Camp Courageous Train Engineer Passes

In 2007, Tom & Nan Riley of Marion, IA donated a train to Camp Courageous.  It included the engine car, a flatbed car, and caboose.  Gerry Rohr, of Monticello, Iowa was quick to volunteer his services to make this dream come true for the nearly 7,000 campers with special needs that come to Camp Courageous each year.   Gerry took full responsibility for the laying of the track, switches, and the train itself.
Gerry Rohr quickly determined the existing train engine was not large enough to pull the many campers that would travel through the woods at one time.  So he ordered a large diesel engine, pulled the old engine out, and put the new one in.  "Gerry was a genius...he could fix or repair anything," according to Charlie Becker, the camp's director and long time friend of Gerry Rohr.  The new engine was just what was needed, as two new passenger cars were designed and added in the next few years.
Along with everything affiliated with the train, Gerry oversaw the camp's three large generators that power the camp during a power outage and he assisted the maintenance staff with hundreds of projects over the years.  "Gerry was always there to help Camp Courageous, at any hour of any day," said Charlie. "Gerry was at that stage of life that he was imparting lots of knowledge to James Kurth, the camp's Maintenance Director," said Charlie, "they had a wonderful relationship."

Gerry's final gift to camp was the expansion of the train to Lake Todd, a newly constructed Lake at Camp Courageous. Gerry, along with several hard-working volunteers, spent the past spring and summer laying the track. All that remained to be done was a little balancing of the track before campers would have the opportunity for a new and longer train ride. Unfortunately, due to Gerry's death of an apparent heart attack, he was not able to take that inaugural ride.

"Gerry brought an incredible amount of joy and happiness into the lives of thousands of campers with special needs.  The train ride was a highlight of their stay at camp.  Gerry leaves a huge void at Camp Courageous, but his legacy lives on with every train ride," said Charlie.

University of Iowa student Lindsey Bushman to study abroad in Italy

IOWA CITY, IA (09/04/2014)(readMedia)-- Lindsey Bushman, a native of Bettendorf, Iowa, has been selected to study abroad this summer with the University of Iowa Consortium Institute for Management and Business Analysis (CIMBA) Italy program. Bushman, who is majoring in Marketing, will be studying abroad for 12 weeks in Paderno del Grappa, Italy at the base of the Italian Alps.

While abroad, students complete 12-18 credit hours in the areas of business, journalism, communication, and Italian. Students have the opportunity to indulge in Italian culture through excursions in local towns, participate in international company tours, network with students from around the globe, and travel Europe during over 25 days of independent travel. This fall, 12 University of Iowa students were selected to attend the CIMBA Italy program.

The University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business is the degree and credit-granting institution for CIMBA. The Consortium is made up of 35 universities across the United States that annually send over 450 students and faculty to CIMBA's campus in northern Italy. CIMBA trains future professional leaders during undergraduate, graduate, and MBA study abroad opportunities. YOUNG FOOTLITERS PRESENTS THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE SEPTEMBER 12-14

Young Footliters presents Joseph Robinette's adaptation of the C. S. Lewis novel The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe for 4 performances, September 12-14 at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts.  The production features 32 local children in 4th grade through 10th grades and is directed by Matt Falduto.  Hills Bank is the supporting sponsor.

Performances are at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts Friday, September 12 at 7pm, Saturday, September 13 at 2pm and 7pm, and Sunday, September 14 at 2pm.  Tickets are $7 - $12 and are available online at www.coralvillearts.org, by phone at 319.248.9370, and in person at the CCPA box office (1301 5th Street) and Coralville Recreation Center (1506 8th Street).

Robinette's adaptation features the characters of the novel - the four children, the talking animals, the White Witch and her followers, and the great lion Aslan - in a timeless setting that contemporary children can identify with.   Director Falduto worked to create an empowering experience for the children who are in the cast and those in the audience, helping them understand the themes of the story.  For example, he says that as a child, he "loved that Edmund could screw up, find forgiveness, and then become the hero.  To me, that's a very powerful message for our kids to learn."  This adaptation also presents a strong, brave Susan and a Peter who finds strength in emotion and empathy, portrayed by real life siblings Emma and David Bluder.

Young Footliters is a program of the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts offering children and teens fun, creative, and educational theater arts opportunities in a safe, positive, and professional environment.  Young Footliters aims to produce quality productions and classes that promote responsibility, confidence, leadership, cooperation, and arts appreciation.

