The Figge Art Museum is opening its new Artica Gallery on Saturday, February 25th, at 2 pm. A formal program in the auditorium will honor all project participants, followed by a ribbon cutting. Light refreshments will be served. The installation was made possible with support from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust.

Artica helps visitors discover where artists find inspiration, how artists use their imagination to be creative, and how artists express their ideas. Artica also encourages visitors to look, imagine, and create. Five images from the Figge's permanent collection, reproduced in vinyl, serve as the inspiration for the displays and hands-on activities. "Artica Guides" offer tips for parents and caregivers on what to talk about with children when viewing the five works of art.

Activities are designed for children, but many activities can be adapted to visitors of all ages. A brief description of each station is listed below:

Station 1:  Artists challenge us to see the world differently.

A linoleum print of a woman's face by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso is the inspiration for the drawing activities at this station. To learn about the relief printmaking process, watch the 7-minute video featuring St. Ambrose University Art professor Joseph Lappie demonstrating how a multi-colored linoleum print is made. The film was produced by Matt Carroll, a professor in the Communications Department at St. Ambrose University. Self-portraits drawn by students who attend elementary schools in Bettendorf, Davenport, Geneseo, Moline, and Pleasant Valley are sprinkled throughout the gallery.

Station 2: Artists express what we feel.

Why are penguins vacationing in the Caribbean? After viewing this humorous picture painted by Haitian artist Jasmin Joseph, make your own penguin finger puppet or draw a picture of your favorite animal playing a musical instrument. Colorful pictures depicting animals playing musical instruments drawn by students who attend elementary schools in Bettendorf, Davenport, Geneseo, Moline, and Pleasant Valley will serve as inspiration.

Station 3: Artists make the ordinary extraordinary.

How could an artist transform a simple chair into a throne? One Haitian painter did just that by embellishing it with painted designs and flowers. After viewing this colorful work, try making your own miniature chair using a variety of materials.

Station 4: Artists engage our imagination.

The colorful "gingerbread" houses that were constructed in Haiti around the turn of the 20th century are characterized by bright colors, tall ceilings, decorative latticework, and wrap-around porches. After viewing this imaginative painting, construct your own "gingerbread" house using the provided template. Colorful blocks and Legos are also available for aspiring young architects.

Station 5: Artists play with line, shape and color.

The Spanish artist Joan Miró created playful images using expressive lines, unique shapes, and bright colors. Experiment with color using the large wall board or the computer software programs.

The Artica Gallery also includes picture books that help teach children about the Artica concepts of inspiration, imagination, and expression.

Leanne Paetz of Pederson Paetz, Omaha, designed the Artica Gallery. The palette of cool colors including aqua, blue, and green was inspired by the colors in the painting of the penguins described above. The playful font and design elements create a lively, animated space that will appeal to children and those young at heart.

Admission to the reception is $10 per families. Admission is free to Figge members and institutional members. The Artica Gallery is open during regular museum hours and is free with admission or membership.

For information about museum programs, visit the Figge website at www.figgeart.org.

Men head to the bedroom for fun, women for sleep!

(February 22, 2011) - The bedroom is the first place both men and women would go if they had more free time in a day. The catch - men go there for sex, women for sleep!

In a survey, Great Clips, the first ever hair salon brand to introduce time saving online check-in, asked 316 Americans how they would spend 15 minutes of more time in a day. (15 minutes is important to Great Clips because Online Check-in has trimmed average haircut wait times by 15 minutes to five minutes or less, giving customers 15 more minutes of time in a day.)

1. Survey recipients were given a list of options and asked to choose what they would do with 15 minutes of extra time in a day.

THE #1 CHOICE FOR MOST WOMEN IS SLEEP (Ranked #1 by nearly 1 in 4 women, 24%)

  • Most Often Ranked in The Top 5 were Sleep, Clean (organizing closets, dust baseboards, mop floors), Read, Watch TV and Exercise.
  • Have Sex was lower on the list after Sit There and Do Nothing with No Disturbances and Cook.

