EDGEFIELD, S.C. ? Mallory Spring of East Fultonham, Ohio, was recognized at her high school awards ceremony as the recipient of the National Wild Turkey Federation's (NWTF) 2014 National Scholarship sponsored by Mossy Oak, surprising both her and a crowd of her peers. The $10,000 scholarship will help Spring pursue a degree in wildlife biology and natural resource management.

Just a few days before learning of her award, Spring enjoyed a successful NWTF youth turkey hunt in Ohio with Eddie Salter and James Earl Kennamer, Ph.D., NWTF chief conservation officer. Not a bad week for anyone, especially a 17-year-old high school senior.

"I knew I had received other NWTF scholarships but this one [the national scholarship] came completely out of the blue," said Spring. "I have always been interested in the outdoors and I hope to pass on my knowledge to others as I pursue my degree and continue with the NWTF."

Spring is set to graduate near the top of her class despite a rigorous academic course load and a schedule jam packed with extracurricular activities. Her impressive resume of both school and extra-curricular activities includes:
· Composite Score of 33 on ACT (99% Rank in Ohio and the US)
· 2013 Ohio Delegate to Citizenship Washington Focus
· Muskingum Soil & Water Conservation District Job Shadow
· Ohio Youth Capitol Challenge Ambassador
· 2011 Ohio NWTF Xtreme JAKE of the Year - JAKES member since 2005
· Ohio State 4-H Ambassador
· Ohio Delegate to the National 4-H Congress
· 4-H Shooting Sports Camp Counselor
· 4-H County Medal Awards for leadership, achievement, forestry, community service, citizenship and rifles
· National Archery in the Schools Program - 2013 Ohio State Champion and Overall Tournament Champion

Spring was the recipient of the $1,000 NWTF Ohio scholarship, making her eligible for the national honor. She also received a $250 scholarship from her local chapter, the Y-Bridge Longbeards. To date, the NWTF has contributed more than $4.6 million in scholarships to students making up the next generation of hunters and conservationists.

"I've had the pleasure of meeting and working with Mallory on the Y-Bridge Longbeards Chapter Committee. She is great girl who is fun-loving, vibrant and full of laughter," said Shawn Dickey, NWTF district field supervisor. "It was my pleasure to announce the award and see her peers give her a standing ovation."

For information about the NWTF scholarship program or to download an application, visit http://www.nwtf.org/jakes/scholarship.html.

The NWTF Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt. initiative is a charge that mobilizes science, fundraising and devoted volunteers to give the NWTF more energy and purpose than ever. Through this national initiative, NWTF has committed to raising $1.2 billion to conserve and enhance more than 4 million acres of essential upland wildlife habitat, create at least 1.5 million hunters and open access to 500,000 acres for hunting, shooting and outdoor enjoyment. Without hunters, there will be no wildlife or habitat. The NWTF is determined to Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt.

(DES MOINES) - Gov. Terry E. Branstad today appointed Janet Phipps Burkhead as the Director of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services (DAS) and Gerd Clabaugh the Director of the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH). Phipps had been serving as interim director of DAS since April 8, 2014. Clabaugh had been serving as interim director of IDPH since January 9, 2014.

"I am pleased today to name two individuals with high integrity, invaluable experience and a passion for service as directors of two important departments," said Branstad. "I'm confident that Janet and Gerd will continue their work to ensure the departments they lead operate in an efficient and effective manner to provide exceptional service for the Iowa taxpayers."

The DAS mission is to provide high-quality, affordable infrastructure products and services to Iowa state government customers in a manner that empowers them to provide better service to the citizens of Iowa and support the State of Iowa in achieving economic growth. The formation of DAS is the first and largest endeavor of this kind in the country. DAS has established an alternative to privatization that provides an incentive to employees to drive down the cost of service delivery.

Congressman: Vice President should hear from Iowans and reconsider EPA's misguided proposal

Washington, D.C. - Rep. Bruce Braley (IA-01) today requested that Vice President Joe Biden meet with members of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association to hear firsthand about the positive impact the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is having on Iowa.

"It's my goal to get every top administration official, including Vice President Biden, to sit down with Iowans so that they can hear firsthand how biofuels are growing Iowa's economy, contributing to America's energy independence, and combating climate disruption," Braley said. "The EPA's misguided proposal will have a negative impact not only on Iowa but on our nation."

A recent report by Reuters explained how the vice president played an influential role on the RFS. Members of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association have requested a meeting with the Vice President in order to weigh in on the EPA's proposed change to the RFS.

"I ask that you meet with these Iowans to hear about their experiences and the impact the RFS is having on the innovation and job creation taking place in Iowa and across the U.S., and that you work with us to revise the misguided policy currently proposed by the EPA," Braley wrote.

Braley has consistently fought the proposed EPA changes since they were first reported on in October. Late last year he joined VoteVets.org to deliver over 110,000 signatures to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) protesting proposed changes. In November, Braley wrote a letter to President Obama expressing his anger and frustration with the proposed EPA changes. In December, he joined Governor Branstad to testify at an EPA hearing stressing the benefits of the current levels and the positive impact the RFS has on Iowa.

The letter to Vice President Biden is available below:

###

May 19, 2014

Honorable Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

Vice President

United States of America

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.

Washington, DC 20500

Dear Mr. Vice President:

I am writing to follow up on a letter sent to you by Iowans who, like me, are gravely concerned with the Administration's position on biofuel policy.  As written, the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) proposal regarding the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) provides an unfair advantage to big oil and threatens the future of America's growing biofuel industry.

