Quad Cities loses lead for third straight game to suffer first road sweep in the second half

CLINTON, Iowa (AUG. 16, 2013) - Clinton LumberKings right-hander David Holman allowed just one run in 7 2/3 innings Friday night, and after being held to one hit throught he first five innings, his teammates scored six runs on six hits in the sixth inning for a 6-1 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits at Ashford University Field.

The River Bandits (30-22 second half, 68-53 overall) were swept in a road series for the first time in the second half and lost their fourth straight game in their longest losing streak since four consecutive losses July 10-13. Quad Cities trails Cedar Rapids by 4 ½ games in the Midwest League Western Division second-half standings. The LumberKings (27-26, 60-62) outscored their opponent 21-13 in the series and won their fifth game in a row to remain tied with Peoria for third place in the division.

Quad Cities took a lead for a third consecutive night. In the second inning, left fielder Danry Vasquez and first baseman Bobby Borchering each singled and ended up at third base and first base, respectively. Third baseman Rio Ruiz then tapped a ground ball along the edge of the grass along the third-base line for an infield hit that allowed Vasquez to score the go-ahead run. But Holman (3-6) got right fielder Jordan Scott to bunt into a fielder's choice and catcher Roberto Pena to fly out, before LumberKings catcher Tyler Marlette threw out Ruiz at third base when he tried to advance on a pitch in the dirt.

After allowing four hits in the first two innings, Holman only allowed one more runner to reach scoring position and set down 12 batters in a row during one stretch. By the time River Banidts second baseman Austin Elkins broke the string with an eighth-inning single, Holman had recorded six strikeouts while walking one batter. Right-hander Oliver Garcia pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for Clinton.

Quad Cities right-hander Chris Devenski (2-3) made it a pitcher's duel by shutting out Clinton for the first five innings. He allowed one hit, four total baserunners and only one runner in scoring position through the first five innings.

In the sixth inning, however, LumberKings right fielder Gaby Guerrero hit a leadoff double to left field, and when shortstop Martin Peguero put down a bunt toward Devenski, the pitcher threw the ball down the left-field line, allowing the tying run to score and Peguero to reach second base. After a sacrifice by shortstop Brock Hebert, second baseman Tim Lopes lined a double down the third-base line for the go-ahead tally. Left fielder Dario Pizzano followed with an RBI double, and Marlette added an RBI single to end Devenski's night after 5 1/3 innings. Left-hander Mitchell Lambson came in and allowed a walk before two more singles grew the lead to 6-1. Devenski was charged with five runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Lambson worked 2 2/3 innings in relief and recorded a season-high six strikeouts.

The River Bandits open a seven-game homestand at 7 p.m. Saturday against the Burlington Bees. River Bandits left-hander Joe Bircher (3-2) is scheduled to face Bees left-hander Brandon Love (3-6, 3.99).

WARSAW, POLAND (08/16/2013)(readMedia)-- Illinois National Guard Soldiers celebrated Polish Armed Forces Day in Poland with Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski, Polish military members and international military leaders in Warsaw, Aug. 15.

"This was an especially important year to honor the Polish military because it marks 20 years since we started our State Partnership Program with Poland," said Brig. Gen. Daniel M. Krumrei of Springfield, the Illinois National Guard Adjutant General. "Over the past 20 years Illinois Soldiers have established enduring relationships with Polish Soldiers and Airmen, working together and sharing expertise to strengthen our military capabilities."

Polish Armed Forces Day was first celebrated Aug. 15, 1923. The day commemorates the victory of Polish forces in the Battle of Warsaw during the Polish-Soviet War in 1920 and celebrates Poland's past and present-day Armed Forces.

To celebrate, Illinois Soldiers joined Komorowski in a morning mass at Warsaw's Church of Our Lady Queen of the Polish Crown, the field cathedral of the Polish Army. Komorowski then lead a ceremony and parade. Following the memorial ceremony, Illinois National Guardsmen joined multi-national military and diplomatic leaders in a reception at the Presidential Palace.