THE #1 CHOICE FOR MOST MEN IS HAVE SEX (Ranked #1 by 28% of men)

  • Most Often Ranked in the Top 5 were Have Sex, Sleep, Listen to Music, Exercise, Sit There and Do Nothing with No Disturbances

2. When survey recipients were given a list and asked to rank the 3 most annoying time wasters of their spouses/significant others:

THE #1 CHOICE FOR WOMEN AS THE MOST ANNOYING TIME WASTER of THEIR SPOUSE/SIGNIFICANT OTHER is PLAY VIDEO GAMES

  • Most often Ranked as the Top Choice is Play Video Games, Work Too Much and Do Nothing (Tie) and Zone in front of the TV

THE #1 CHOICE FOR MEN AS THE MOST ANNOYING TIME WASTER of THEIR SPOUSE/SIGNIFICANT OTHER is PRIMP AND GET READY

•    Most often Ranked as the Top Choice is Primp and Get Ready, Complain/Whine/Stress, and Stare at a Closet Full of Clothes and Whine "I have nothing to wear."

3. When Both Men and Women were asked to rank the Most Annoying Time Waster in Your Own Life?

Most often ranked as the Top Choices:
#1) Being Placed on Hold
#2) Waiting In Line
#3) Traffic

4. When both men and women were asked What Do You Want More of? and asked to pick one from Time, Money, Sleep, Exercise and Sex:

Respondents Chose:
#1) Money (70%)
#2) Time (13%)
#3) Sleep (9%)
#4) Exercise (8%)
#5) Sex (0%)
NONE CHOSE SEX (0%)

"In all our research, in focus group after focus group, we heard that today's busy families are stressed out, exhausted and short on time - and today time is money," says Rhoda Olsen, CEO of Great Clips. "We had to figure out a way to cut wait times and give our customers more free time to have fun and do the things they love to do. Online check-in allows people to check in from their desks or from their smart phones so when they get to the salon they have little or no wait and have more time."

Other survey findings:

  • 87% of respondents say they would use a technology that kept them from waiting in lines at retail stores if it saved them 15 minutes waiting for an appointment.
  • When a retail business makes them wait more than 15 minutes:
  • 63% say it shows bad customer service and a lack of respect for their time
  • 52% of respondents say they don't go back and take their business elsewhere
  • 48% say they assume the business is poorly managed
  • Only 19% say they get annoyed with the people in line with them.
  • 9 out of 10 respondents (93%) said a reasonable amount of time to wait at a retail business is 5 - 10 minutes or less.
  • 2 out of 3 respondents say they would use a check-in or download app that saved their place in line at a retail business.

Hello

The volunteer staff and management of WGRV The Groove would like to personally say Thank You for supporting this radio station for the past 8 years.  We will be celebrating our 9th Birthday in April 2012.

From our many community events over the years, we have had the opportunity to meet thousands of great people and most importantly...make thousands of new friends who share the love of Smooth Jazz.

It Is Very Important --  As our "Listener Supported" Public radio station continues to grow, (and keep Jazz alive on the airwaves) that you continue to financially donate and support our events.  The Groove is proud to be your only local 24-hour source for Smooth Jazz in Central Florida.

Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa today made the following comment on the announcement from the United States Trade Representative that the trade agreement between the United States and South Korea will go into effect on March 15.  Grassley and others have long-awaited the trade agreement for its significant benefits to U.S. farmers, businesses, and services providers.  Congress approved the trade agreement's implementing legislation in October 2011 after long delays in President Obama's submission of the legislation to Congress.  Upon approval of the implementing legislation, the President was authorized "to exchange notes with Korea providing for the entry into force at such time as the President determines that Korea has taken measures necessary to comply with provisions of the agreement that are to take effect on the date of the entry into force," according to the trade representative's office.  Grassley is a senior member of the Finance Committee, with jurisdiction over international trade, and former chairman and ranking member of the committee.

Grassley comment:

"This is good news.  U.S. workers deserve the boost from this new market access.  They'll rise to the challenge with quality goods and services.  The implementation of this trade agreement was a long time in coming.  It's ironic that the same Administration that was slow to present the implementing legislation gave the agreement such a fast turn-around from legislative approval to the effective date.  I hope the speed of implementation doesn't cause problems.  Anything that's not spelled out now could be the source of trade disputes later."

