Shameful bill reduces transparency & opens door to illegal foreign political contributions

Yesterday, Congressman Blum cast his vote for a bill that would undermine protections that prevent foreign money from flooding our already-broken campaign finance system. Instead of doing his job and fighting back against the influence of secret money in U.S. elections, Blum once again sided with special interests by voting to maintain their ability to rig the system against American families.

The Republicans’ bill, H.R. 5053, opens the door for foreign donors to illegally funnel secret money into U.S. elections, by reducing IRS disclosure requirements for tax-exempt 501(c) groups. Campaign finance experts and good government groups have repeatedly spoken out against this assault on our democracy.

“Instead of ending the influence of secret money in our political system, Congressman Blum voted to create a new loophole that would make it easier for foreign money to influence our country’s political system,” said Tyler Law of the DCCC.