She Brings It!! - What It Takes to Thrive in Male-Dominated Professions

Lessons from Florida's 1st Female Lieutenant Governor

Ninety-four years after women's suffrage in the United States, intelligent and well-educated females still battle stereotypes, discrimination and, sometimes, their own fears, when working in male-dominated professions.

And there are still many of those! From the famously boys-club cultures of Silicon Valley to construction and the automotive industry, guys remain the standard in many industries - that also tend to pay better than female-dominated fields.

"Sure, women face challenges, some of them pretty unpleasant, when they're the minority in their chosen profession," says Jennifer Carroll, (www.jennifercarroll.com), the first female - and first black -- lieutenant governor of Florida under Gov. Rick Scott, and a retired U.S. Navy lieutenant commander.

Carroll, who shares her experiences in her new autobiography, "When You Get There," says what she learned in childhood and in the military helped her to not only succeed, but to be strong and confident through even the most difficult times.

"When you're struggling, you never think you'll be better off because of it, particularly if you're a good person who's trying to do well," she says. "You learn to adjust and come out of these trying times stronger and more prepared for what's truly intended for you."

Here are some of her suggestions for women working in male-dominated companies and industries.

•  Don't neglect or fail to nurture family bonds - they will sustain you through anything.
Carroll married Nolan Carroll while she was in the Navy, and raised three children and cared for her aging parents even as she rose through the ranks and then entered politics. Throughout, she made sure family was her priority.

"My husband has stayed true to the core through all the ups and downs we've experienced," she says. "He's secure in who he is, which has brought me a sense of strength and helped me ascend to whatever levels I chose."

Likewise, her children - Nolan, Nyckie and Necho - are staunch supporters no matter what happens.

Through the most difficult times, their main concern has always been, "How is mommy feeling? Is she okay?"

•  Have a deep and trusting faith in God.
"I believe God will always make a path through the storm. I believe you have to go through the storm to get to what's waiting on the other side and afterward, you'll be stronger and more capable of handling whatever comes," she says.

That faith, that God had a purpose for even the most seemingly unjust and unkind actions of others, helped Carroll when emotions including depression, anger and betrayal threatened to overwhelm.

"You have to trust that and when you do, you don't allow yourself to engage in behaviors that conflict with your values," she says. "You maintain your self-esteem, your self-respect, and the respect of those who know and love you."

•  Be a team player.
Her 20 years in the military taught Carroll, who'd been a loner as a child, the value of being a good team player. Despite her difficult two years working as the second in command to a governor who severely limited her role, Carroll persevered in working to support him, including pursuing votes and legislation using her talents and the strong relationships she had built as a legislator.

"Some people might ask, 'Why did you keep trying to help him when it was clear he didn't want your help?' It may appear futile, if you focus only how things ended," she says.

But that's not her focus.

"I can look back and be proud of what I was able to accomplish during my time in office," she says. "Just one example: As Chairwoman of Space Florida, I was instrumental in creating thousands of new private sector, space and aerospace-related jobs. I helped transition Florida into a post-space shuttle era, so we could remain the space activity capital of the world. I managed a program that enabled 15 new or growing aerospace-related programs to thrive. They'll bring us nearly 2,000 jobs over the next five years.

"I'm very happy about what those accomplishments, and others, mean for my state."

Top Honors Awarded in Angus Show at Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES, IA (09/03/2014)(readMedia)-- Mike Wells of Wishing Well Angus in Columbus Junction was awarded the Grand Champion and Iowa Champion Bull banners in the Angus Show judged August 12 at the 2014 Iowa State Fair.

The Reserve Grand Champion Bull was exhibited by Robin Younge of Ventura.

Norris Farms of Corydon exhibited the Grand Champion Female. The Reserve Grand Champion Female was shown by Johnson Corner Cattle of Fort Dodge while Megan Collison of Rockwell City was awarded the Iowa Champion Female honors.

Ribbons Awarded at Iowa State Fair Draft Horse Show

Banners Awarded in Iowa State Fair Simmental Cattle Show

DES MOINES, IA (09/03/2014)(readMedia)-- Owen Brothers Cattle Company of Bois D'Arc, Mo., was awarded the Grand Champion Purebred Bull banner in the Simmental Cattle show judged August 16 at the 2014 Iowa State Reserve Grand Champion Purebred Bull honors were awarded to Schick-Haefner Cattle Company of Clinton, Ill. The Iowa Champion Bull was exhibited by Sherrie, Bradley and Ashl Moores Simmental Farm of Rose Hill while Springer Simmentals of Cresco was awarded the Reserve Champion Iowa Bull banner.

