Davenport, IA – On May 10th, 2016 Family Resources was awarded a new contract to serve Survivors of Homicide and Other Violent Crimes (SOHP) and on July 1 began providing services. SOHP Advocates for this program interact with the criminal justice system, as well as many community resources and entities when assisting survivors. “It’s important that our community understands that Survivors of Homicide is not just for individuals or families of homicide survivors, but is also for other violent crimes such as assault and battery, burglary, hate crimes, and drunk driving,” said Emily Gordon the SOHP supervisor who brings to this position more than 15 years of experience working with grief, loss, trauma and crime survivors.
There is specialized grief, loss, and trauma therapy available through the Family Resources’ which currently employs licensed therapists in an outpatient mental health setting. Other community resources which will aid in the identified goals of the survivors will also be accessed in order to provide a holistic approach to services for the SOHP clients.
“Family Resources is proud to have this opportunity to expand our services offered to victims of crime, friends and family members of crime victims and really anyone impacted by a crime,” said Mary Macumber Schmidt, President of Family Resources.
Services are provided in Clinton, Jackson, Cedar, Scott, Muscatine and Louisa counties. An array of advocacy services, ranging from crisis response to supporting survivors during court and medical processes to education and advocacy around how trauma impacts work and life, are available through the program.