Josh Mandel, US Senate Candidate from Ohio
.
It is the focus of the Tea Party Express to take conservative control of the U.S. Senate, and we are proud to announce our endorsement of Treasurer Josh Mandel in Ohio's U.S. Senate race. Josh is the perfect candidate to replace Sherrod Brown, Washington's most liberal senator according to National Journal.
.
.
Josh Mandel accepting the Tea Party Express endorsement from Chairman Amy Kremer and Chief Strategist Sal Russo at a press conference in Cincinnati, Ohio
.
Sherrod Brown is grossly out of touch with the citizens of Ohio and Americans across the nation.  Brown has consistently voted for more spending like ObamaCare and the failed $800 billion stimulus while ignoring the nation's $15 trillion debt and growing budget deficit.  We need conservative legislators in Washington who understand the dire fiscal situation of our nation and who are willing and able to fix it. As State Treasurer, Josh Mandel was recognized for successfully implementing conservative investment strategies and sharp management of the state's finances. While our nation under Obama's leadership was receiving a credit downgrade, Ohio received a credit upgrade thanks to Mandel!
.
.
US Senator Sherrod Brown, a steady supporter of President Obama, Obamacare and the failed stimulus packages
.
However, on top of getting our fiscal house in order, we must implement policies that encourage economic growth. Mandel not only campaigns as a conservative, he has the courage to legislate as one. As a city councilmember, Mandel successfully led the charge for one of the state's only property tax rollbacks ever. He has been a proponent of oil and gas exploration in Ohio that could create up to 200,000 new jobs and has shown commitment to improving the business climate by cutting taxes and letting taxpayers keep more of their hard-earned money.
.
Mandel is added to a distinguished list of Senate endorsements from the Tea Party Express for the 2012 election, including Attorney General Jon Bruning in Nebraska, Treasurer Richard Mourdock in Indiana, and former Solicitor General Ted Cruz in Texas.
Churches United of the Quad City Area will be participating in the Alan Feinstein challenge

Churches United would like to ask the community to please recognize our long history in operating food pantries and meal sites by supporting our hunger programs beginning March 1 through April 30th.

We have an opportunity to receive other funding from the Alan Feinstein Foundation if we can garner a significant contribution during these 60 days.

Should you feel so moved please designate in the memo line or send us a note you are in your envelope that you are responding to the Feinstein Foundation Challenge.

Churches United will then receive a proportional amount of the $1,000,000 (million) the foundation will be dispersing to hunger agencies all across the country.

Remember, your donation must simply require two things: that it be dated between March 1 and April 30th, 2012 and the Feinstein Foundation must be mentioned somewhere in your mailing.

It has been a tough year and we continue to feed Quad Citians all over the greater Quad City area.

In 2011, our food pantries served over 29,000 families equaling over 102,000 indiivduals. We do make an impact .

So please help us during this time. Thank you!!

For questions or more information contact Churches United at 332-5002 or email us at: awachal@cuqca.org

Braley helped secure $2 million to fund renovation project in 2009

Davenport, IA - Rep. Bruce Braley (IA-01) today attended the reopening of the Iowa National Guard's Aviation Readiness Center, lauding the renovation of the facility and saying it will enhance the ability of the Guard to save lives and protect Iowa.  In 2009, Braley helped secure $2 million to fund the renovation project.

"The renovation of the Iowa National Guard's Aviation Readiness Center helped create jobs here in the Quad Cities and has given the facility new life," Braley said.  "I'm proud of my work helping to make this needed renovation happen.  This beautiful facility is a great addition to the Davenport area and will help the Iowa National Guard do its job."

The $2.1 million project completed today is the second part of a two-phase project that renovated the entire National Guard facility, originally constructed in 1972.  The first phase of the renovation was completed in 2010.

Minneapolis - The only race series in the United States offering amateur cyclists trips to the Nature Valley Grand Prix, where they will compete against the country's top men and women professionals, has a new name and several new cities for 2012.

Formerly known as the Nature Valley Pro Ride, the new "Nature Valley Pro Chase" will select the top amateur man and woman at six races to become part of a pair of composite Nature Valley Cycling Teams for the 14th annual edition of the premier stage race on the 2012 USA Cycling National Racing Calendar.

