third-party site outside of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) website.. Login to Adobe Connect using the Guest option and enter your name.

NRCS recently simplified the application process by creating new online tools: a pre-proposal fillable form, RCPP pre-application data entry tool and pre-proposal data entry tool instructions. These tools support partners as they fill out and submit their pre-proposal application.

RCPP empowers local leaders to work with multiple partners ? such as private companies, local and tribal governments, universities, non-profit groups and other non-government partners ? along with farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners to design solutions that work best for their region. Local partners and the federal government both invest funding and manpower to projects to maximize their impact.

USDA is now accepting pre-proposals for RCPP. Pre-proposals are due July 8, 2015. For more information on applying, visit the RCPP website.

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (June 2, 2015) - The Riceville High School team of Kaleb Tweite and Kyler Bauer brought 8 pounds, 6 ounces to the scale Sunday to win the 2015 Iowa State High School Fishing Championship on the Mississippi River. The win earned the team the title of state champions and qualified the team to compete in the High School Fishing Central Conference championship on Lake Carlyle in September.
It wasn't the largest field in the 2015 TBF/FLW High School State Championship Series, but there was no lack of effort between the two teams that competed for the title. In the end, the Riceville Wildcat duo narrowly edged out runner-ups Sheldon Spears and Noah Clark of Prairie City-Monroe High School who finished in second with 7 pounds, 14 ounces.
Complete results can be found at HighSchoolFishing.org.
The 2015 Iowa State High School Fishing Championship was a two-person (team) event open to students in grades 7-12. The top 10 percent from each TBF/FLW state championship field will advance to a High School Fishing conference championship along with the top three teams from each of the seven TBF/FLW High School Fishing Opens held this season. The top 10 percent of each conference championship field will then advance to the High School Fishing National Championship, coinciding with the TBF National Championship and an FLW Tour stop in the spring of 2016. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.
In addition to the High School Fishing National Championship, all High School Fishing anglers nationwide automatically qualify for the world's largest high school bass tournament, the 2015 High School Fishing World Finals, held on Pickwick Lake in Florence, Alabama, on July 8-11. At the 2014 World Finals more than $40,000 in scholarships and prizes were awarded. Visit HighSchoolFishing.org for details.

As part of the State Convention, Senator Lindsey Graham will speak to attendees on Saturday at 9 a.m.  At the opening session on Friday at 8 a.m., Bettendorf Mayor Bob Gallagher and U.S. Congressman Dave Loebsack will be there.

The last time the Quad Cities hosted the Iowa VFW State Convention was in 1991 and 1992.  The location is determined by the home of the State Commander.  Christian Popp is from the Bettendorf area and is a member of the VFW Post 9128 in Bettendorf, Iowa.  In 2012, the Quad Cities Convention & Visitors Bureau (QCCVB) met with the Iowa VFW Office and learned that Christian Popp was going to be State Commander in 2015.  They urged us to begin working on a location to host the state convention and the QCCVB has worked closely with Christian Popp & Penny Hurt (Ladies Auxiliary Incoming President) to plan many aspects of this convention.

The QCCVB estimates the local economic impact is over $80,000.

The Department of Iowa VFW is an organization that supports Veterans and their families with providing a voice to the National VFW to make sure that the Veterans that fought in Wars in the past and the Veterans that will fight in Wars in the future have the benefits and support of a grateful nation.
