DAVENPORT, IA – March 2016 –Gilda’s Club, in partnership with Living Proof Exhibit and sponsored by UnityPoint Health — Trinity, is hosting Quad City Arts Visual Arts Director Dawn Wohlford-Metallo In a FREE workshop called Creative Sessions: Coping through Collage on Tuesday, March 15th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Gilda’s Club (1234 East River Drive, Davenport, IA).

Participants will create at least one collage using provided scrap paper, tissue paper, magazines, rubber stamps, ribbons, buttons, etc. Bring your own memorabilia including get well cards, typed words of empowerment or encouragement.

The American Journal of Public Health (Feb. 2010) found a positive link between art and healing, stating that “[a]rt can be a refuge from the intense emotions associated with illness. There are no limits to the imagination in finding creative ways of expressing grief.”

While this Creative Session will be held during the Grief Connections support group at Gilda’s Club, anyone impacted by cancer is welcome. No artistic experience is required.Creative Sessions is collaboration of Gilda’s Club, Living Proof Exhibit and UnityPoint Health — Trinity that offers art therapy to cancer patients and survivors at no charge. Creative Sessions are held monthly from February through November.

Unique to this year, each month will feature a different artist instructing a session on his or her passion. Wohlford-Metallo is the Visual Arts Director for Quad City Arts in Rock Island, IL, where she has worked since 2001. She is a member of the Acquisitions Committee for the Figge Art Museum, Davenport, IA. Additionally, Wohlford-Metallo is a working visual artist with a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture, from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Although her own artwork usually falls into the “mixed media” category, making paper is her specialty. When not at her day job, she teaches workshops, attends art openings, and produces her own artwork. Her work can be seen at www.uptildawnpaperworks.com.
