Congressman: 'I'm troubled by reports indicating that inappropriate deals may have been struck'

Washington, D.C. - Rep. Bruce Braley (IA-01) today echoed a request made by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) that the EPA's independent inspector general investigate if any inappropriate lobbying efforts were conducted in order to convince the EPA to roll back the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).

"If anyone lobbied behind the scenes in an inappropriate way to roll back the RFS we deserve to know," Braley said. "Biofuels have meant tens of thousands of Iowa jobs, pumped billions into the Iowa economy, and moved the whole country closer to energy independence?but it has deep-pocketed opponents and it's important to know if any of them acted inappropriately."

A recent report by Reuters detailed lobbying efforts by Delta Airlines and the Carlyle Group, a Washington-based investment firm, to oppose the current RFS standard. In the wake of that report, CREW wrote to EPA Inspector General Arthur Elkins to request a formal probe concerning whether inappropriate or illegal lobbying efforts had been conducted.

"I am troubled by reports indicating that inappropriate deals may have been struck to craft this proposal," Braley's letter reads.

Braley has led the Congressional effort opposing the proposed EPA changes since they were first reported on in October. Late last year he joined VoteVets.org to deliver over 110,000 signatures to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) protesting proposed changes. In November, Braley wrote a letter to President Obama expressing his anger and frustration with the proposed EPA changes. In December, he joined Governor Branstad to testify at an EPA hearing stressing the benefits of the current levels and the positive impact the RFS has on Iowa.

Congratulates Recent Finalists Alia Abiad and Pranav Sivakumar

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today congratulated Illinois' recent finalists in the Scripps National Spelling Bee for their achievements as representatives of the state. Alia Abiad, an eighth grader at McClure Junior High School in Western Springs, recently returned from the prestigious event in Washington, D.C. where she placed fifth. Also recognized was Pranav Sivakumar, who placed second in last year's Bee. The Governor congratulated Abiad and Sivakumar today at an event in Chicago.

"Alia and Pranav traveled to the National Spelling Bee as representatives of our state and we can truly say that they've made Illinois proud," Governor Quinn said. "These young students showed how important hard work and a good education are for achieving success. I applaud them both and all of the other talented students from across our nation for their efforts in our nation's spelling bee."

Through preliminaries and semifinals Abiad correctly spelled fête, sultana, concinnate, misère, quebrada, collyrium, buñuel and brindisi. She advanced to the final twelve from an original 281 from across the nation and several foreign countries.

Abiad enjoys traveling, practicing the violin and also plays in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras. She previously competed in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee, tying for 19th place. According to her spelling roster, she cites Pope Francis as an inspiration.

Also honored at today's event was last year's second place finisher, Pranav Sivakumar. Sivakumar, of Grayslake, Illinois, made a remarkable run in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee which was his third consecutive appearance in the Bee. Among the words he spelled successfully were: transrhenane, masoola, semainier, faconne and avellaneous. Sivakumar cited his role model to be Astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar.

Governor Quinn is committed to properly funding education in Illinois in order to give every child the opportunity for success. The Governor's 5-year budget blueprint includes a historic $6 billion increase in classroom spending over the next five years, doubling the investment in college scholarships for students in need and increasing access to higher education through dual enrollment and early college programs. Over the next five years, the Governor's plan would bring classroom funding to the highest levels in Illinois history.

Quad Cities offense struggles for second consecutive game

BURLINGTON, Iowa (June 5, 2014) - The Quad Cities River Bandits' offense mustered just five hits in a 2-1 defeat to the Burlington Bees Thursday at Community Field.

The Bees took the lead when Kody Eaves led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run off of Quad Cities starter Michael Feliz.

Throughout the rest of his four-inning outing, Feliz battled control issues but was successfully able to strand eight Burlington baserunners, with the Bees leaving the bases loaded in both the second and fourth innings. Feliz scattered three hits and four walks with six strikeouts in his four frames.

The River Bandits were able to tie the game in the sixth. Tanner Mathis led off with an infield single. With Mathis running from first, Chan-Jong Moon punched a single to left., bringing Mathis around to third. Burlington outfielder Mike Fish bobbled the ball, which allowed Moon to reach second. After Brett Phillips struck out, Brian Holberton's groundout to second scored Mathis from third and tied the game at one.

With the score still knotted in the bottom of the eighth, Angel Rosa reached second on an error by Quad Cities third baseman Austin Elkins. Rosa moved to third on Exicardo Cayones' sacrifice bunt and then scored the game's decisive run on a wild pitch by Quad Cities reliever Tyler Brunnemann. Brunnemann (0-2) worked two innings out of the bullpen, giving up the lone unearned run with a walk and strikeout to suffer the loss.

Burlington's Trevor Foss (2-4) worked two shutout frames with two strikeouts and a hit allowed to pick up the win and Alan Busenitz tossed a perfect ninth for his eighth save.

The loss dropped the Bandits to 30-29, with Burlington's 30-28 record bettering Quad Cities in the standings with 10 games to go in the first half of the season. The River Bandits will try to salvage the three-game set tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. CT.

UP NEXT: The River Bandits return to Modern Woodmen Park at 6 p.m. Saturday with a Craig Biggio Bobblehead Giveaway presented by Prairie Farms and FOX18 for the first 1,500 fans.
