NEW BUSINESSES AND ARTISTS FEATURED AT GALLERY HOP!

(ROCK ISLAND, IL -December 1st ) - The District, MidCoast Fine Arts, The ARTery & Quad City Arts present Gallery Hop! on Friday, December 12, 2014 from 6 to 9 p.m. Gallery Hop! is a fun, festive and free open house unique to downtown Rock Island. More than 60 artists will be showcased in over 25 locations throughout downtown Rock Island during the event. The "Hop Stops" stretch all the way from 16th Street to 25th Street and from 1st Avenue to 5th Avenue! These locations are not limited to art galleries; artists will exhibit in coffee shops, restaurants, retail shops, and entertainment venues.

Jewelry, photography, woodwork, glass, paintings, drawings, book signings, sculpture, and live music will all be featured. Gallery Hop! does not lack in variety, there is something for everyone! This is a perfect event to take care of some holiday shopping, all while supporting local businesses and artists.

There are many new and exciting things happening at this Gallery Hop! There are artists who have never participated in this event before; more than 10 of the artists are exhibiting for the very first time. New businesses to the downtown area will also be participating! A particularly exciting exhibit will be at SK Models where Kimberly Miller with Celestial by Design will be painting a beautiful masterpiece on a human canvas!

There will be game cards at each "Hop Stop" that will include BINGO, and the voting ballot for the "Best of the Hop" contest. To play Gallery Hop! BINGO just visit at least five locations, have the artist sign off, and make a straight line on your card! Don't forget to vote for your favorite "Hop Stop" before you turn them in! Completed cards can be turned in at MidCoast Fine Arts/The ARTery or Quad City Arts. Winner gets a prize basket full of fun gifts, and art! The winner will be randomly drawn and notified the week of 12/15/14.

Keeping with the theme of all things new this year there will be an "AFTER the HOP" social gathering! With a few venues staying open late for Gallery Hop attendees! Immediately following Gallery Hop! Icons Martini will host a holiday popcorn bar from 9 to 10 p.m., The ARTery will host "Drink & Draw" at Blue Cat Brew Pub from 10 to 11 p.m., and The Establishment Theatre will provide a complimentary improve preview from 11 p.m. to 12 a.m.! It's a chance to get to know the artists, see them in their element, and experience performing arts at no admission cost!

Newly opened retail boutique L&D15 brings a bit of exclusive celebrity bling to the Quad Cities for the holidays with a stunning jewelry collection from New York designer Me&Ro.

Niabi Zoo Passes USDA Inspection

Coal Valley, IL - December 5, 2014- Niabi Zoo announced today that it passed its inspection by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) with a perfect report.

Niabi Zoo was inspected on December 2, 2014, by a member of the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. A USDA inspection consists of a thorough review of the wellbeing of Niabi Zoo's animal collection, its animalrelated facilities such as habitats and holding areas, its animal records, veterinary program, diet preparation areas, storage facilities, and more. Inspections by USDA occur on a regular basis as part of the licensing requirement for Niabi Zoo to be open to the public as an animal exhibitor.

Niabi Zoo Director Marc Heinzman said this successful inspection is another in the zoo's long history of positive USDA reports. "This successful inspection is one of many consecutive perfect reports for Niabi Zoo," said Heinzman, "and is just further confirmation of what I already know: that Niabi Zoo provides top-notch welfare and care for our animals." Heinzman went on to add that Niabi Zoo has received perfect inspections from USDA for many years, including the entire time (nearly seven years) that he has been at the zoo.

Niabi Zoo is currently closed to the general public for the winter, but is scheduled to reopen in March of 2015.

Pub 1848 Named Mallards' Official Pregame Destination

MOLINE, Ill. (December 4, 2014) - Pub 1848 has been named the Quad City Mallards' official pregame destination, the Mallards announced today.

Conveniently located just blocks from the iWireless Center, Pub 1848 is a favorite spot in historic downtown Moline for drinks, laughs and plenty of fun.  Before each Mallards home game Pub 1848 will offer drink specials to Mallards fans stopping by on their way to the game and will also give away tickets for each home game to lucky patrons.

