Illinois College graduates 221 students during outdoor commencement ceremony

JACKSONVILLE, IL (05/23/2014)(readMedia)-- Under partly sunny skies, Illinois College conferred degrees on 221 graduates Sunday afternoon, May 11, 2014 on the college's historic upper quadrangle. The Class of 2014 includes 13 graduate students and 208 undergraduates. Illinois College conferred Master of Arts in Education, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees upon its 180th graduating class. An honorary Bachelor of Arts degree was bestowed upon Illinois College Board of Trustee Joan Mitchell DeBoer.

Among the graduates were local students Elizabeth Manary of Moline and Hannah Oak of Taylor Ridge.

House File 398 an Act relating to the duties and responsibilities of insurance producers under insurance policies or contracts.  

   

House File 2109 an Act relating to vapor products and alternative nicotine products, and providing penalties.  

 

House File 2273: an Act relating to certain state and local government activities related to vehicle registration, taxation of rental vehicles, and levee and drainage districts.

House File 2289: an Act relating to the regulation and use of unmanned aerial vehicles.

House File 2454: an Act relating to the beginning farmer tax credit program, including the agricultural assets transfer tax credit and the custom farming contract tax credit, by extending the carry forward period, and including effective date and retroactive applicability provisions.

Agriculture Secretary Vilsack and U.S. Senator Stabenow to Host Media Call on Substantial Investments in Conservation Nationwide

WASHINGTON, May 23, 2014 - On Tuesday, May 27, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow will host a media call to announce substantial investments in conservation projects across the country. The program was authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill and will be up and running beginning Tuesday. The program will mark a new era in conservation in America, going beyond traditional government projects and providing businesses, non-profits, universities, and federal, state and local governments' opportunities to partner with agricultural and conservation groups to invest in innovative conservation projects.

The 2014 Farm Bill is our country's biggest investment in land and water conservation and has been called the most significant conservation legislation in generations. Voluntary partnerships between agricultural and conservation groups help farmers conserve soil health, protect water quality, and restore wildlife habitat.

Brucemore's Sixth Annual Tahitian Party

For one night Brucemore's infamous Tahitian Room will spill out into the pool area for the estate's sixth annual Tahitian Party on June 27 from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. Throw on a hula skit or Hawaiian shirt and dance to the beat of the steel drum band to support the restoration of the 1929 Skinner player pipe organ.  With Polynesian noshes, exotic beverages, and roast suckling pig, this popular event cannot be missed.

Irene Douglas contracted Ernest M. Skinner to construct a residential organ   for $14,000 in 1929.  Brucemore's organ, known as Opus 754, is one of only six residential organs created by the Skinner Organ Company that remains unaltered and in situ. In the 1920s, a player organ was the ultimate home entertainment system.  The player function allowed multiple orchestral voices, operas, symphonies, and popular songs to be played at the push of a button.  Experts agree that this "national treasure" needs attention.  A 2013 survey examined the condition of the organ and revealed that a full restoration was necessary.  Based on these results, a three-phase restoration project for the organ began with plans for completion in 2018.  This rare and remarkable instrument is vital to the estate's rich history and its full restoration will make it integral to the visitor experience.
