Grassley’s embrace of the presidential ticket shows he has lost touch with the Iowa way of life

DES MOINES, Iowa - Today marks the beginning of the Republican National Convention, where Chuck Grassley will proudly stand with one of the most extreme and divisive presidential tickets in history as he continues to hold the Supreme Court vacancy hostage for Donald Trump’s nominee.

“Chuck Grassley’s enthusiastic endorsement of Donald Trump and Mike Pence to lead this country is the latest sign that Washington has changed Chuck Grassley,” said Patty Judge. “Chuck Grassley rubber stamping the dangerous and divisive agenda of Donald Trump and Mike Pence would be a disaster for Iowa families. Their out-of-the-mainstream policies would force Iowa families to work even harder, while giving more unnecessary handouts and power to billionaires and big corporations. They would also take us backward on equality and women’s health and continue the cynical, political games that have gripped Washington. This is a ticket Iowans absolutely cannot afford.”

Robert Leonard of KNIA/KRLS reports that Grassley described the “perfect outcome” of the Republican National Convention as “A conservative platform that Trump will honor and praise, a one ballot roll call where Trump will be nominated, a one ballot roll call where his vice president, whoever that is, is nominated, and then a perfect performance by our nominee.”

Here’s a brief look at what that “perfect outcome” would mean for Iowa families:

  • Wealthy and big corporations over working families and our nation’s future. Both Pence and Trump support cutting taxes for the wealthiest Americans and large corporations. Under Trump’s plan the top one-tenth of one percent would receive more tax relief than the bottom 60 percent of taxpayers combined. His plan would also explode the deficit, adding at least $10 trillion in the next decade alone. Chuck Grassley endorsed Trump and has made it clear that he will campaign with him.

  • Putting millions of American women at risk. During his time as a congressman and as governor of Indiana, Pence has been a leading advocate of decreased health care options for women. Not only was Pence the first member of Congress to propose defunding Planned Parenthood, the Washington Post reports, “In 2011 and 2013, Pence played a central role in trying to shut down the government over funding Planned Parenthood.” As governor, Pence signed into law one of the nation’s most extreme abortion laws, which was so outrageous, the Supreme Court found it unconstitutional. Chuck Grassley stands with the Trump-Pence agenda to decrease access to healthcare for American women.

  • Rolling back civil rights. In 2015, Pence signed one of the nation’s most extreme anti-equality measures into law. The bill would have allowed businesses to refuse service to LGBTQ individuals, legalizing outright discrimination in the state. In 2006, Pence also claimed that equal rights for same-sex couples signaled “societal collapse.” Chuck Grassley stands with Donald Trump and Mike Pence and their support for rolling back civil rights.

Iowans are watching the Republican National Convention and Chuck Grassley’s full embrace of the Republican ticket and platform is undeniable.
