(DES MOINES) - Gov. Terry E. Branstad today named Dr. Brad Buck, 44, to be the next Iowa Department of Education director, calling him a visionary leader with the right skills to implement the landmark education reform package passed by the 2013 Legislature.

Buck has served as superintendent of the 1,300-student Saydel school district in rural Polk County since July 2011. He previously worked as a school administrator in the Waukee, Hudson and North Mahaska school districts from 1997 to 2011. Buck began his education career in 1992 as a science teacher at Parkview Middle School in Ankeny.  He is also a past president of School Administrators of Iowa.

"Dr. Buck's passion for giving all students a world-class education and his knowledge of how to better utilize teacher leadership to accomplish that goal played a critical role in his selection," said Branstad. "He understands the importance of collaboration as educators and parents work together to assure students are prepared to compete in the global economy."

Better utilizing teacher leadership is the centerpiece of Iowa's 2013 education reform package. Each of Iowa's 346 school districts has the option to adopt a teacher leadership system that will use the expertise of top teachers to improve instruction and raise student achievement.  Districts can apply for planning grants in September, and the teacher leadership systems will be phased in over the next several years. When fully in place in 2016-17, the price tag is expected to be $150 million annually.

Buck has a head start on understanding how to put a teacher leadership system in place. Working closely with the Saydel Education Association during the 2012-13 school year, Buck helped secure a federal Teacher Incentive Fund grant that will allow the Saydel school district to implement its own teacher leadership system starting this month.

"Brad Buck's strong record of service in Iowa school districts and willingness to think outside the box make him a great choice to lead the Iowa Department of Education at this point in time," said Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds.

Buck said, "The Governor and Lt. Governor, the Legislature, and the Iowa Department of Education have cast a bold vision for school improvement efforts in our state. As importantly, they have recognized the importance of providing the necessary tools and supports needed to implement this work. I am excited and humbled to be chosen by the Governor to serve the students, families, and educators of Iowa in delivering on the promises contained in this legislation and making our education system the best performing in the nation."

Buck's official start date has not been finalized, but will be no later than September 1.  He and his wife, Traci, live in Urbandale and have 6 children.

Nature Photographer Shares 3 Tips for Getting
Out of the Grind and Into Well-Being

By a large margin, Americans hate their jobs, according to a recent Gallup poll, which found 70 percent of the work force is either completely disengaged from or thoroughly despises their work.

"Since the 2008 economic crisis, millions of Americans have been hit hard in most aspects of their lives - their homes, their jobs, their personal lives. I was one of them," says Noelle M. Meade-Izzi, whose busy lifestyle in the corporate world, combined with the market crash and other negative forces, had been crushing her sense of well-being.

"Somehow, that was all changed by the tiniest bird known to man - a hummingbird I eventually named Artemis. She was building a little nest right next to my balcony. Witnessing her small yet heroic efforts to complete the nest for her chick and then raise it to maturity, all on her own, helped nurse me through a healthy and spiritual transformation."

Meade-Izzi, author of "The Hummingbird That Answered My Heart's Calling," (http://noelle-meade.squarespace.com) offers tips for those who are open to experiencing life's everyday miracles?seeing the extraordinary within the ordinary--in the midst of the stressors and strife that seem to inundate our lives. "Get in touch with your inner hummingbird," she says ...

· Find your Artemis: Meade-Izzi was at a low point in her life when she saw the little hummingbird - a species so tiny, many people never notice it. At one point, she heard the audible fluttering of wings outside her bedroom screen slider early in the morning. It was the hummingbird, who seemed to be summoning her. After following her to the nest, Meade-Izzi discovered Artemis' chick had hatched. "Did she really intend to show me what happened?" she asks. "I think so; we'd developed a palpable bond throughout the entire nesting process." Nature is everywhere and abounds with beauty and inspiration - you just have to look for it.

· Don't fear the quiet: Waking up before you're ready, making the coffee, rushing to work and getting inundated with complaints, getting stuck in traffic on the way home and, oh yeah, you have to stop at the grocery store ... Rinse and repeat on Tuesday. Sound familiar? Workdays don't have to be a grind! "Many of us have gotten so accustomed to incessant chatter in our lives - from our mobile smartphones to what's inside our own heads - that we don't know how to respond and appreciate silence," Meade-Izzi says. There are many ways to silence the chatter, which offers surprising renewal and fresh perspectives, she says. From meditation to yoga to simply enjoying the sound of rain on your roof, make time for quiet.

