Grassley refuses to condemn Trump’s comments on accepting outcome of the election

DES MOINES, Iowa – Meeting with the Des Moines Register Editorial Board this afternoon, Chuck Grassley made it clear he was still standing by Donald Trump, despite Trump’s latest statement that he will “keep you in suspense” about accepting the results of the November election.

When asked about being left in “suspense” by Trump, Grassley laughed off the comment by asking, “Isn’t that the way he is on a lot of things?” During his visit with the editorial board, Grassley also struggled to defend the Senate Judiciary Committee’s productivity – which has been historically unproductive under his chairmanship.

The Des Moines Register Editorial Board has previously documented Trump’s disgusting statements and Chuck Grassley’s support. In a June editorial, the board wrote, “And when it comes to Donald Trump, there are invertebrates that have shown more spine than Sen. Charles Grassley.”

In their endorsement of Hillary Clinton last week, the board wrote, “Trump mocks the disabled, denigrates prisoners of war, objectifies women, brags about his anatomy on national television and, if his own boastful comments are to be believed, indulges in criminal, predatory behavior. Then he looks at America and asserts, as he did in Nevada just two weeks ago, ‘I am a reflection of you.’” Despite all of this, Donald Trump is still Chuck Grassley’s presidential pick.

“There’s no end to Chuck Grassley’s loyalty to Donald Trump. It’s baffling that he continues to trust him to fill the Supreme Court vacancy, when he admits Trump is keeping voters in suspense ‘on a lot of things,’” said Patty Judge Spokesperson Sam Roecker. “Donald Trump is unpredictable and unfit to be president, yet Chuck Grassley is still standing by his side. Trump is treating this campaign like Chuck Grassley treats legislation in Congress: playing political games with no consideration of the consequences for Iowans or Americans. If Chuck Grassley hadn’t turned his back on Iowa, he would recognize that Donald Trump is one of the most dangerous presidential candidates in history and withdraw his endorsement.”
