RAMSAY, SCRIBNER HELP BANDITS POP KERNELS 5-2

Quad Cities wins on road against Western Division opponent for first time since July 11

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (August 20, 2014) - James Ramsay had two hits and two runs scored while Troy Scribner tossed four scoreless innings to close things out after a three-run sixth inning vaulted the Quad Cities River Bandits by the Cedar Rapids Kernels 5-2 at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

After Cedar Rapids (67-61, 35-22) tied the game at two in the bottom of the fifth, Quad Cities (62-65, 27-31) responded immediately off of Kernels reliever Hudson Boyd (4-3). The right-hander issued a leadoff walk to Ryan Bottger, who advanced to second on a 3U fielder's choice off the bat of Brian Holberton. Dayne Parker followed with a double down the left field line to bring in Bottger and put Quad Cities up 3-2. James Ramsay then blooped a ball into the outfield that Kernels left fielder J.D. Williams overran for an error, putting runners on second and third. Boyd walked Bobby Boyd before serving up a two-run single to Jose Fernandez, who was 2-for-5, to give the River Bandits a 5-2 advantage.

Scribner came into the game in the bottom of the sixth for Quad Cities starter Chris Lee (7-6), who earned the win by allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits in five innings. He walked two and fanned one. Scribner struck out at least one batter in every inning, including three in the seventh, and retired the last eight Kernels to come to the plate to earn his first career save. In total, the right-hander punched out eight against two walks with a hit in four innings.

Quad Cities got on the board first for the second straight night when Bottger, who was 2-for-4 with a walk, led off the second with a single to center. He moved to second base on an errant pickoff throw by Cedar Rapids starter Stephen Gonsalves, who gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits with seven punchouts and two walks in five innings for a no-decision. Gonsalves got Holberton to pop out to short and Parker to strike out, but then Ramsay singled home Bottger to make it 1-0. The Bandits right fielder then stole second and scored when Bobby Boyd looped a single to center to make things 2-0.

Ramsay finished 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. He also registered two outfield assists, becoming the first River Bandit to accomplish the feat since Brett Phillips did so against Burlington on May 21st in a 12-4 loss that was actually completed on May 25 due to a suspended game.

The River Bandits beat a Western Division opponent on the road for the first time since a 10-5 victory July 11th at Wisconsin, snapping Cedar Rapids' season-best eight-game winning streak.

Quad Cities begins a three-game set a Beloit tomorrow at 7 p.m. with Michael Feliz (8-4, 3.80 ERA) set to start against the Snappers' Hunter Adkins (1-4, 4.32).

Skokie school districts enact Lt. Governor's education reforms

"Classrooms First" agreement emphasizes efficiency and effectiveness

SKOKIE – Aug. 20, 2014. Lt. Governor Sheila Simon celebrated an education reform milestone between Niles Township High School District 219 and Skokie/Morton Grove School District 69 on Wednesday. Superintendents signed a "Classrooms First" agreement today that aims to align instruction, reduce high school remediation needs and maximize financial resources at both districts.

"This agreement puts students first by focusing on educational effectiveness and efficiency simultaneously," Simon said. "I hope this inspires the other elementary school districts that feed into District 219 to take similar steps, and that other districts throughout the state take notice."

The intergovernmental agreement creates shared faculty and instructional tools between Niles West High School and District 69, the largest of the five elementary school districts from which it draws new students each year.

The reforms are largely based on the findings of the Classrooms First Commission, which Simon chaired and which issued a report detailing recommendations for voluntary and virtual school district consolidation in 2012. The report urged school districts to share services and cut administrative costs in order to redirect savings into classrooms.

The Niles agreement creates shared faculty between the districts and personalized learning plans for students, among other changes. Two shared positions will oversee science, technology, engineering and mathematics curricula, and instruction between the two school districts. The new alignment should reduce the need for costly remediation - or re-teaching - of math and sciences in high school and college.

Starting in 2016, new kindergarteners will also be issued the same "individualized learning plans" District 219 uses to personalize the instruction of its high school students. That plan will follow students throughout their entire K-12 career, said District 219 spokesman Jim Szczepaniak.

"Our Classrooms First Consolidation agreement with District 69 will guarantee students and their families that their elementary education will properly prepare them for high school and that their high school experience will make them ready for college and ready to succeed in life," said Nanciann Gatta, superintendent of Niles Township High School District 219. "We're honored that Lt. Governor Simon is able to join us for this signing event to validate what we are doing in Niles Township to show that public education works."

Simon joined District 219 and District 69 officials at the signing ceremony, which featured a series of talks by district instructors, and a tour of the high school following the presentation and signing.

Dunlap Farm Sweeps Iowa State Fair Shorthorn Show

DES MOINES, IA (08/20/2014)(readMedia)-- Sullivan Farms took top honors in the Shorthorn Cattle show judged Saturday at the 2014 Iowa State Fair. The Dunlap farm exhibited the Grand Champion Bull, Iowa Champion Bull, Grand Champion Female and Iowa Champion Female.

The Reserve Grand Champion Bull banner was awarded to DJS Shorthorns of Knoxville, Ill. Cyclone Trace Cattle Company of Clarion was awarded the Reserve Grand Champion Female banner.

Simon to donate books to Springfield School District

SPRINGFIELD – Lt. Governor Sheila Simon will visit Springfield educators Thursday to donate hundreds of books collected as part of a back-to-school book drive her office administered.

