Remodeling and reinvesting over $150,000 to bring Urban Chic to the Quad Cities

Thunder Bay Grille in Davenport is closing at 2PM on Sunday November 8th as they do an extensive remodel throughout the restaurant and re-open to the public on Friday, November 13th.  The most noticeable change will be to the bar area in which a dining room will be removed to triple the current bar's space and creating a new lounge area named "The Birch Bar".  Thunder Bay will add an urban-chic interior - a blend of contemporary style and rustic elements creating a uniquely urban ambiance while remaining comfortably casual.  New furniture, flooring, lighting, and painting will also be completed.

A new menu will be introduced- with an extensive tapas menu featuring items inspired from around the world.  Thunder Bay favorites have stayed, like the Jambalaya and Drunken Steak, but also now added are more woodfired choices and flatbreads.

"We are creating a dynamic, up beat and energetic environment complete with high definition plasma televisions, Wi-Fi in the bar area, a tapas menu, and spiked smoothies.  We are offering a new adventure in dining that is fun", states Mike Whalen, owner of Thunder Bay and Heart of America Restaurants and Inns.  The remodel has slowly been taking place over the past month with the official closing to finish off final construction and conduct extensive training with the staff.

Heart of America is accustomed to making dramatic changes in only a few days - Planted Earth was completely remodeled in only 7 days to re-open as Johnny's Italian Steakhouse in December of 2002.  "We wanted to re-invest in the Quad Cities - this is a great place to live, so we decided to spend our time and money right here and bring even a better dining experience to Davenport - with Thunder Bay favorite menu entrees and now adding over 40 tapas to choose from, you're bound to find one or two that you love", states Whalen.

Thunder Bay is located at I-80 & Brady Street in Davenport, a newly designed website can be viewed at www.thunderbaygrille.com.  To make reservations contact the restaurant at 563-386-2722.

Harkin served as chair of original caucus

Washington, DC - Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) welcomed Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) to the Populist Caucus' meeting this morning. Harkin, a co-founder of the original Populist Caucus, discussed the history of the group, and the role of Populist values in today's economy.

"Senator Harkin did an outstanding job of addressing and motivating the caucus this morning," Braley said. "His words were a great reminder that the principles we fight for today are the same middle-class values the original Populist Caucus platform was founded upon. I'm very thankful to the Senator for taking time to visit us this morning, and for continuing to promote Populist ideals in his work."

"Populists throughout history have stood up for the struggling middle class and against deeply entrenched economic interests who use their power to impede progress.  That's why, on the cusp of meaningful health care reform, it is so important to have a strong populist voice in Congress," Harkin said. "I am proud that Congressman Braley has revitalized this movement, because Americans deserve someone in Washington who will fight for working people and their right to earn a fair wage, for health care as a right and not a privilege and for quality public schools for all of our children."

Senator Harkin served as co-chair of the first Populist Caucus in 1983. It consisted of 14 Midwest Democrats fighting specifically for fairer taxes, lower interest rates and cheaper energy.

Braley founded a new Populist Caucus in 2009 with the same underlying motivations. The caucus now has 29 members, united from varying backgrounds to fight for the same agenda of strengthening the middle class.

More information on the Populist Caucus, including their Health Care Principles can be found on Braley's website: http://www.braley.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=294&Itemid

Bill signed by Obama allows Pentagon to provide benefits to Iowa National Guard troops

Washington, DC - Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Iowa) today applauded President Obama's signing of his Guaranteed Benefits for Our Troops Act (HR 1222) into law. The Act was included in the final FY2010 National Defense Authorization Act.

Braley's fix will ensure that hundreds of Iowa National Guard members are provided benefits they were promised under the Department of Defense's Post-Deployment/Mobilization Respite Absence (PDMRA) program, commonly known as "Respite Leave."  Over 20,000 Army National Guard members across the country - including almost 800 members of the Iowa National Guard - did not receive benefits they earned due to delay between the announcement of the leave program by the Department of Defense and the implementation of the program by the individual services.

"As the Iowa National Guard prepares to send over 3,000 troops to Afghanistan in the largest single unit call-up since World War II, it is critical that troops receive the benefits they have earned and deserve," Braley said.  "That's why I'm thrilled that President Obama signed this important legislation into law today.  Now that the Guaranteed Benefits for Our Troops Act has finally been enacted into law, I'll be working to ensure that the Pentagon provides these benefits to National Guard troops in Iowa and across the country immediately."

Respite Leave was designed to provide service members deployed to places like Iraq and Afghanistan for longer than established rotation cycles additional help to reintegrate back to civilian life, as well as to improve the retention of service members who had experienced especially long tours of duty.

Once the Respite Leave program was announced, however, there were significant delays before its implementation.  The Department of the Army, for example, didn't issue its corresponding policy for implementing Respite Leave until more than six months after the Pentagon's January 2007 announcement of the program.

Because of this gap, thousands of soldiers from the Army National Guard did not receive proper Respite Leave compensation.

Braley first introduced the Guaranteed Benefits for Our Troops Act in July 2008.  The bill will allow the Pentagon to retroactively grant up to $200 per day to affected troops.

Washington, D.C (October 6, 2009) -- In today's world, consumers are looking to save money and become more responsible for themselves and the environment.  Simple steps to reduce energy consumption can equate to savings in the bank as well as savings of precious natural resources.  To provide consumers the tools needed to make decisions with economic and environmental benefits,

ZiptoGreen has created a consumer friendly website that aggregates a multitude of information on energy efficiency and the environment.

As a comprehensive, user-friendly website addressing energy efficiency, www.ziptogreen.com, is currently a featured website of the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy of the U.S Department of Energy. Consumers will quickly find that ZiptoGreen is a one-stop online resource that makes it easy to reduce residential energy consumption and connects to an array of energy efficiency, renewable energy and environmental resources.

During the national launch in Washington D.C., ZiptoGreen founder Julia Glenn Carter and Emerald Planet President Dr Samuel Hancock called on individuals, businesses and governments across the country to commit to reducing energy consumption.

"The nation is at a crossroads of a looming energy and environmental crisis. If every person takes simple steps now to become more energy efficient, we, as a collective whole, will slow the rate at which our natural resources are depleted in order to feed the growing energy market," said Carter.  "Many of the actions set forth on the ZiptoGreen website can be easily implemented by most homeowners and do not involve a change in lifestyle or large investment.  With ZiptoGreen, saving money and our resources go hand-in-hand."

ZiptoGreen helps consumers realize their intentions to become more energy efficient by making it easy to create and implement a customized action plan.  A robust content management system gives all stakeholders; businesses, government, utilities, green groups and consumers; the opportunity to connect either nationally or locally via ZIP codes. The website engages the public by presenting information in an unbiased format and offers links to additional resources for users who want to delve into areas of interest.

The ZiptoGreen website's five key areas; an Energy Reduction Plan, ZipSource, Zip-Ed, How To and Why; allow consumers to navigate the website quickly to find specific information or spend time exploring its content.

The interactive Energy Reduction Plan feature enables users to create a personalized reduction plan according to their zip code, climate zone and pertinent housing and energy information. This personalized plan tracks a user's progress and easily links to savings on products and services.  Users can even schedule to have email reminders sent directly to their inbox.

Other resources on the site connect users to tips, tutorials, educational materials, original articles jobs and more.
