Katie Kilburg releases first book, ‘Speedy McFastpants’

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – When her son was diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder at five, author Katie Kilburg wanted to help other kids understand what was happening to them, so she wrote and is now releasing her first book, “Speedy McFastpants: A Day in the Life of a Boy with ADHD” (published by Archway Publishing).

Kilburg’s illustrated children’s book follows the adventures of Speedy McFastpants as he deals with the struggle of getting through daily routines at school and home.

“It is my hope that this book will help those dealing with the disorder to understand they are not alone and that children who do not have ADHD will better understand their peers that do struggle on a daily basis with the symptoms of ADHD,” Kilburg says. “These kids are able to do all the same things other kids do, they are good kids, and some grow up and do great things with their lives.”

Kilburg adds her hope that educators will be able to use the book in diversity lessons or lessons on respect and acceptance. “ADHD is a big issue in today’s classrooms and I don’t think people always understand the disorder well. They might just assume a child is naughty or wild and can stop it if they would just listen. I hope this book shows them that ADHD is not something a child can willingly control all the time.”
