Joins Other Appointees to Boards of Trustees at University of Illinois and Northern Illinois University

CHICAGO - January 18, 2013. Governor Pat Quinn today announced several appointments to the boards of two of Illinois' top universities. Among today's appointees is former U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, whose work prosecuting governmental corruption has protected the public interest. The governor also re-appointed several members to both the University of Illinois and Northern Illinois University boards of trustees. Today's announcement is part of the governor's commitment to strengthen higher education in Illinois.

"Patrick Fitzgerald has served the people of Illinois well and he will be an outstanding member of our outstanding leadership team at Illinois' flagship university," Governor Quinn said. "Today's appointees are talented, accomplished individuals who believe in the power of education. Together, they will help guide our universities to continued excellence."

Fitzgerald served as United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois. For his bio, click here. Fitzgerald has received numerous honors for his more than 20 years in public service including the Justice John Paul Stevens Award from the Chicago Bar Association. He was previously named "Lawyer of the Year" by The National Law Journal. A graduate of Amherst College, he holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School and currently works as partner in the Chicago office of the Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom law firm.

Governor Quinn re-appointed Dr. Timothy N. Koritz and James Montgomery to the University of Illinois Board of Trustees. Koritz is a United States Air Force Veteran and serves as staff anesthesiologist at Rockford Memorial Hospital. Koritz was previously appointed to the board in 2009. Montgomery is a long-time Chicago attorney and has served on the board since 2007. Both are University of Illinois alumni.

The governor also announced three reappointments to the Northern Illinois University Board of Trustees: businessman Robert Boey, who has served on the board since 1996; Dr. John Butler, a Chicago-area business consultant who is a NIU alumnus and has served on the board since 2007; and Wheeler Coleman, vice president and chief technology officer at Heath Care Service Corporation and former vice-president of the NIU Alumni Association, who was previously appointed by Governor Quinn in 2011.

There have been rumors circulating through social media and chain e-mails claiming that our troops overseas are no longer receiving hot meals for breakfast or midnight 4th meal. Some claim it's due to budget cuts, others say it's logistics, but the rumors are flying that troops are only getting lunch and dinner provided.

"An Internet rumor that American troops in Afghanistan no longer get breakfast has prompted a response from the Pentagon via Twitter.

A chain email says the last-minute deal Congress passed to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff" also denies breakfast to troops in Afghanistan.

The email garnered enough attention that rumor-debunking site Snopes.com picked up on it and rated the email "partly true" since some bases stopped serving hot breakfasts as they get ready for the drawdown."

The DoD has tried to fight the rumors by reassuring people through their twitter feed, that troops are getting 4 meals a day, but even according to the DoD's best spin, they're saying two of those meals are MRE rations.

Our troops deserve better.

If you think our troops deserve better, how about sending a care package filled with GOOD tasting food that's also portable, like powdered Gatorade or hot cocoa that can easily be mixed in minutes, or cookies and beef jerky that stay safe and delicious for weeks.

Where: Nahant Marsh, 4220 Wapello Avenue, Davenport

When:  1:30 p.m. January 23

Who:  River Action, Community Foundation of the Great River Bend, Nahant Marsh staff, and 30 visiting Augustana College students

A press conference will be held at the Nahant Marsh Education Center, 4220 Wapello Avenue, Davenport, at 1:30 P.M. on Wednesday, January 23rd to announce a $25,000 grant from CFGRB to River Action's QC Wild Places program. This event will be held in conjunction with Augustana College students touring the marsh on their annual Symposium Day.

Established in 2011 with the support of the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend, the QC Wild Places program started as a way to combine the efforts of local natural areas and their managing organizations in collaboration with River Action and area funders. Because wilderness areas are run by various organizations with staff and budgets of varying sizes, it is often difficult for them to receive the funding and publicity they need to increase awareness and make improvements. QC Wild Places is a program dedicated to preserving natural areas around the Quad Cities through service, funding, and awareness. QC Wild Places projects include funding for site improvements, community outreach and awareness, an Explorers Program for children, and conservation efforts. Member sites are located in eight counties around the Quad City region all within an hour's drive of the Quad Cities.

The program brings together 63 natural areas run by 19 organizations and 27 site managers. Select projects include funding a mountain bike trail extension at Sunderbruch Park in Davenport, the construction of a new footbridge at Black Hawk State Historic Site in Rock Island, a trail identification system at Illiniwek Forest Preserve near Hampton, and the site of the news conference, Nahant Marsh - where a sand prairie and turtle nesting site restoration with viewing platform is being built with funds from QC Wild Places provided in part by the CFGRB.

Since 1964, the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend has been dedicated to supporting local nonprofit organizations in our community.

"QC Wild Places is a great example of how the Community Foundation can partner with nonprofits beyond traditional grantmaking," said Matt Mendenhall, Vice President of Programs at the Community Foundation. "Our membership in the River Partnership of Community Foundations has helped us bring national funding and expertise to QC Wild Places, and we look forward to that type of success with other local nonprofits."

Des Moines, January 17, 2013 - The Iowa Judicial Branch, along with the Iowa Department of Human Services, Iowa Department of Public Health, and the Governor's Office on Drug Control Policy, recently received one of seventeen new federal Regional Partnership Grants to address the safety and well-being of children whose parents have substance-related disorders and are involved with the child welfare system.

Des Moines, January 17, 2013 ? The Iowa Judicial Branch, along with the Iowa Department of Human Services, Iowa Department of Public Health, and the Governor's Office on Drug Control Policy, recently received one of seventeen new federal Regional Partnership Grants to address the safety and well-being of children whose parents have substance-related disorders and are involved with the child welfare system. The five-year grant is for $500,000 a year and will serve 350 families.

The grant will fund the development of a pilot project in Wapello County that provides individualized care plans for families based on specific needs identified through trauma-informed assessments. The services will focus on the well-being of the children and families. Children and parents will take two parenting skills and family functioning classes and receive post recovery support services. The Wapello County project partners are the Iowa Department of Human Services, First Resources, and Four Oaks.

The grant will also fund both multidisciplinary and profession-specific training. The multidisciplinary training will prepare members of the child welfare and substance abuse treatment fields for collaborative efforts. The profession-specific trainings will target child welfare professionals, substance abuse treatment professionals, and judicial and legal professionals. All trainings will be statewide and continue after completion of the grant.

An evaluation will be conducted by Drs. Jody Brook and Becci Akin from the University of Kansas, School of Social Welfare in Lawrence, Kansas. The evaluation plan incorporates a multi-method approach to collect data that will be used to assess the extent to which the project is implemented as planned and objectives are achieved.

The Iowa Judicial Branch also received a two-year continuation of a Parents and Children Together: A Family Drug Court Initiative (PACT) grant originally awarded in November, 2007. The grant funds family treatment courts in six counties. The continuation is for $500,000 a year for two years. The two-year continuation grant will fund family treatment courts in Wapello, Polk, Linn, Scott, and Woodbury counties, and the combined court in Cherokee and Ida counties. Family treatment courts offer a comprehensive approach to treating parents with substance-related disorders, while maintaining the goal of reuniting the family.

PACT grant activities will focus on continued implementation of the six family treatment courts with ongoing training and information sharing between the sites and state level partners. The grant also funds case planning that involves entire families to promote family self-sufficiency, family treatment services, increased family support, and additional children's services

The original PACT grant was for parents with younger children, from birth to five years old. The continuation grant is for children from birth to 10 years old. The family treatment courts plan to serve an additional 180 families over the next two years. Iowa was one of only eight states to receive a continuation grant.

Through the original five-year grant, the six family treatment courts served 399 families comprising 481 parents or caregivers and 773 children. More than half the children were in foster care or staying with other family members for safety reasons prior to their parent or parents enrolling in treatment court. Of those children, nearly 80 percent were reunited with their families when their parent or parents completed treatment court. Estimates show that the family treatment courts have generated more than $2 million dollars in cost avoidance for the state in their first five years of operation.

Both of these grants were awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families, Children's Bureau entitled: "Targeted Grant to Increase the Well-Being of, and to Improve the Permanency Outcomes for Children Affected by Methamphetamine or Other Substance Abuse."

Litigation is America's fastest growing business because plaintiffs have everything to gain and nothing but a few hours' time to lose, says Hillel Presser, author of "Financial Self-Defense (Revised Edition)," www.assetprotectionattorneys.com.

"Even if a case seems utterly ridiculous -- like the man who struck and killed a teenager with his luxury car and then sued the boy's family for damage to his bumper -- defendants are encouraged to settle. It's sometimes the only way to avoid potentially astronomical legal fees," he says.

If you haven't already taken steps to protect your assets, that's one New Year's resolution you'll be glad you made and followed up on, Presser says. And while it helps to have the assistance of a lawyer who specializes in asset protection, there are many things you can do yourself.

"You shouldn't have any non-exempt assets in your name," Presser says. "The goal is to 'own' nothing but control everything."

Presser suggests these resolutions for safeguarding your wealth in the event of a lawsuit:

• Inventory your wealth. Figure out how much assets you really have (most people have more than they think). Take stock of valuable domain names, telephone numbers, intellectual property, potential inheritances, and other liquid and non-liquid assets. That way you can then work on actions to cost effectively keep them safe.

• Set your goal. Setting your 2013 asset protection goal is your first step to becoming protected in the New Year! For instance, you could plan to execute an estate plan or set up a trust for your children in 2013. Decide what assets you want to protect in the New Year and a realistic timeline for implementation. Then -- and most importantly -- stick to your plan. Asset protection works only if you follow through.

• Protect your home. Find out how much of your home is protected by your state's homestead laws and then encumber the remaining equity. Encumbering a home's equity can be accomplished by recording a mortgage against it, re-financing a current mortgage or even taking out a lien of credit using your home as collateral! Another great strategy to protect your home is to transfer its title to a protective entity such as a limited liability company (LLC), trust, limited partnership, etc.

• Get everything out of your name. The worst thing you can do as far as exposure is titling all of your assets to your personal name. That doesn't mean you have to lose control of them - the goal of asset protection is to "own nothing, but control everything." In 2013, work on moving your assets out of your personal name and into the name of protective entities such as limited liability companies (LLC's), trusts, limited partnerships, etc.

• Buy adequate insurance. Protect your loved ones. Make sure you have adequate insurance coverage in the event a job loss, natural disaster, or even a tragic loss of life. Those include -- but are not limited to -- your car, home, and other valuables.