Simon will make the donation at a meeting of literacy specialists from schools throughout Springfield School District 186. Simon's office collected the books at the 2014 Illinois State Fair in Springfield. Throughout the 10-day event, Simon asked fairgoers to bring new and gently-used books to her tent.

Simon's office will also collect donated books for DuQuoin schools at the DuQuoin State Fair, which opens Friday.

Rock Island, IL - A special Hometown Teams "pre-season" event on Saturday will offer kids a chance to learn football skills from the Quad City Wolfpack - on the spot where the National Football League played its first game.

Program  partners Rock Island Parks and Recreation Department and Quad City Wolfpack will present the youth football clinic and football skills activity from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm this Saturday in the outfield of the Douglas Park ball diamond. Players will work with children ages 5 to 14  on basic skills, football drills, and help them  through an NFL combine course. The event is for both boys and girls and is free. No registration is required. Hometown Teams opens on Saturday, September 13, along with local exhibits and programs that mark, among other local sports milestones, the role of the Rock Island Independents in the beginnings of the NFL. Douglas Park was the home of the Rock Island Independents pro football team until 1925. Exhibits are on view from Sept. 13 to Oct. 25 at the Rock Island Main Library.

Top Honors Awarded in Iowa State Fair Red Angus Show

DES MOINES, IA (08/20/2014)(readMedia)-- Graystone Cattle Company of Stockport earned the Grand Champion Bull and Iowa Champion Bull titles in the Red Angus Cattle show judged Friday at the 2014 Iowa State Fair.

Garth Griffin of New Hampton exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Bull.

Grand Champion Female honors were awarded to Kip Wallace of Emerald, Wis. Zehnder Cattle of Stanchfield, Minn., exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Female while Shuey Stock Farms, Inc., of Corning won the Iowa Champion Female title.

Suffolk Breeders Compete for Top Honors at Iowa State Fair

DES MOINES, IA (08/20/2014)(readMedia)-- Highpoint Suffolk of Janesville, Wis., exhibited the Grand Champion Ram and Reserve Champion Ewe in the Suffolk Sheep show judged Saturday at the 2014 Iowa State Fair.

Ruby Mountain Sheep Company of Spring Creek, Nev., was awarded the Grand Champion Ewe banner and placed second in the Premier Exhibitor competition. Jerry and Rex Quam of Wanamingo, Minn. received the Reserve Grand Champion Ram banner and were also awarded Premier Exhibitor honors.

WEG and I-80 Flocks of Geneva, Neb., placed third in the Premier Exhibitor competition.

In the Junior Show, Schoelerman Suffolks of Everly showed the Grand Champion Ewe.

The Premier Exhibitor Award is given to the exhibitor who accumulates the most points based upon the day's placings.

RIVER BANDITS ANNOUNCE FAN APPRECIATION WEEK

DAVENPORT, Iowa. (August 20, 2014) - With only six home games left to thank fans for a memorable season at Modern Woodmen Park, the Quad Cities River Bandits are offering incredible savings and a spectacular promotional lineup for a full Fan Appreciation Week.

Among the highlights are back-to-back days of $1 ticket specials. Monday is Illinois Fan Appreciation Day, when anyone who shows a valid Illinois driver's license at the box office can pay just $1 for a bleacher or berm ticket. Tuesday is Iowa Fan Appreciation Day, when anyone who shows a valid Iowa driver's license at the box office can pay just $1 for a bleacher or berm ticket.

"Despite the challenges wrought by cold weather and floods, the people of the Quad Cities continue to overwhelm us with their support, and we are using the entire week to show our appreciation," said River Bandits owner Dave Heller. "We hope to welcome all of our fans across the region to Modern Woodmen Park next week to celebrate another memorable season, and our $1 tickets are just one of the ways we plan to say thank you."

The River Bandits, the Class-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, host the Cedar Rapids Kernels, Class-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, for three games Sunday, Aug. 24, through Tuesday, Aug. 26, and the Clinton LumberKings, Class-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, for three games Wednesday, Aug. 27, through Friday, Aug. 29. ABOUT THE BANDITS: Having just been named Ballpark Digest's winner of Best Ballpark Improvement in America under $1 million, the River Bandits ownership recently made one of the biggest improvements to Modern Woodmen Park since the ballpark was first built back in 1931! A new Ferris wheel, standing 105 feet over the playing field, opened May 24, Space Camp opened June 20; the new Drop-N-Twist debuted in July; and the newly expanded 300-foot long zip line also reopened. In 2013, the team unveiled a new 220-foot long dual zip line, a rock climbing wall, and a number of new bounce houses. Last season, the team's major league affiliate, the Houston Astros, saw all six of its affiliates reach the playoffs - the first time in a decade any MLB team can claim such success. The River Bandits were one of three affiliates to reach the championship round and one of two to win their league championship.

Iowa set to host 2014 Midwest-U.S.-Japan Association Conference September 7-9, 2014

(DES MOINES) - "Building a Robust and Sustainable Future" is the theme of the Midwest U.S.-Japan Association Conference, set for September 7 - 9, 2014 in Des Moines, Iowa at the Des Moines Marriott hotel.

 

For over four decades, business leaders from the Midwest region of the U.S.  and Japan have met on an annual basis to discuss the growth and progress of economic relations of the American Midwest and Japan.

 

The conference typically attracts top-level speakers and representatives from member states. This year is no exception, with remarks scheduled from:
