Billy's credits are many, including playing lead guitar for several years with both Little Milton and Larry "Arkansas" Davis as well as stretches with Albert King, Earl King, Elvin Bishop, Chuck Berry, Art Neville and many others. I know, I know, you've never heard of Billy Thompson, and neither had I. I got his newest CD, A Better Man, via Blues Blast Magazine, as Billy's latest work was nominated for best Contemporary Blues CD this year. Well, let me tell ya, he's a good one. His songs are laced with poetic lyrics, his vocals both varied and soulful, and his guitar work first-rate. Customers visit The Book Rack's two Quad-Cities locations (Davenport and Moline) from as far away as Clinton, Fulton, Aledo, Dubuque, Muscatine, Geneseo and beyond.
IA/IL QUAD-CITIES - After 30 years at the same location, The Book Rack in Bettendorf, Iowa, is moving to a new location on Elmore Avenue in Davenport, effective Sept. 24.
According to bookstore owner Bob Applegate, the decision to move the store's Iowa location after three decades was a matter of planning for the future.
"We had two locations - a new one in Moline and the older one in Bettendorf's Duck Creek Plaza," he said. "The larger, more visible facility in Moline quickly surpassed the Duck Creek site in sales, even though it's only been in Moline for two years. The Bettendorf store, though successful, was limited by its size and location."
The Moline store is located in Rock River Plaza at 3937 41st Ave. Dr., Moline, Illinois. The new Davenport store can be found at 4764 Elmore Ave., across the roadway from Best Buy.
Bob Applegate and his wife, Claudia, bought The Book Rack's Quad-City franchise four years ago after retiring from the Rock Island Arsenal, satisfying their entrepreneurial spirit at an age when others are thinking about leaving the 9-to-5 workday.
"Something Had to Be Done"
According to Applegate, the biggest problem with the Duck Creek Plaza location was that it was out of the public's line of vision. "It's across a parking lot from Home Depot, and really, you could only see it from Home Depot," he said. "It never benefited from its proximity to Schnuck's, even though that high-traffic supermarket was right around the corner."
Plus, the Bettendorf location was just too small. "It needed to hold a lot more inventory to compare to the Moline location," Applegate said. "Something had to be done."
After considering various sectors of the Quad-Cities for a new location, Applegate decided to move the Duck Creek Plaza store to Elmore Avenue. "The new location has much better visibility and ample storefront parking," he said.
How The Book Rack Works
According to Applegate, The Book Rack gives customers store credit on the books they bring in, for 25 percent of the cover value of paperbacks. They accept mass-market and trade paperbacks, as well as selected hardcovers. "We welcome the opportunity to look at any book," he said. They may decline a book if they have too many copies or if the book is in bad shape.
The Book Rack sells paperback books priced at half the cover price. They accept store credit up to 50 percent off the sale price of used paperbacks that the customer buys. They can special-order almost any book for a discount.
"Our customer service includes a Book Search feature," Applegate said. "If you're looking for a favorite book or author, we'll let you know when the item comes in. Our system will also tell you if you've bought a particular book before, in case you're a voracious reader and have forgotten the titles of what you've read before."
A Widespread Clientele
According to Applegate, customers visit The Book Rack's locations from as far away as Clinton, Fulton, Aledo, Dubuque, Muscatine, Geneseo and beyond.
"We have between 55,000 and 60,000 books in stock in Moline," Applegate said. "The Duck Creek location could only hold 20,000 titles. The Davenport store will start out with 35,000 titles and grow from there." He noted that his stores do not suffer from any clutter. "It's all as neatly filed as any library," he said, "and clean, with no dust." Also, The Book Rack has about 1,800 books listed on Amazon.com.
"Our tagline is, 'It just makes sense to get your books at The Book Rack.'" Applegate said. "That applies whether you're buying from us at our locations or online. We encourage folks to visit the stores regularly, since the inventory changes and you never know what great books you'll find once you start browsing."

Davenport, Iowa - Residents of the Davenport and the greater Quad Cities will join with thousands of other Iowans in a one-kilometer Healthiest State Walk at 12 noon on Wednesday, October 3. Local walkers will meet at the River's Edge, 700 West River Drive. We will walk from River Drive to Credit Island and back, with an option for those that would like to hike around the 2.3 miles island.

State organizers hope to involve even more than the 291,000-plus Iowans who participated in the Healthiest State Initiative's "Start Somewhere" walk in 2011. A kilometer is about 7.5 city blocks, a 12-minute stroll for the average walker. Walkers can sign up for the event at www.iowahealthieststate.com.

"Iowans showed their extraordinary support of the Healthiest State Initiative with last year's walk," said Theresa Hauman, local coordinator. "By itself, of course, a one-kilometer walk is not enough to change the health of the state, but we're encouraging even more residents of the Davenport and greater Quad City area to join in this year's event and maintain our momentum toward becoming the healthiest state."

In 2011, Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds announced the plan to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation within five years as measured by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index®. In 2011, Iowa ranked 16th compared to all other states, up from the 19th position in 2010.

"The intent of the Healthiest State Walk is to encourage Iowans to take their own steps that will help us improve our state's well-being rank," Branstad said when announcing the 2012 walk date. "The Healthiest State Initiative this year will continue to champion existing well-being programs with special emphasis on encouraging local walk groups, workplace well-being, consumption of fruits and vegetables, and smoking cessation. Progress in these areas will translate to a healthier Iowa and better quality of life for all its residents."

The Healthiest State Initiative is a privately led, public effort that engages Iowans and their communities throughout the state. It involves individuals, families, businesses, faith-based organizations, not-for-profits and the public sector in a broad-based community-focused effort. Davenport, IOWA (September 2012) – On Saturday, September 29, 2012, the Figge Art Museum will participate in the Smithsonian's annual Museum Day. The Museum will join other participating museums and cultural institutions nationwide to open their doors free of charge to all visitors who download the Museum Day Ticket from Smithsonian.com. Museum Day is a celebration of the dissemination of knowledge to anyone and everyone interested, without a price tag, emulating the free admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution's Washington, DC-based facilities.

CHICAGO - Lt. Governor Sheila Simon will join Illinois higher education leaders tomorrow to support a pledge committing schools to implement policies that provide support for Illinois' 30,000 student veterans.

Leaders from more than 20 Illinois community colleges and universities, including City Colleges of Chicago, National-Louis University, Northeastern Illinois University and the University of Illinois will be in attendance at the University Club in Chicago and asked to sign the Valuing Veterans Pledge. The pledge declares a school's support for enhancing student veteran outreach and recognition, providing transition services, and establishing support policies and procedures. Simon said pledging to invest in Illinois' student veterans should be a priority of every citizen.

"As a state, we must ensure that our veterans, those who put their lives on the line to serve us, have access to the tools they need to succeed in school," said Simon, who is Governor Quinn's point person on education reform. "An investment in student veterans is an investment in the future of our economy."

The Valuing Veterans event is co-hosted by the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning, the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs and Student Veterans of America. Simon will be joined by David Hiller, the president and CEO of McCormick Foundation, Col. David Sutherland, a former Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Erica Borggren, director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs.