The Mallards Bud Light Ice Girls will also join the festivities at Pub 1848 prior to select home games.  The Mallards and Pub 1848 have teamed for a series of pregame Bud Light promotions throughout the season that are sure to be a hit with fans.

The Mallards, who are currently on a six-game road trip, next play at home on Wednesday, December 17 at 7:05 p.m. against the Brampton Beast.  The following weekend the Mallards will hit the iWireless Center ice two more times against Brampton: Saturday, December 20 at 7:05 p.m. and Sunday, December 21 at 4:05 p.m.  Fans can stop by Pub 1848 at 1601 River Drive in Moline to join the pregame fun prior to each of those three contests and before Mallards home games through the rest of the season.

Tickets for all remaining Mallards regular season home games- including the tilts on December 17, 20 and 21- are on sale now at the iWireless Center box office, Ticketmaster outlets, ticketmaster.com and Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000.  The box office is open weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and game days from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the second period.  Tickets are available for $10, $16, $20 and $28.

Iowans push for biodiesel tax incentive on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Several Iowans, including leaders of the Iowa Biodiesel Board and Iowa Soybean Association, are in the nation's capital today drumming up support for the biodiesel tax incentive.

The National Biodiesel Board organized a Washington, D.C. Fly-in to lobby for reinstatement of the $1-per-gallon biodiesel blenders tax credit, which expired on Dec. 31, 2013. The U.S. House overwhelmingly passed a package of tax incentives retroactively for 2014 on Wednesday night that includes the credit and other deductions that would benefit farmers and Iowa's economy.

The measure now moves to the Senate. NBB officials say if the one-year package passes, any 2015 discussions will be punted to next year.

Biodiesel supporters say the fly-in couldn't have come at a better time to help ensure passage. State soybean leaders and biodiesel advocates met with their U.S. senators and representatives or key aids to explain why the biodiesel credit is needed, along with other provisions in the bill.

"We had good meetings. Everyone is supportive," said Grant Kimberley, IBB executive director. "While we were hoping for a multi-year extension, something is better than nothing. But there's still uncertainty going forward.

This is the fourth time in the last six years the credit has expired for America's Advanced Biofuel.

"Federal policy is important to compete in an established industry," he said. "Otherwise, it's hard to make investments and grow."

Kimberley, Karey Claghorn, ISA chief operating officer and T.J. Page of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association led the Iowa delegation. Others include Bill Horan, Jeff Johannesmeyer and Denny Mauser of Western Iowa Energy and Tom Brooks of Western Dubuque Biodiesel.

Even though Iowa lawmakers support renewable fuels and agriculture, Kimberley said it's important to thank them for their support and arm them with information so they can talk to colleagues about why the credit is important. Recently elected lawmakers were sent letters on the topic, he said.

"With the uncertainty of the RFS (Renewable Fuels Standard) and low commodity prices, it's absolutely critical Congress moves forward with the extenders bill to help biodiesel continue to diversify the nation's energy supply and provide economic benefits," Kimberley said. "We do know that Iowa biodiesel plants aren't running at capacity and some have reduced staff. We're not maximizing our potential."

The Iowa Biodiesel Board is a nonpartisan state trade association representing the biodiesel industry.

COMMUNITY PULLS TOGETHER TO BRING CHRISTMAS TO AT-RISK GIRLS

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois - More than 100 at-risk girls had Christmas brought to them early this year.

Ganson's Neighborhood Bakery & Café and members from the Junior League of the Quad Cities have partnered with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois to bring a holiday celebration to girls who otherwise may not have the opportunity.

The annual Christmas program was held on Saturday, December 6, 2014, from 3:30 - 9:00 p.m. at the Girl Scouts' Program Center, located at 2011 Second Ave., in Rock Island.

"Every child deserves to have Christmas," said Senior Membership Outreach Manager at Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois Missy Sweeney.

Sweeney has spent the past few weeks organizing the free event.

Girls decorated hundreds of sugar cookies, visited with Santa from 6 - 8 p.m., and unwrapped a gift donated by generous people in the community.

"It makes me teary-eyed just thinking about all the smiles on the girls' faces. It's amazing to see the community come together and bring Christmas to these girls," said Sweeney.
