FAYETTE, IOWA (May 27, 2020) — For the past 15 years, a dedicated group of Upper Iowa University (UIU) alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends participated in the Des Moines Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI). During the annual July event, the Team Peacock members promote UIU and raise money for University projects and funds.

DES MOINES, IOWA (May 27, 2020) — Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate has announced 18 schools have qualified for the Carrie Chapman Catt Award for the 2019-20 school year, including Rivermont Collegiate in Bettendorf. The award is given to schools that register at least 90 percent of their eligible students to vote.

LENEXA, KANSAS (May 27, 2020) — The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has reached a settlement with BNSF Railway Company to resolve alleged violations of the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) at a facility owned by the company in Sioux City, Iowa. In the settlement, BNSF agreed to clean up an estimated 2 million pounds of broken cathode ray tube glass, a hazardous waste, placed and stored there by a previous occupant.

DES MOINES, IOWA (May 26, 2020) — Governor Kim Reynolds signed a new proclamation continuing the Public Health Disaster Emergency until June 25, 2020.

As previously announced, the proclamation permits bars, wineries, breweries, distilleries, and social and fraternal clubs may reopen on May 28 with the same public health measures as restaurants in place.

DES MOINES, IOWA (May 25, 2020) — The state of Iowa has been notified of 263 additional positive cases for a total of 17,213  positive cases. There have been additional 2,841 negative tests for a total of 110,358 negative tests to date, which includes testing reported by the State Hygienic Lab and other labs. The positivity rate for this report is 8.4%.

As the COVID-19 pandemic ran its deadly course in New York, governor Andrew Cuomo affirmed a state policy forbidding nursing homes to reject suffering from the disease. At least partially as a result (Cuomo himself acknowledged early on that the virus spreads through such facilities "like fire through dry grass"), nearly 6,000 long-term care residents have died so far.