"While our mandate as the Illinois National Guard is to help our neighbor, protect our state, and defend our nation, these experiences help us to understand we do none of those things in a vacuum," said Krumrei. "These international events, and particularly our abiding relationship with Poland, better enables our Soldiers and Airmen to succeed and excel in any environment. We continue to challenge and be challenged, making us all better servicemembers and citizens of our state and our world."

The day prior was the culmination of a time-honored pilgrimage, which has been celebrated by Catholics for centuries in Poland. Seven Illinois Soldiers walked 137 miles from Warsaw to Czestochowa in 10 days. They joined approximately 770 other military members who included Polish, German, Lithuanian and Latvian Soldiers.

Many of the Illinois National Guard Soldiers who participated in the pilgrimage represented the Illinois National Guard's chaplain corps.

The Polish Land Forces chaplain was also present to ensure the spiritual well-being of the Soldiers along the pilgrimage.

"This is a priceless opportunity for both sides," said Col. Marek Karczewski, Polish Land Forces chaplain. "Our partnership is a very needed cooperation, but most importantly we share experiences with each other and continue to learn from each other."

Karczewski plans to visit Illinois next month for a chaplain exchange with Illinois National Guard chaplains. They will exchange best practices and lessons learned regarding resiliency, reintegration and family programs.

The Illinois National Guard State Partnership with Poland began in 1993. Over the past 20 years thousands of Illinois National Guard members have participated in exchanges with Polish military and civilian organizations. Beginning in 2003, Illinois servicemembers have deployed with Polish Armed Forces in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. There have been numerous military exchanges highlighting C-130 maintenance program exchanges, reserve force information exchanges, pre-deployment activity, as well as many other leadership building events. The program averages more than 25 bilateral events annually with Poland.

New Legislation Bans Drivers from Hand-Held Cell Phone Use and Increases Penalties for Distracted Driving Accidents

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn today signed two new laws aimed at reducing the number of accidents caused by distracted drivers. One law prohibits the use of all hand-held mobile phones while driving on Illinois roads, and the second increases the penalties where any use of an electronic device while driving is the cause of an accident. This legislation is part of Governor Quinn's agenda to make Illinois roads safer for all drivers.

"Distracted driving is not only dangerous - it's deadly," Governor Quinn said. "Too many Illinois families have suffered because of accidents that could have been prevented. Anyone driving a car should be careful, responsive and alert behind the wheel. These new laws will save lives."

House Bill 1247, sponsored by State Representative John D'Amico (D-Chicago) and State Senator John Mulroe (D-Chicago), prohibits the operation of a motor vehicle on any road in Illinois while using a mobile phone or other electronic communication device. The bill makes exceptions for hands-free devices, including those with headsets that can initiate a call using a single button or a voice command. The new law takes effect January 1, 2014.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, drivers using hand-held devices are four times more likely to get into an accident causing injuries, and distracted driving caused 387,000 injuries and more than 3,000 fatalities across the country in 2011. Illinois joins 11 other states and the District of Columbia in banning the use of hand-held devices while driving.

"When people get behind the wheel, they have a responsibility to themselves and to others to drive safely," Senator D'Amico said. "When motorists are on the phone, they are not giving their full attention to the most important task they have. This law will help reduce traffic accidents and make Illinois roads safer."

"We want drivers to keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel," Senator Mulroe said.  "The phone call can wait."

House Bill 2585, sponsored by State Representative Natalie Manley (D-Joliet) and State Senator Martin Sandoval (D-Chicago), increases the penalties that can be imposed on drivers whose use of an electronic device while driving causes an accident. If the accident causes great bodily harm, the driver can be sentenced to up to one year in prison, and a fatal accident can result in a prison sentence of one to three years. Current law only allows these drivers to be charged with traffic violations. The new law takes effect January 1, 2014.

"After passing legislation to ban the use of cell phones in work and school zones, I felt that we needed to enhance the penalties for causing an accident while talking on a cell phone," Senator Sandoval said. "This measure will increase roadway safety throughout the state and bring additional attention to the dangers of being on a cell phone while behind the wheel."