"This name better reflects the goal of the program, which is to emotionally engage the entire cycling community by telling the stories of the participants," Nature Valley Grand Prix Executive Director David LaPorte said. "What hasn't changed is the opportunity it gives top amateurs to be noticed by pro team managers and potentially receive a pro contract."

Rider invitations will be issued following each of the six stops on the Nature Valley Pro Chase national tour: Tour de Murrieta (March 9-11) near San Diego; Jefferson Cup (April 1) near Charlottesville, Va.; Tour de Moore (April 28) near Raleigh, N.C.; Superior Morgul Classic (May 18-20) near Boulder, Colo.; Memorial Day Weekend Omnium (May 26-28) in the Quad Cities of Iowa and Illinois; San Jose Omnium (May 30-31) near San Jose, Calif.

The Tour de Murrieta, the Tour de Moore and the Superior Morgul Classic are new to the calendar while the Memorial Day Weekend Omnium and Jefferson Cup return from last year. The San Jose Omnium was a stop on the series in 2010.

Tour de Murrieta promoter Ernie Sanchez said he looks to add a new element to his race each year and the Nature Valley Pro Chase is a perfect fit.

"This is huge for us it's going to add that extra element of excitement to our race," Sanchez said. "We've had some great competitors over the years, from Chris Horner to Sarah Hammer and Chad Beyer and we always have a very strong, competitive men's category 1 field. I know they'll be looking forward to what some refer to as the "American Idol" of cycling. So we're proud to be a part of it."

Nature Valley Pro Chase qualifiers will earn free entries to the Nature Valley Grand Prix, generous travel stipends, team clothing, housing, ground transportation, and staff support for their composite teams. They will also receive pro-level recognition before, during and after the events, including pre-race call-ups and participation in promotional and media appearances. Their entire journey can be followed through blogs and on-line videos on the Nature Valley Pro Chase website (www.naturevalleyprochase), the Nature Valley Grand Prix Facebook page  (www.facebook.com/NatureValleyGrandPrix) and on Twitter (@NVBikeFest).

Snapshot glances at the six Nature Valley Pro Chase events:

Tour de Murrieta (March 9-11), San Diego: Three unique courses comprise a weekend of racing - Friday's time trial features a 1.2-mile portion of unpaved/dirt road. Saturday's criterium is run on a lightning-fast, one-mile course in historic Downtown Murrieta, while Sunday's circuit race is run on a 3.5-mile course (56 miles for men, 46 miles for women).

Jefferson Cup (April 1), Charlottesville, Va.: Nearly two dozen editions make this is the oldest continually run road race in the Mid-Atlantic region. The course for the one-day race winds through rolling countryside south of Charlottesville. The race is 70 miles for men and 50 miles for women.

Tour de Moore (April 28), Southern Pines, N.C.: The oldest road race in the South (this is the 37th edition) has previously been used as both a Pan American games qualifier and a qualifier for the Quebec Provincial Team. Men will tackle four laps of a 27-mile rolling loop of the Fort Bragg Military Reservation (112 miles) while women do two laps for a 58-mile race.

Superior Morgul Classic (May 18-20), Boulder, Colo.: The Morgul Classic has three days of racing and roots in the famed Red Zinger and Coors Classic races. Friday's time trial starts on top of "The Hump" and is a 6.5-mile course up "The Wall." Satruday is a criterium through the town of Superior, followed by Sunday's road race on the fabled Morgul Bismark course.

Memorial Day Weekend Omnium (May 26-28), Iowa and Illinois: Returning for the second straight year, the three days of racing consist of a trio of unique criteriums: Snake Alley, Melon City and the Quad Cities Criterium - which, at 47 years old, is the fourth oldest criterium in the nation and the oldest in Illinois. All three have been a fixture on the Midwest racing circuit on Memorial Day weekend for more than a quarter century.

San Jose Omnium (May 27-28), San Jose, Calif.: One of the longest running bike races in San Jose, Calif., the road race (63.5 miles for men, 63.5 miles for women) climbs 4,500 feet in 20 miles over Mt. Hamilton, the highest peak in the Bay area, on a course that was part of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California. The criterium is run over a one-mile course in Morgan Hill, Calif.
