Brett Phillips collects three hits, and Quad Cities scores four unearned runs in 5-3 road win

LANSING, Mich. (April 10, 2014) - The Quad Cities River Bandits broke 1-1 tie with three seventh-inning runs following Lansing Lugnuts center fielder D.J. Davis dropping a two-out fly ball, and the visitors' four unearned runs in the game led to a 5-3 comeback win that salvaged the series finale at Cooley Law School Stadium Thursday night.

Lansing (3-4) took a first-inning lead against left-hander Evan Grills. Second baseman Dickie Joe Thon hit a leadoff single, advanced on two groundouts and scored on a single by designated hitter Mitch Nay.

Trailing 1-0, Quad Cities (3-4) took advantage of the first Lugnuts error in the top of the second inning. River Bandits left fielder Jon Kemmer popped up down the left-field line, and with three fielders converging, left fielder Derrick Loveless was charged an error for failing to make the catch, and Kemmer reached third base. Austin "Catfish" Elkins grounded out to second base to bring in the tying run.

Grills kept the 1-1 tie through his five-inning start. He worked around a two-out single in the second inning, a two-out double in the third, and a leadoff single in the fifth. He struck out five batters in the longest outing by a Quad Cities starter this season. Opposite Grills, right-hander Jeremy Gabryszwski scattered three hits and two walks while striking out three batters in his five innings.

The bullpens inherited a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning. Lugnuts right-hander Brady Dragmire (1-2) stranded runners at second and third base to end the sixth inning. He almost stranded two more in the seventh, after walking River Bandits catcher Jobduan Morales and center fielder Brett Phillips to put runners at first and third with two outs. Third baseman Tyler White hit a fly ball toward right-center field, and Davis jogged into the gap, where he dropped the catch, allowing Morales and Phillips to score, and White to reach second base. First baseman Conrad Gregor lined a single to center field that scored White for a 4-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, River Bandits right-hander Michael Feliz (1-0), who started his outing in the sixth inning, walked shortstop Jason Leblebijian. Catcher Santiago Nessy lined an RBI triple past diving right fielder James Ramsay, and third baseman Justin Atkinson hit an RBI infield single off Feliz's leg to cut the lead to 4-3. Feliz recovered to retire the next three hitters and finish his two-inning stint, allowing two earned runs on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

After River Bandits right-hander Patrick Christensen tossed a perfect eighth inning, Ramsay led off the ninth inning against right-hander Roberto Espinosa with a double to left-center field, and right fielder Brett Phillips placed a bunt single along the third-base line. Phillips had a team-high three hits. With runners at first and third, White grounded into a double play that scored Ramsay for a 5-3 lead.

Right-hander Andrew Walter came in for the bottom of the ninth inning and worked around a one-out walk for his first save of the season.

Quad Cities will open a three-game series against the Great Lakes Loons in Midland, Mich., at 5:05 p.m. Central Friday night. River Bandits right-hander Adrian Houser (0-0) is scheduled to face Loons right-hander James Campbell (0-0).

A new Ferris wheel, standing 110 feet over the playing field, is opening in May, along with a carousel, a new ride called a "Drop and Twist," an expanded 300-foot long zip line, and many other new games and attractions. In 2013, the team unveiled a new 220-foot long dual zip line, a rock climbing wall, and a number of new bounce houses. The team's major league affiliate, the Houston Astros, just saw all six of its affiliates reach the playoffs - the first time in a decade any MLB team can claim such success. The River Bandits were one of three affiliates to reach the championship round and one of two to win their league championship.

IA/IL QUAD-CITIES - Are people at the core of your business? Do even your best people sometimes make mistakes?

At the next Idea Lab program, Increasing Human Performance, presenter Michael Brooks, Founder and President of Michael Brooks Consulting LLC, will discuss how reducing the number of mistakes that take place in your business or organization could make a major difference.