· Focus on empathy: It was the focus on something extraordinarily small and completely other than herself - Artemis - that helped Meade-Izzi find her deeper self. "Obsessing over what I didn't like in my life did not help me affect positive change - in fact, it made things worse," she says. Empathy helps us hurdle the very tall walls of our ego and puts us in the shoes of someone else and what their experience must be like. In turn, we gain perspective on our own unique lives and find them more manageable."

Left-hander delivers first six-inning start and victory since June 14 in Midwest League debut

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AUG. 5, 2013) - In his first outing with the Houston Astros organization, Quad Cities River Bandits left-hander Josh Hader twirled six shutout innings, limiting the Cedar Rapids Kernels to one hit and two baserunners in his Midwest League debut, and a 5-0 lead through three innings held up for a 6-2 victory at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

River Bandits shorstop Carlos Correa had his third straight three-hit game and scored twice, third baseman Rio Ruiz had a two-run, first-inning single among two hits, and new second baseman Tony Kemp added two hits to lead Quad Cities (26-16 second half, 64-47 overall) within one-half game of the first-place Kernels (27-16, 67-44).

Quad Cities gave Hader (1-0) all he would need before he took the mound. Center fielder Teoscar Hernandez hit a leadoff single, Kemp walked and Correa hit an infield single to load the bases in the first inning against right-hander Christian Powell (2-5), who retired the next two batters. But Ruiz grounded a base hit through the right side of the infield for a 2-0 lead, and catcher Jobduan Morales reached when first baseman Max Kepler missed a catch at first base, allowing a third run to score.

Hader, acquired by the Astros organization from the Baltimore Orioles as part of a July 31 trade for major league pitcher Bud Norris, posted his only two strikeouts on the first two batters of the game. An error by Ruiz on a first-inning, two-out ground ball was all that kept Hader from perfection through the first 3 2/3 innings.

The River Bandits added to the lead with Correa's RBI single to drive in Hernandez in the second inning, as well as a double steal in the third inning that ended with Morales scoring for a 5-0 lead. Powell allowed five runs - four earned - on eight hits and two walks while striking out four batters in five innings.

Hader gave up his only hit with two outs in the fourth, when right fielder Adam Brett Walker doubled to right-center field. But Hader retired the next seven batters to complete six innings for the first time since June 14 - the date of his last victory with Class-A Delmarva.

Right-hander Jamaine Cotton started the seventh inning for Quad Cities and allowed two eighth-inning singles but no runs in his first two innings. Quad Cities added a run in the ninth following singles by Correa (his 10th of the series) and left fielder Danry Vasquez, who extended a seven-game hitting streak, before a fielder's choice groundout by first baseman Bobby Borchering. Walker hit a two-run home run in the ninth against Cotton, who earned the three-inning save. The Kernels never brought the tying run to the plate the entire game.

Monday's victory also means The Captain's Table at 4801 River Drive in Moline will offer The Captain's Table Victory Discount on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Anyone who mentions the River Bandits victory can receive a free appetizer or dessert with the purchase of two lunches or dinners with beverages on Tuesday, Aug. 6. The River Bandits conclude the four-game series in Cedar Rapids at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday, when right-hander Mark Appel (0-0) will face Kernels left-hander Josue Montanez (4-4).

UP NEXT: Modern Woodmen Park is a nominee for the "Best Minor League Ballpark" in the 2013 10Best Readers' Choice Awards, and fans can vote once per day at 10Best.com until the winner is announced Aug. 14. The River Bandits return to Modern Woodmen Park Wednesday, Aug. 7. Single-game tickets are on sale at the River Bandits box office at Modern Woodmen Park, by phone at  563-324-3000 and online at www.riverbandits.com. Season ticket and mini-plan packages start at just seven games and begin at less than $50. Call a River Bandits account representative today to choose your seats and get the details of our various mini-plan packages.