Governor Quinn has made reducing traffic fatalities and improving traffic safety a top priority of his administration. He has been a strong advocate of road safety measures which have resulted in Illinois having under 1,000 traffic fatalities for the first time in 88 years in 2009, the first year of Governor Quinn's term, and in every year since. The Governor has signed laws to decrease traffic congestion, replace deteriorating roadways and ensure that all drivers are properly licensed.

In addition, Governor Quinn continues to support initiatives designed to reduce fatalities on Illinois roadways such as "Operation Teen Safe Driving," a program which enlists young people to teach safe driving skills to their peers in an effort to reduce teen road fatalities.

DES MOINES, IA (08/17/2013)(readMedia)

Seven Records Set at 2013 Iowa State Fair Sale of Champions

With a final swing of the gavel, the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA) raised $342,600 for the 16 exhibitors of 4-H and FFA Grand and Reserve Champions in the Sale of Champions Saturday, August 17, at the 2013 Iowa State Fair.

Seven champion records were broken during the Sale.

The Reserve Champion 4-H Market Steer sold for a record $31,500, besting the previous mark of $30,000 set in 2010. The Grand Champion FFA Market Hog sold for $41,000, breaking the previous record of $40,000 set in 2007. The Reserve Champion FFA Market Hog set a new record of $27,500, beating the previous record of $26,000 set in 2008. The Grand Champion 4-H and FFA Market Lambs set new records at $20,500 and $16,000, respectively. The previous records were $15,000 set in 2010 and $14,500 set in 2004, respectively. The Grand Champion FFA Market Meat Goat sold for a record-breaking $8,500, besting the 2012 record-breaking price by $1,000. The Grand Champion 4-H Broiler Pen was also a record-breaker at $7,500. The previous record was set in 2012 at $7,000.

Participants in the Sale of Champions were asked to find hometown supporters to set a floor price for bidding. The purchaser in the auction paid the difference between the floor price and the final sale price. Each participant in the Sale takes home a check for 80 percent of the animal's sale price. The IFAA keeps 20 percent to fund the scholarship program and cover Sale expenses. In addition to their sale earnings, the exhibitors of the Grand Champion 4-H Market Steer, Grand Champion 4-H Market Hog and Grand Champion FFA Market Lamb earn the use of a new aluminum livestock trailer for one year courtesy of Featherlite, Inc., of Cresco.

When added with the $188,600 of scholarships and performance and carcass awards presented prior to the Sale, the IFAA bestowed $531,200 on young livestock and poultry exhibitors during the day's event. Since the inception of the Sale of Champions in 1988, the IFAA has given out more than $6 million through Sale proceeds and scholarships to deserving youth participating in agricultural-related projects and interested in agricultural-related careers.

The Market Can Save You Cash

Here are some tips to making the most of the market.

Buy what's in season. For example sweet corn is now widely available from many vendors. Prices generally are affected by the availability.

Buy in bulk, many vendors will sell you a box, a bushel or by the dozen for less.

Some vendors have blemished items that are great for canning, freezing or putting in your favorite recipes often at a great discount.

Some vendors sell ripe and ready to eat for that day.  At the end of the day they often will bundle those items at a better price.

Watch the prices.  In the store you generally pay by the pound and at the market often items are priced by the pint, quart or each.  A pound of peaches is generally only one xlarge peach in the store and  might be $2.49 per pound so 5 peaches might be $12.45 in the store. Compare to a quart that has 5 peaches at the Market  at $4.00 makes them only 80 cents each a savings of $8.00!

When it comes to your health and family knowing what you eat and where it comes from is PRICELESS!

Don't want to carry all of your items to the car?  We have both shopping carts and produce wagons to help you shop and transport them to your car.  Be sure to leave them at the market for others to use.

Plenty of parking available!

Parking during the Market.

The Freight House west parking lots can be accessed by taking River Drive to Western, or Gains from either the east or west, or you may also park directly North of the Freight House in the Community Health lot.
