DES MOINES, Iowa – While some may be surprised that Chuck Grassley remains supportive of Donald Trump despite the Republican nominee’s racist rhetoric, ignorance of basic policy issues, and history of bragging about sexual assault, close observers of Grassley’s record will recognize his consistency in putting party before country.

Chuck Grassley has advocated for Republicans to avoid criticizing each other, no matter the circumstances, despite when doing so would assert Iowa values like honoring veterans and diversity. In a July 2015 interview with KMCD, Waverly Newspapers, and Cedar Falls Times, In response to a question on how Donald Trump’s comments about immigration and veterans sit with him, Chuck Grassley responded:

“Well I can only tell you what Chuck Grassley would say. I would abide by the Reagan notion, ah resolution, or fifth commandment, eleventh commandment I guess it is that you speak no ill of another Republican. Now that doesn't apply to just Trump, it applies to all these Republican candidates for presidents and those of us that are senators as well. And I think that if you live by that, that's the best thing we can do.” [Capitol Hill Report, 7/23/2015]

“It’s clear that Chuck Grassley doesn’t have the best interest of our country, but especially veterans, when he says Republicans should refrain from ever, ever talking ill of each other,” said Patty Judge Spokesperson Sam Roecker. “This strong Republican-party loyalty explains why Grassley hasn’t ever asked Donald Trump to even just apologize for insulting women, African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, Catholics, pastors, Americans with disabilities, LGBTQ individuals, undocumented immigrants, veterans, POWs, and families of fallen soldiers, or for bragging about sexual assault. His steadfast support of Donald Trump reveals that being a Republican is more important to Chuck Grassley than being an Iowan or American.”
