ANKENY, Iowa--100% of all FFA members have proficiencies as part of the agricultural program and the FFA. These proficiencies range in the areas of Agricultural Communications to Home and/or Community Development and from Diversified Agricultural Production to Swine Production. Proficiency Award winners have excelled in their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) Programs. These awards encourage members to develop specialized skills that will apply toward a future career.
State winners will advance to the National FFA competition where they will compete against winners from the other State FFA Associations. The four national finalists that are selected from each area will be recognized at the National FFA Convention and Expo in October.
The Iowa FFA Proficiency Awards program is possible with support from the many partners of the Iowa FFA Foundation. The specific partner for each area is identified in our summary of results.

AMES, IA - The Iowa FFA Agriscience Fair was held at Hilton Coliseum in Ames on Thursday, March 26, 2015. The Iowa FFA Agriscience Fair is open to 7-12 grade students. First Place winning students have the opportunity to exhibit their Agriscience research in six different categories: Animal Systems; Environment Services/Natural Resource Systems; Food Products and Processing Systems; Plant Systems; Power, Structural and Technical Systems; and Social Systems. FFA members from Iowa that are selected as a national finalist in grades 7-12 may earn the opportunity to exhibit at the National FFA Agriscience Fair in Louisville, Kentucky, in October.
While at the National FFA Convention & Expo, students put up a display showcasing their project and interview with a panel of judges. After all students have been interviewed, national summer judging scores are then combined with convention interview scores to calculate the overall ranking of projects within each category and division. Each participant is ranked gold, silver or bronze and receives a pin. The top three projects in each category and division are recognized for their efforts on the main stage during a general convention session. During this recognition ceremony, final ranking is announced.
The top three projects in each category received medals for their achievements and each division winner will receive a plaque and be recognized at the 87th Iowa FFA Leadership Conference at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. The Agriscience Fair was made possible with support from Animal Health International through the Iowa FFA Foundation.

WEST BRANCH, IOWA– On Saturday April 25th help the National Park Service plant trees around the historic site commemorating Herbert Hoover, 31st President of the United States. People of all ages are welcome to come out and help.  The tree planting is part of National Park Week and is a great chance to help make your National Park an even better place to be.

If you would like to help, contact Denise Collar at (319) 643-2541. Meet at the Visitor Center at 8:30 a.m. for an orientation and to get signed up. Work will be from 9:00 a.m. to about 1:00 p.m. Please dress for the weather, and wear comfortable work clothes.  Long pants and closed toe shoes are required.  Bring a water bottle, hat, sunscreen, long sleeved shirt, and a snack.  The park has work gloves and other required tools.

National Park Week is from April 18th to the 26th.  It the annual week to celebrate and recognize your national parks.  This year's event is also the beginning of the "Find Your Park" campaign that will run through 2016, the National Park Service's 100th anniversary.  "Find Your Park" is aimed at getting people out to experience all their national parks have to offer and to share their favorite stories about National Parks. ALLIANCE, OH (04/17/2015)(readMedia)-- Courtney Wachal, a Senior French and International Studies major of Bettendorf, Iowa, will present research at the University of Mount Union's eighth annual Student Celebration Honoring Our Latest Academic Research (SCHOLAR) Day on Tuesday, April 21 on Mount Union's campus.

Wachal will present, Why are Countries Willing to be Bound by International Law?.

SCHOLAR Day is a campus-wide event filled with presentations showcasing academic excellence and scholarly research conducted by Mount Union students.

Three formal presentation sessions and two poster sessions will be included this year, highlighting 47 formal presentations and 26 posters. Presentations will represent 19 departments and programs, including Mount Union's Master of Arts in Educational Leadership (MAEL) and Physician Assistant Studies graduate programs.

This event gives students a chance to share their latest academic research with faculty, staff, students, family, friends and the surrounding communities.

SCHOLAR Day, which began in 2008, highlights the research projects of Mount Union's undergraduate students. The 8th Annual Trebuchet Egg Throw Contest will be held on Friday, April 17, 2015 at Bettendorf High School.  25 Teams with 101 students from 5 high schools are scheduled to participate.   The competition was open to high schools teams from Iowa and Illinois as part of the QC High School Tech Challenge.

Bad Weather Plans: We plan to hold the event even if it rains unless we encounter extreme conditions (rain all day, lighting or high winds) . If we decide to cancel for the entire day, we will send out an e-mail by 8:00 AM to the teams on Friday morning which is unlikely and if so, the event will be rescheduled for the following Monday.

Founded in 1860, Augustana College is a selective four-year residential college of the liberal arts and sciences. Patrick O'Malley, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Commercial Horticulture Field Specialist, will give a presentation titled "Tomato Tech: How to Grow Better Fruit (Vegetables?)" at 7 p.m. April 23 at the Scott County Extension Office, 875 Tanglefoot Lane, Bettendorf.

O'Malley will give a brief whimsical overview on whether tomatoes are a fruit or a vegetable. He then will outline the steps to increase tomato production and flavor, from pre-planting to harvest.