Given the White House's history of support for the RFS, energy independence, and combating climate change, I urge you to accept a meeting with members of the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association. The EPA's current RFS proposal is a misguided step that would ignore the intent of the Energy Independence and Security Act and the domestic jobs and innovation resulting from renewable fuel investments. These Iowans have serious concerns with the current proposal and can provide important data and convey personal experiences reiterating the impact of the RFS on local jobs and the future of renewable energy production.

I have appreciated your support for renewable fuels in the past and am hopeful that the White House will review this policy and work with the EPA to fix the current proposal for renewable fuel blending.  Investing in renewable fuels has created 63,000 jobs in Iowa - but that is just a sliver of the 400,000 jobs across America that biofuels support.

To fully invest in our clean energy future we must commit to the goals set forth in this policy and ensure that big oil companies work with us to move toward cleaner and more affordable fuel. The RFS has helped lower the cost of gas by one dollar per gallon, has saved the U.S. $50 billion in imported fuel costs, and holds the promise of replacing one-third of our gasoline by 2050.

Oil companies have worked hard to confuse the public about what is truly happening with the RFS and its impact on everything from engines to food prices. However, we have seen the Department of Energy confirm that homegrown, high-octane fuels are better for both engines and air quality.

I ask that you meet with these Iowans to hear about their experiences and the impact the RFS is having on the innovation and job creation taking place in Iowa and across the U.S., and that you work with us to revise the misguided policy currently proposed by the EPA.

Please feel free to reach out to me and my staff to help facilitate this meeting.  We can be reached at 202-225-2911.

Sincerely,

Bruce Braley

He has done the role on the first National Tour, and was chosen after an extensive national search.  Jeff Award winning Chicago actor John Leen makes his TLP debut as Inspector Javert. Lexie Plath and Erica Stephan return to TLP as Fantine and Eponine, respectively. Newcomers Caroline Murrah and Nathan Goodrich play the young lovers, Cosette and Marius.

Subscriptions are $110.  Beaudry said of the ticket prices, "The generosity of individual donors, corporate sponsors, private foundations, the Illinois Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, keep Timber Lake Playhouse an essential cultural and economic driver for the Northwest Illinois region. Without their support, every ticket to TLP would cost $35. We thank them for their continued belief in our work."

Davenport, Iowa (May 19, 2014) - This Saturday two new fiber art exhibitions will open at the Figge Art Museum. Innovators & Legends: Generations in Textiles and Fiber, organized by the Muskegon Museum of Art with guest curator Geary Jones and a companion exhibition, Local Threads.

Amid the social and artistic upheavals of the 1960s and 70s, artists began using traditional "craft" media to make sculptural and conceptual works that expanded our definition of the visual arts. Since then, new generations of artists have pushed textiles, fiber arts and other forms in even more directions, further blurring the distinction between traditional "craft" and "fine art."

Innovators & Legends: Generations in Textiles and Fiber features more than 70 works of art by over 50 artists from across the country and abroad whose work with fabric, thread and yarn has revolutionized the genre of fiber art. Weaving, knitting, soft sculpture, embroidery, felting and other techniques will be displayed that explore the myriad possibilities inherent in fiber art.

The exhibition casts aside all preconceptions of what is, or is not, fiber art?including Mary Bero's embroidered images, Kay Sekimachi's classical woven wall hangings and Nick Cave's celebrated "Soundsuits," which are wearable sculptures inspired by African dance costumes and created from castoff materials.

The companion exhibition, Local Threads, will feature artists in the Quad Cities region who use fiber and textiles to create vibrant, imaginative artworks. Many-such as Rowen Schussheim-Anderson of Davenport, Mary Merkel-Hess and Astrid Hilger Bennett, both of Iowa City-are nationally and internationally known, and all the artists create compelling pieces that continue the theme of innovation and imagination of the larger exhibition. Other contributing artists include Dawn Wohlford-Metallo of Bettendorf, Amber O'Harrow of Wellman, Tricia Coulson of LeClaire and Carol Coohey of Coralville.

Both exhibitions will be on view through September 7, 2014 and are sponsored by the Iowa Arts Council and Wynne Schafer Interiors.

The Belin-Blank Center of The University of Iowa College of Education annually releases the Iowa AP Index to recognize Iowa high schools for providing Advanced Placement opportunities. The 2014 Iowa AP Index is based on May 2013 AP exams and May/June 2013 graduation data. The formula is the number of AP exams given divided by the number of students in the graduating class. A high AP Index is a reflection that a school has a culture that is supportive of and places emphasis on student participation in AP courses and exams.

It's important to note that Magnet schools, Specially Accredited College Preparatory schools (Rivermont Collegiate), non-accredited schools, and home schools are not included in the AP Index Top 50 ranking. This change took effect in 2008. These schools, however, can receive special recognition for their score, as Rivermont has. Furthermore, because all schools are scored using the same formula, the Iowa AP Index provides a fair comparison across all school sizes and types, whether schools are included in the AP Index Top 50 ranking or not.

The following lists 2014 Iowa AP Index scores for Rivermont and local schools placing in the Top 50 ranking.

Rivermont Collegiate - 2.50

Bettendorf High School - 1.40

West High School - 0.81

Central High School - 0.67

North High School - 0.57

Pleasant Valley High School - no score, opted out, or not in top 50
