Washington, D.C. - Congressmen Dave Loebsack (D-IA-02) and Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA-08) Thursday commended the House Ethics Committee for reinstating the disclosure requirements for privately funded travel for Members of Congress. Loebsack and Fitzpatrick had authored a resolution that would have forced the Ethics Committee to take this step had it not overturned the changes.

"I commend the Ethics Committee for coming to their senses and reinstated the disclosure requirement for privately funded travel. These moves only deepen the mistrust the American people have in Congress. It is important for the American people to have greater access to information about who is paying for these trips and I plan to continue to monitor any future rule changes," said Congressman Loebsack.

"I applaud the Ethics Committee for their swift decision to overturn the changes to the travel disclosure requirements for members of Congress. In these times of heightened partisanship, it is important to recognize that Representatives from both sides of the aisle joined to express their wishes to be held to a higher standard," said Congressman Fitzpatrick.

After legislation passes Senate hurdle, Congressman continues push to ensure all federal flags are made in USA

Washington, D.C. - On the eve of the Independence Day holiday, Rep. Bruce Braley (IA-01) today urged his colleagues to pass the All-American Flag Act, which would require the federal government to purchase 100 percent made-in-America flags .

"The idea that the federal government should only use American-made flags is commonsense?and it's an idea that has widespread and bipartisan support," Braley said. "The All-American Flag Act can and should become law, and there's no better time to make that happen than the month we're celebrating America's independence."

Last week, the All-American Flag Act unanimously passed the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Four years ago, the Braley-authored All-American Flag Act passed the House unanimously?but did not receive a Senate vote. Braley reintroduced the All-American Flag Act in 2013, and it awaits action in the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee?a committee headed by Darrell Issa (R-CA) and Elijah Cummings (D-MD).

"The American flag will forever be a symbol that reinforces our nation's commitment to freedom and democracy," Braley's letter to Issa and Cummings reads.

The letter to Issa and Cummings can be found HERE.

Thanksgiving in July to collect non-perishable food items to benefit three Bettendorf pantries

Bettendorf, IA (June 16th, 2014) - Thanksgiving in July, a community-wide food drive seeks to collect non-perishable food items for three Bettendorf area pantries - the Bettendorf Community Center, First Baptist Church and St. James Food Pantry. The drive will be held Monday, July 14 through Saturday, July 19.

"Food pantries spend up to $1,500 each month on purchasing perishable and non-perishable food items," said Jeff Herzberg, Founding Member. "Our goal is to collect enough non-perishable food items to allow the pantries to use those funds for milk, eggs and other high protein, good-for-you products on a regular basis to their visitors."

  • Items in demand include canned fruit, vegetables, meat (tuna, chicken, Spam), peanut butter, rice, pasta/pasta sauce, Macaroni & Cheese, juice boxes, boxed meals and soups.

"While the beneficiaries of this year's food drive are the citizens residing in the City of Bettendorf, we hope to expand our scope and help more pantries throughout the Quad-City area in the future," said Herzberg.

Ways the Bettendorf community can support Thanksgiving in July:

  • Businesses are encouraged to hold a non-perishable food drive.

  • Athletic clubs, dance troops and nonprofit or civic organizations can sponsor a food drive through ball games, dances, raffles or other community events

  • Individual donations can be made at Hy-Vee on Devils Glen or Fareway on Belmont, in Bettendorf.

  • Personal checks payable to "Thanksgiving in July" can be sent or delivered to, Thanksgiving in July - Bettendorf, Northwest Bank, 2550 Middle Rd. Bettendorf, IA 52722.

Food items will be collected on Saturday, July 19 from 10 am to 2 pm at Faye's Field parking lot - near the Family Museum, Bettendorf. Volunteers will load the food, weigh it and deliver items to the food pantries in the City of Bettendorf.

To learn more about Thanksgiving in July, contact Jeff Herzberg by calling 563 343 9737 or emailing jherzberg@pfgc.com.

About Thanksgiving in July

Locally in Scott County, 19.6% or approximately 8000 children under the age of 18 are faced with food insecurity -- a need that's even greater during the summer months when children are out of school. Local food pantries see a significant amount of their contributions during the November and December months. Our local pantries have demand all year long and the summer months are an especially high period of demand for their services. Thanksgiving in July is an opportunity for the citizens of Bettendorf to provide support to the food pantries in Bettendorf.

Although Red, White & Boom is cancelled due to flooding, there are plenty of other ways to get your fireworks fix around the Quad Cities this Fourth of July weekend. Browse the list of places to go for fireworks shows provided by the Quad City Times here. That said, downtown Davenport is OPEN FOR BUSINESS thanks to the incredible flood-fighting protection from the City of Davenport Public Works crews!  Plan to visit downtown this weekend!

The Mississippi Valley Blues Festival kicks off today on Second Street between Brady and Ripley Streets. Additional workshops will be held in the River Music Experience, too. Please note that the Redstone Parking Ramp will be open and accessible via temporary 2-way traffic on Brady Street. With live music, free workshops, BlueSKool, a photo exhibit, and more, a busy and fun weekend lies ahead! Come on out and show your love for blues in the QC.

The time has come for the return of G. Love & Special Sauce to Downtown Davenport! Tonight, River Music Experience hosts the hip-hop/blues crew in the Redstone Room. Sample RME and Great River Berwery's new brew, Vintage Blonde, during their Sneak Peek Tasting before tonight's show. Great River Brewery will host the Vintage Blonde Official Tapping Party on Saturday. A portion of the proceeds from this beer will help support RME music educational programming!  Make note that RME will remain open July 4th and 5th for MVBS events.

Crews have been hard at working putting up a temporary ramp leading to Modern Woodmen Park so the Quad Cities River Bandits can play ball! Bring the family out tomorrow night for Fourth of July Fireworks, an amazing view of the river,  and to cheer on the River Bandits as they face the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Head back Saturday for Fan Appreciation day and Sunday for pregame autographs, bark in the park, and a Hy-Vee tote bag giveaway.

The rising river doesn't keep fresh goods from coming downtown. The Farmer's Market will be open this weekend on 4th Street at the Scott County Office between Western and Gains. Although the Farmer's Market is moving for the weekend, remember that Quad Cities Food Hub, Front Street Brewery, the Front Street Tap Room, and the rest of the businesses downtown are all still open and accessible.   Fresh Deli by Nostalgia Farms will be closed for the holiday, but back open on July 5th.

Stay up-to-date with street closures, detours, and flood protection information by visiting the City of Davenport's website.

See you downtown!