The Idea Lab, a division of Results Marketing, offers live learning experiences in the Quad-Cities. "Most people do not realize that human error is both predictable and manageable," said Todd Ashby, Managing Partner of Results Marketing. "At Michael's presentation, he will share his thoughts on how to achieve a tenfold reduction of mistakes."
Increasing Human Performance will be held as a Lunch & Learn program from 12 to 1 p.m., April 18, at DHCU Community Credit Union, 1900 52nd Ave., Moline, IL. Admission is $15 and the event will include a catered Chick-fil-A meal. Attendees can select from a Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich meal, a veggie-wrap meal, or for one dollar more, a Grilled Chicken Market Salad.
"Increasing Human Performance may seem like it should be about common sense," Brooks said, "but actually, it can be counterintuitive. There are traps that increase our error rate, and by recognizing these traps, special tools can be utilized to reduce errors. Anyone wishing to improve the productivity of their workplace will not want to miss this presentation."
For more information or to register, please call Les Flesher at 563-322-2065 or email Les@resultsimc.com. Feel free to follow the Idea Lab on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Idealabqc.

National Library Week, April 13 to 19, 2014. This year's theme, "Lives Change @ your library," marks the positive impact of libraries on communities across the nation.

"Libraries are great equalizers of knowledge. Lives Change at Your Library is such a fitting theme because our new Rock Island Public Library brand, "Begin Here," recognizes that our libraries are a great place to begin something new," said Angela Campbell, Rock Island Public Library director.

Libraries also provide enrichment, education and entertainment, with free access to books, digital media and online resources, and free public programs. The following types of free events are available next week at Rock Island Public Libraries:

·         Free learning opportunities for adults, such as "Getting to Know Your iPad/Tablet" on April 14; How to Download eBooks, and "Celebrate Shakespeare with the Prenzie Players on April 15; Download THIS - Magazines, music and movies on April 16, and Putting Some Herbs in Your Life, on April 17.

·         Educational and entertainment events for children and teens, including an evening storytime for all ages, and a Teen Iron Chef program for ages 12 to 18 on April 14; Morning storytimes for ages birth to five on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; a "Lego Block" club on April 16, a Friday family movie fest on April 18; an Earth Day storytime, and Spectacular Saturday frog party, both on April 19.

·         Registration for the free Children's Summer Art program, which features five weeks of art classes for children approaching 3rd to 8th grades, also starts Monday. To sign up for the Paws to Read summer art program, call the library's Children's Department at 309-732-7360. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, with limited class openings.

Nationally, the American Library Association will also use the week to release the 2014 "State of America's Libraries Report," which highlights trends in the library world. Recently,  the Pew Research Center Internet and American Life Project reported 91 percent of the respondents said that libraries are important to the community, and 76 percent said that libraries are important to them and their families. The report showed that libraries are especially appreciated because people view them as leaders in technology. Seventy-seven percent want libraries to coordinate more closely with local schools, and 77 percent want free early literacy programs for children, and both of these factors are key elements in the Rock Island Library's five-year strategic plan.

To show their support for libraries during National Library Week, area residents can also sign the "Declaration of the Right to Libraries," to be displayed at the three Rock Island Libraries April 14 to 19.The Declaration is an opportunity to make a public statement about the value of libraries to individuals and their communities. The Declaration for the Right to Libraries is the cornerstone document of ALA President Barbara Stripling's presidential initiative, Libraries Change Lives, intended to  build  sustained support for America's right to libraries of all types.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is an annual observance by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.

For more information about Rock Island Library services and programs for children, teens and adults, visit the library's online branch at www.rockislandlibrary.org, call 309-732-READ (7323) or follow the library on Facebook or Twitter.

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after House Republicans, led by Rep. Paul Ryan, passed their misguided budget for Fiscal Year 2015.

"As someone who was raised in poverty, I know all too well about sitting around the kitchen table and having to make tough decisions. And it is even more difficult when you are setting the budget for the entire nation. But when you are sitting at your kitchen table the last items you cut are medical and prescription costs, education expenses, and the grocery bill. Unfortunately the Ryan Budget makes those cuts first by ending the Medicare guarantee as we know it, slashing Pell Grants, increasing out of pocket costs for seniors who purchase prescription drugs by reopening the donut hole, and eliminating small business tax breaks. Pulling the rug out from under seniors, students, working families, women and small business owners, while giving tax breaks to millionaires, is not the way to address the unsustainable deficit that our nation faces.

"I hear from folks every weekend when I am back in Iowa about how dysfunctional Congress is and the need to quit all the political posturing so we can actually focus on growing the economy and creating jobs. I could not agree more. At a time when so many people are still struggling, now is not the time to go after those who can least afford it. Americans deserve a budget that works for everyone, not just the wealthy and connected."