Madison Udell of Sioux City won Grand Champion Purebred Female and Iowa Champion Female honors. The Reserve Grand Champion Purebred Female banner was awarded to Trey Jass of Garner. Lashmett Farms of Winchester, Ill., exhibited the Reserve Champion Iowa Complete results attached:

Spencer Bohren Brings Blues to the Schools September 8-1

Thanks to a major grant provided by the Riverboat Development Authority, the MVBS 2014/2015 Blues In The Schools Artists-in-Residence series will begin with New Orleans-based blues musician and educator Spencer Bohren.  He will conduct workshops at schools and free open-to-the-public performances throughout the Quad-Cities during the week of September 8-12.

Spencer is scheduled for two free public performances:

 

  • Tuesday September 9, 7:00 p.m.–River Music Experience, 2nd & Main Streets, Davenport IA
  • Wednesday September 10, 7:00 p.m.–Co-op Records, 3727 Avenue of the Cities, Moline IL

Spencer Bohren was born and raised in Wyoming, where he sang in a family choir that performed in churches, schools, and nursing homes.  He acquired his first guitar at the age of 14, and

began his personal study of the blues by listening intently to all the music he could get his hands on and integrating it into his guitar playing.  In 1968 this study became even more focused when he played in a duo called Eagle Ridin' Papa, named after a Big Bill Broonzy song and featuring the music of the Mississippi Sheiks, Bo Carter, Robert Johnson, Skip James, Snooks Eaglin, and dozens of other legendary blues musicians. Soon thereafter, Spencer moved to Denver, where he played with and learned from such blues legends as Bukka White and the Reverend Gary Davis.

Spencer moved to New Orleans in 1975, where he began performing regularly in popular clubs such as Tipitina's and the Absinthe Bar.  Often he was paired with legends Professor Longhair, Earl King, Clifton Chenier, or James Booker.  In 1983 Spencer began a seven-year tour all over the U.S. with his family in an Airstream trailer towed by his 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air.  He later toured extensively in Europe and Japan.  In 1997 Spencer returned to New Orleans, which he considers his spiritual home.  His first recording came out in 1984, and since then he's released numerous albums.

In 1997, Spencer developed Down the Dirt Road Blues, his award-winning history of American music, which he has presented to thousands of students of all ages, as well as concert audiences in America and Europe. Spencer fell upon the approach of using a single melody and letting that song transform and migrate in a possible and probable historical context to illustrate the way blues has informed American music for three centuries.  The result is based on a song first recorded by Charley Patton in the late 1920s and easily adaptable to a variety of American musical styles, from Delta blues to Memphis jug band, Appalachia to Nashville, Chicago to rock & roll, Beatlemania, and the British invasion. It follows the journey of a single song's journey from 16th Century Africa through America's culture and history up through the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan.  Down the Dirt Road Blues not only follows the song, it also is a commentary on the relationship between American history and music.  Spencer talks about slavery, the Great Migration, racial integration through music in Memphis, the impact of radio on the cross-cultural spread of music, payola and its influence on popular music, and geographical styles and rhythms.

Down the Dirt Road Blues is performed on a variety of vintage instruments to add authenticity to the various versions of the song.  Spencer Bohren's soulful vocals carry the listener to the exact time and place of each rendition.  Listeners of all ages find themselves mesmerized with the story, curious to hear where the song travels next.

Spencer Bohren's residency this September is made possible by major support from the Riverboat Development Authority.  Additional support is provided by Alcoa, The Lodge, River Music Experience, and KALA radio.

Loebsack Office Now Accepting Service Academy Nominations

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack announced today that his office is now accepting applications for nomination to the U.S. Service Academies for the 2015 freshman class. Each year, Congressman Loebsack may nominate up to ten Iowans for each Academy, with the final selection for admission made by the individual Academy.

"As a military parent with children who attended the Naval Academy, this process is very personal to me," said Loebsack. "I look forward to nominating our future leaders and encourage all interested students to apply."

Our nation's Service Academies offer educational opportunities for young people interested in military service. Students can specialize in a variety of fields at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, the Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, or the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point.
